At 2:26AM on July 12, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 9800 block of N Vesper Av in Panorama City. Firefighters arrived to find a two story apartment building with fire showing from at least one unit. 90 firefighters extinguished the fire in 37 minutes with the fire primarily contained to the unit of origin but with some extension to two additional units. No injuries were reported.

Major Emergency Blaze Consumes Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:48PM on November 25, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1820 E 48th Place in the Central-Alameda area. The address, site of a Greater Alarm fire two nights prior, included four large, adjoining buildings which housed multiple businesses. Heavy fire was showing from one building, already through the roof upon LAFD arrival.

Truck companies deployed ladder pipes and engine companies flowed wagon batteries while establishing large diameter hand lines. Forcible entry was required to open all the rolling steel doors and give firefighters access to the blaze from the exterior.

An entrenched battle continued through the night with 115 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Kristina Kepner, working aggressively to defend the adjoining structures. Their efforts prevented the fire from extending and protected numerous businesses.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section had an open investigation into the cause of the fire at this address on November 23, 2021 and were on scene to conduct the cause investigation into this fire as well, which remains ongoing.

At 11:14AM on July 25, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 570 block of N Normandie Av in East Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived to a vacant to story fourplex with heavy fire showing.

Crews initiated an offensive operation, simultaneously conducted vertical ventilation and interior fire attack.

The incident rose to the Greater Alarm level with over 70 firefighters achieving knockdown in two hours and three minutes.

Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with heat related illness and returned to duty later that day.

Winnetka Fire Injures One by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:32PM on March 16, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 6900 block of N Corbin Av in Winnetka. Firefighters found a one story, single family dwelling with fire showing. Crews engaged in an aggressive interior fire attack and rooftop ventilation. One occupant was found with burns and transported to a local hospital. It took 35 firefighters just 16 minutes to extinguish the flames. Red Cross was notified to assist with approximately five displaced residents.

Multiple Businesses Saved in Woodland Hills by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:26PM on June 14, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 20934 W Victory Blvd in Woodland Hills. Firefighters arrived to find a large (16,544 sq ft), one story row of commercials with fire showing from the end unit. The truck company went to the roof as fire attack intiated their entry through the front. An additional company went around to the back of the structure to evaluate possible access points. While roof division began cutting ventilation holes, fire attack reported difficulty in locating the seat of the fire. Firefighters continued pushing into the unit but the intense heat prevented their advance before reaching the (still not located) fire. With fire in the building's common attic, it became an untenable position for interior fire attack. Incident Commander, Assistant Chief Corey Rose, made the call to transition to a defensive operation. The companies at the back of the structure were able to open up a rolling steel door and using large diameter handlines, hit the fire from the outside.

Once the bulk of the flames abated, the incident reverted to an offensive operation and firefighters moved inside to pull ceiling and ensure no extension through the attic. Official 'knockdown' was achieved by 106 firefighters at the 49 minute mark. Their diligent efforts stopped this fire from moving across businesses and leaving a trail of destruction. The business adjacent to the fire unit suffered water/smoke damage and the two additional units only sustained smoke damage.

Paramedics evaluated one civilian patient who declined LAFD transport. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. LAFD Arson responded and this remains an active investigation with cause and dollar loss to be determined.

Firefighters arrived to find a two story, garden style apartment building with heavy fire showing from one unit on the 2nd floor. 78 firefighters extinguished the fire in 32 minutes with no injuries reported.

Firefighters Protect Feed Store From Flaming Hay Bales by Los Angeles Fire Department

CHATSWORTH - LAFD was summoned to the 10300 block of North Mason Avenue for a reported structure fire at 1:18 PM on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. They arrived to find a large stack of hay behind the feed store burning outside, with the structure threatened, but thus far uninvolved. Firefighters quickly pulled hose lines to both protect the building and extinguish the burning hay. Firefighters contained the flames in approximately 30 minutes, but stayed into the night, as potential hot spots remained deep within. No animals needed to be relocated. No reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters arrived to find a mobile home fully involved in fire. Both occupants safely exited the structure but sadly, a pet cat and dog are believed to have perished. The cause was determined accidental, likely related to a candle.

At 3:36 AM, units were dispatched to a structure fire in the Old Town Tavern in Goleta. Moments later Sheriff's Deputies reported heavy smoke and flames through the roof of the structure. A rapid aggressive attack by the Santa Barbara County Fire Department prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. The cause of the fire was determined to be an overloaded electrical power strip.

At 12:20PM on December 22, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 20200 block of W Cantara St in Winnetka. The first arriving 50 firefighters took just 36 minutes in a well coordinated offensive fire attack to access, confine and fully extinguish flames within a single three-story residential unit of two occupied floors above a ground level garage. Firefighters quickly and safely evacuated a mobility impaired female resident from a unit adjacent to the fire. No civilian or responder injuries have been reported.

LAFD Battles Flames in Tujunga Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

TUJUNGA - LAFD was summoned to 6461 West Valmont Street in Tujunga at 2:51 AM on Sunday, October 18, 2020, for a residential structure fire. Twenty-six firefighters engaged in battle, starting with a defensive attack from the exterior and transitioning to an offensive attack inside the structure, ultimately eliminating the flames in 33 minutes. There were no reported injuries.

North Hollywood Fire Destroys Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:07PM, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to reports of an outside fire extending into a structure in the 5400 block of N Tujunga Av in North Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find a commercial building with heavy fire showing which triggered a defensive operation. The multi-pronged fight required additional resources and quickly grew to a Major Emergency status incident.

Truck companies raised aerial ladders to deploy ladder pipes while engine companies used wagon batteries and put large diameter hand lines into place. Firefighters ascended a residential high rise across the street to gain the high ground with additional handle lines. High voltage power lines combined with wires down created an additional safety hazard to be factored into the angle of attack of all water streams.

While the fire raged, crews worked aggressively to defend another exposed building, still in the framing stage of construction. Their efforts were successful and the structure remained undamaged.

The fight continued for one hour and 56 minutes before the 111 firefighters, under the leadership of Assistant Chief Corey Rose, achieved a knockdown. There were no injuries reported.

A residential high rise across from the fire was impacted by smoke blanketing the area but there were no medical complaints and firefighters ensured the area was ventilated with all alarms were cleared.

Based on protocol for a fire of this size, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded for the cause investigation and it remains active.

South L.A. Building Destroyed, But Critical Equipment Saved by Los Angeles Fire Department

HISTORIC SOUTH-CENTRAL - An overnight battle raged as nearly 100 firefighters worked diligently to defend a burning commercial building. Ultimately the fire won out, but their efforts saved business-critical equipment worth over $165,000.

At 12:50AM on February 25, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 3801 S Grand Avenue in South Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from a one story commercial building, exposing the attached two story structure.

The first engine company on scene initiated a transitional fire attack, applying water to the visible flames from the exterior while awaiting the arrival of more fire companies. They also saw two printing presses inside the building and identified them as key to the textile business. They focused their efforts and despite the growing blaze, were able to save this equipment worth over $165,000.

The 11,388 square foot building, constructed in 1969, comprised a one story warehouse in the back with a two story office section at the front. Once the bulk of the initial assignment arrived on scene, firefighters began an offensive operation on both areas. Approximately 30 minutes into the incident, continued heavy fire in the one story section resulted in signs of the structural integrity being compromised which triggered the move to a defensive operation with additional resources requested to assist.

While large diameter hand lines and master streams were deployed and directed into the one story building, an offensive operation was carefully coordinated in the two story building as firefighters worked aggressively to save the office portion of the structure.

Despite the diligent effort of 99 firefighters under the command of Assistant Chief Kristina Kepner, who labored relentlessly for over two hours, the fire consumed a majority of the building, resulting in a total loss and the structure being red-tagged as unfit for occupancy by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.

Monetary loss from the blaze, which thankfully caused no injury, is still being tabulated. Pursuant to protocol, the cause of this greater alarm fire remains under active investigation by the LAFD Arson / Counter-Terrorism Section.

Granada Hills Fire Kills One, Destroys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

GRANADA HILLS - Just after 5 a.m. on September 28, 2019, firefighters found a one-story home engulfed in flames on the 10400 block of Densmore Ave. Excessive storage conditions inside and out impeded efforts to quickly access the burning structure. It took 72 firefighters 50 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters combed through the excessive storage conditions inside the destroyed structure after the flames were extinguished and discovered one deceased occupant (73-year-old female). Mayor's Crisis Response Team and Red Cross responded for on scene support.
