Strip Mall Fire Stopped by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:47PM, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 13600 block of W Vanowen St. Over 95 firefighters stopped this fire from destroying multiple units and achieved full extinguishment in just over an hour.

Sun Valley Fire Destroys Vacant Supermarket by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:11AM on July 22, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 8025 N Vineland Ave in Sun Valley. Two Los Angeles Police Department officers on patrol saw a rising smoke plume and located the fire to find it raging. They radioed in the location and went to check the doors to see if anyone was inside. The 82,000 square foot structure, built in 1958, was vacant and boarded up so they safely retreated to await the fire department.

When the first fire companies arrived, they found heavy fire at the back of the building had extended forward. The incident commander quickly implemented a defensive operation with crews on all four sides of the structure. Truck companies deployed ladder pipes and engine companies put large diameter hand lines in place. Over 100 firefighters battled the fire for 95 minutes before Assistant Chief John Drake declared a knockdown.

Due to roof collapse, the building was filled with debris and prevented firefighters from conducting a visual search for any potential victims. Human Remain Detection K9 teams responded and made their way up, over and through the detritus to provide a more thorough search of the area. There were no victims located and no injuries reported to firefighters or civilians.

The LAFD Tractor Company utilized the RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle to safely reach pockets of fire remaining in areas too unstable for firefighter-staffed hand lines. They also used an excavator and skid steer with grapple bucket to pull down unstable sections of the building (for safety) and overhaul the large debris piles.

Due to the size of the incident, the LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded. After completing their investigation, the official cause is 'undetermined'.

At 12:04AM on January 1, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 13100 block of W Bracken St. 38 firefighters extinguished an outside fire which extended both to a converted garage and the main residence in 35 minutes with no injuries reported.

SHERMAN OAKS - On March 15, 2019, LAFD responded to a structure fire at 13711 W Ventura Blvd. Arriving companies found a single story commercial with fire in the interior mezzanine and attic. The fire was possibly caused by extension from an outdoor rubbish fire. Companies quickly knocked down the blaze.

Greater Alarm Fire in Central-Alameda by Los Angeles Fire Department

On December 28th, at 5:30AM the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a reported structure fire at 1842 E 41st Place in Central-Alameda. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire already burning through the roof, immediately forcing a defensive operation. Crews worked quickly to get multiple ladder pipes flowing water while forcible entry opened up the structure to allow hand line access to the blaze.

Over 100 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Antoine McKnight, faced not only the intense flames but additional hazards from a partial roof collapse, high-voltage wires arcing and exterior walls starting to crumble. The 4,880 square foot building, constructed in 1940, stood next to several businesses to include an adjacent pallet yard which contained a high fire load. Only through the dedicated efforts of the LAFD firefighters was this fire extinguished in 90 minutes with no injuries while also preventing damage to the surrounding businesses.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section is actively investigating the cause per standard protocol for a fire of this magnitude.

At 11:48PM on December 30, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 15000 block of W Weddington St for a reported structure fire. Firefighters found heavy fire showing from a one story, single family dwelling with two additional homes exposed to the flames. 26 firefighters safely extinguished the blaze in 32 minutes, defended the adjacent homes from damage.

Overnight Blaze Gravely Injures Teenager by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:18AM on August 25, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 717 W 52nd Place in South Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived to find a one story, single family dwelling well involved with fire and reports of people trapped.

The volume and intensity of the flames required firefighters to conduct a transitional attack prior to entering the structure for an interior fire attack. The transitional attack involves the application of a straight stream of water from the exterior of the structure that provides a brief ‘break of the fire triangle’ by cooling the environment. This gives firefighters the chance to enter the building to more directly attack the flames.

Within minutes of arriving on scene, the first crews were inside and searching for trapped victims. They quickly located an unresponsive, 17 year old female and brought her out for immediate medical care. With lifesaving treatment underway, she was rapidly transported in grave condition. Three additional members of her family were home at the time of the fire. A 59 year old male suffered non-life threatening burn injuries and was transported to the hospital. A 60 year old female and 40 year old female were not injured. An additional 28 year old female was transported for injuries not related to the fire (from a home a couple doors down).

The occupants of the home reported having smoke alarms; however, there was no indication of functioning smoke alarms and they did not report being awoken by the alarms. This tragedy serves as a sober reminder for all our residents to ensure you check the battery on your smoke alarms on a monthly basis and replace them annually. The Mayor’s Crisis Response Team responded to assist the family through the difficult experience. The cause of the fire is under active investigation by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS).

Major Emergency Blaze Consumes Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:48PM on November 25, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1820 E 48th Place in the Central-Alameda area. The address, site of a Greater Alarm fire two nights prior, included four large, adjoining buildings which housed multiple businesses. Heavy fire was showing from one building, already through the roof upon LAFD arrival.

Truck companies deployed ladder pipes and engine companies flowed wagon batteries while establishing large diameter hand lines. Forcible entry was required to open all the rolling steel doors and give firefighters access to the blaze from the exterior.

An entrenched battle continued through the night with 115 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Kristina Kepner, working aggressively to defend the adjoining structures. Their efforts prevented the fire from extending and protected numerous businesses.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section had an open investigation into the cause of the fire at this address on November 23, 2021 and were on scene to conduct the cause investigation into this fire as well, which remains ongoing.

Sherman Oaks Strip Mall Destroyed by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 10:48PM on January 12, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 15000 block of W Ventura Bl in Sherman Oaks. The first arriving crews found a small strip mall with heavy smoke showing.

After an initial offensive attack, the incident transitioned to defensive and 75 firefighters extinguished the fire in one hour at 20 minutes with no injuries reported.

At 9:36PM, on June 16, 2020, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 1600 block of W Ofarrell St in San Pedro for a reported structure fire. 30 firefighters extinguished the fire in 26 minutes with no injuries reported

Greater Alarm Fire in Koreatown by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 12:08AM on May 15, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of S Vermont Av in Koreatown. Firefighters arrived to find a commercial strip mall (mixed one and two story) with heavy fire showing from the 2nd story on one end of the mall. A defensive operation ensued and 71 firefighters fully extinguished the fire in 45 minutes. The facade of the building collapsed due to loss of structural integrity from a previous burn. LAFD Arson section is conducting the cause investigation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Major Emergency Structure Fire in Woodland Hills by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:10PM on July 3, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 6000 block of N De Soto Av for a reported structure fire.

The first arriving fire company found a large, one story commercial (vacant) building with heavy fire showing through the roof.

Firefighters immediately initiated a defensive operation and quickly determined the entire building was fully involved in fire.

With multiple ladder pipes flowing and large diameter hand lines deployed around the structure, firefighters battled for over an hour to quell the blaze. Their efforts ensure the neighboring buildings were not damaged. There were no injuries reported and there is an on-going cause investigation.

Two Injured, Including LAFD Firefighter, at Westlake District Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

The Los Angeles Fire Department received the first of several 9-1-1 calls at 6:31 PM on February 11, 2020, reporting a structure fire at 1435 West 2nd Street in the Westlake District of Los Angelels,

Fire crews arrived quckly to find fire on the first and second floors of an L-shaped two story residential five-plex, and soon encountered an adult male resident who sustained only minor injury when he lept from the second floor to escape the fast-moving flames. He declined ambulance transport to the hospital.

A bold and well-coordinated interior fire attack by 42 LAFD personnel under the command of Battalion Chief Scott La Rue, successfully confined the bulk of flames to the upper floor and attic - but not before the structure had sustained serious fire damage.

In the aftermath of the fierce 33 minute firefight, one firefighter sustained moderate injury, when a portion of the century old structure gave way, toppling him from the roof into a subgrade external light well at the perimeter of the 2,389 square-foot building.

Conscious and alert, the firefighter was taken by LAFD ambulance to an area hospital in fair condtion for treatment of signficant chest trauma that thankfully appeared to be non-life threatening. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

Two Detached Structures Damaged By Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - At 11:27 AM on March 14, 2022, the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 11500 block of West Kittridge Street and found two detached structures on fire at the rear of the property. Twenty-eight firefighters quickly extinguished the detached garage and an apparent accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in 17 minutes, without injury.

Major Emergency Fire in South LA by Los Angeles Fire Department

The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 2:19 PM on April 3, 2021 to 8730 South Crocker Street, where firefighters arrived quickly to find an outside fire that had extended into a 300' x 300' one story row of three or more commercial buildings under what appeared to be a contiguous roof.

Defensive firefighting operations under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman continued for 4 hours and 4 minutes, until the fire was declared extinguished at 6:23 PM. No injuries were reported.

The expansive structure, initially believed to house only a furniture manufacturing firm, appeared to also contain one or more other firms, including a large marijuana grow operation.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

East Hollywood Fire Destroys Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:33AM on October 27, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4760 W Melrose Ave in East Hollywood. Firefighters arrived to find a two story, vacant center hall apartment building with heavy fire showing.

Interior fire attack immediately made entry while the truck company went to the roof to provide vertical ventilation. Heavy fire was encountered both on the first and second floors. As firefighters successfully extinguished the bulk of the fire on the first floor, the structural integrity of the building started to falter. With visible signs of pending collapse, Incident Commander Asssitant Chief Kristina Kepner made the call to transition to a defensive operation.

All firefighters safely exited the structure and left the roof to establish ladder pipe operations and hand lines for an exterior fire attack. 81 firefighters achieved a knockdown of the fire in 1 hour and 22 minutes with no injuries reported. A human remains detection K9 team responded to the incident to conduct a thorough search to ensure no victims were hidden under the debris. The cause of the fire is under active investigation by the LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section.

At 10:32PM on December 24, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 4000 block of S Woodlawn Av for a reported structure fire. Firefighters found a one story bungalow with smoke showing. The first arriving fire companies extinguished the fire in 15 minutes with no injuries reported.

Reseda Wind-Driven Vegetation and Structure Fires Threaten Homes by Los Angeles Fire Department

RESEDA - A wind-driven tree fire spread through several blocks burning structures and vegetation.

On Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:53 AM, LAFD responded to a structure fire at the 18000 block of Elkwood St. The fire appeared to have started in ornamental vegetation near Strathern St, then was fueled by wind and pushed several blocks to the south across Blythe, Arminta, Elkwood and Ingomar. A post-fire survey revealed that only two homes sustained minor fire damage, and four out buildings were damaged or destroyed. LAFD Firefighters were on scene just three minutes after being dispatched and acted quickly to prevent this situation from becoming much worse in the warm/windy conditions, with an attack that included water-dropping helicopters. It took 68 firefighters 49 minutes to extinguish all of the flames. There were no injuries. The fire is under investigation.

At 11:14AM on July 25, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 570 block of N Normandie Av in East Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived to a vacant to story fourplex with heavy fire showing.

Crews initiated an offensive operation, simultaneously conducted vertical ventilation and interior fire attack.

The incident rose to the Greater Alarm level with over 70 firefighters achieving knockdown in two hours and three minutes.

Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with heat related illness and returned to duty later that day.

Stubborn Commercial Fire in Pico-Robertson by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:32AM on July 24, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 9041 W Pico Blvd. Firefighters arrived to find a 100’ x 50’ commercial building with heavy smoke showing.

Firefighters quickly threw ground ladders to the building, took a fire attack line inside and ascended the aerial ladder to initiate vertical ventilation. After working an aggressive, offensive attack for 28 minutes the conditions continued to deteriorate and the Incident Commander made the call to move to a defensive operation.

With master streams applying copious amounts of water into the structure, using the collapsed roof as a way to access the pockets of fire, crews gained the upper hand. 115 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, extinguished this Greater Alarm structure fire in two hours and 13 minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a non-life threatening heat related illness.

While no evacuations of the area were required, there was one home to the rear of the fire unit which was blanketed with the smoke. An elderly couple was sheltered in place and two paramedics stayed with them to ensure they were safe. They did not require any medical treatment and the home remained free of smoke.

One of the operations firefighters conduct at structure fire is called, Salvage. This entails covering, removing or otherwise protecting contents of a structure, as best as possible, from suffering damage during an emergency. This usually happens inside of a home; however, at this incident firefighters took the initiative to cover three vehicles with tarps. The cars were right in the middle of the fire ground and would likely be dinged or damaged in some way.

The initial stages of the cause investigation, by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section, revealed evidence of a possible drug operation in the structure. The investigation remains active and on-going.

High Rise Fire Sends Two to Hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 12:37PM the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Sheraton Hotel at 10600 W Universal Place. Firefighters ascended to the 9th floor to find a fire in one room being held in check by sprinklers. They extinguished the fire and conducted a search, finding an adult male employee in the adjacent room. The floor was under construction with no guests in place. The patient transported in grave condition and one male firefighter transported in fair/serious condition with non-traumatic illness.

Greater Alarm Fire in Downtown LA by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:03PM on October 30, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 917 S San Julian Street in Downtown LA. The first arriving fire companies saw heavy smoke coming from the back of a commercial building. They located an outside fire and worked to quickly extinguish it. Despite their efforts, the fire had already extended into the adjacent one story commercial building.

Firefighters forced entry into the 10,832 square foot building (housing three businesses) and initiated an interior fire attack. They continued to work their way into the building while visibility dropped, yet the seat of the fire remained out of reach. Truck companies, on the roof of the building, conducted vertical ventilation, resulting in both fire and pressurized smoke emanating from the holes. It was determined the fire was above the interior crews, likely on a mezzanine which was inaccessible to them. The deteriorating conditions created an untenable position and the incident commander, Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, made the decision to transition to a defensive operation.

With all firefighters out of the building and off the roof, company officers conducted an accountability report to ensure all were safe and present while preparing for master streams. Over the next 90 minutes, crews applied copious amounts of water from ladder pipes and large diameter hand lines to drown out the blaze. Pockets of fire remained out of reach due to the style of construction and once the conditions improved enough, firefighters returned to an offensive mode. An official ‘knockdown’ was declared two hours and nine minutes into the incident. Firefighters defended a second building, exposed to the fire, from any damage.

One firefighter was transported with a heat-related illness and returned to full duty a short while later. LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and are actively investigating the cause of the fire, following protocol for an incident of this size.

LAFD Prevents Burning Hillside Home from Sparking Brush Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

TARZANA - At 6:24 PM on Monday, August 2, 2021, LAFD responded to the 19600 block of West Valdez Drive, where a two-story hillside home was engulfed in flames, with fire starting to ignite nearby brush. Firefighters began the attack in defensive mode (from the exterior only), and later transitioned to offensive (inside the structure) to finish tracking down all of the fire within. Ultimately, it took 57 LAFD firefighters 33 minutes to extinguish the flames and keep a larger brush fire from ignition. The family escaped unharmed, but four will be displaced. No reported injuries.

At 9PM on August 27, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 12100 block of W Victory Bl in North Hollywood.63 firefighters took just 29 minutes to extinguish the flames in a three-story commercial building. The fire was burning on the first floor and into the elevator shaft, sending smoke throughout the building. Initial reports of a person trapped inside made the interior search a high priority. Thankfully, no patients were located inside the structure and no injuries were reported.

Midnight Blaze in South Los Angeles by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 10:55PM on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 1700 block of E 57th Street for a reported structure fire. The first arriving companies found a large (approximately 300’ x 500’) pallet yard with heavy fire showing. Additional resources were quickly requested as crews moved into the defensive mode.

Firefighters went to work on all four sides of this incident, conducting fire attack against several outbuildings in the compound of the yard while simultaneously establishing master streams to drown out the pallet fire. Downed, high voltage power lines created an additional safety hazard for crews to work around.

116 LAFD firefighters, assisted by several companies from Los Angeles County Fire Department, working under the command of Assistant Chief Antoine McKnight, declared a knockdown of the fire in one hour and four minutes, with no injuries reported. No residential homes outside of the compound were damaged.

This was a Major Emergency status structure fire and thus, per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and are actively investigating the cause of the fire.

Delmar Fire Dept assisted Sharptown with a working commerical building fire today. Tanker 74-5 and Engine-Tanker 74-2 responded from Delmar. Firefighters from 3 Counties and 2 States were at the scene. Sharptown, Mardela Springs, Hebron, El Dorado-Brookview, Laurel and Delmar FD's responded.

RV Fire Prevented from Spreading by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:52AM on May 17, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 10900 block of W Crockett St. Firefighters found a RV fire, exposing a single family dwelling. The crews gained a quick knockdown of the fire and preventing damage to the adjacent residence (damage only to patio cover). There were no injuries reported.

Reseda Fire Kills Occupant by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:53PM on July 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 7700 block of N Aura Av for a reported structure fire. 36 firefighters fully extinguished the fire in 14 minutes. Firefighters encountered excessive storage conditions inside which delayed access. Crews located and rescued one patient (65yo M) in grave condition and provided rapid transport with advanced life saving measures. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. LAFD Arson Section is actively investigating, per protocol for a fatality.

Encino Vacant Structure Destroyed by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:28PM on March 13, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 9400 block of N Sepulveda Blvd in Encino. 47 firefighters extinguished a well involved structure fire in 32 minutes. As this building was the site of a previous burn, the roof was already well ventilated and it was a defensive operation only.

Two Injured, Including LAFD Firefighter, at Westlake District Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

The Los Angeles Fire Department received the first of several 9-1-1 calls at 6:31 PM on February 11, 2020, reporting a structure fire at 1435 West 2nd Street in the Westlake District of Los Angelels,

Fire crews arrived quckly to find fire on the first and second floors of an L-shaped two story residential five-plex, and soon encountered an adult male resident who sustained only minor injury when he lept from the second floor to escape the fast-moving flames. He declined ambulance transport to the hospital.

A bold and well-coordinated interior fire attack by 42 LAFD personnel under the command of Battalion Chief Scott La Rue, successfully confined the bulk of flames to the upper floor and attic - but not before the structure had sustained serious fire damage.

In the aftermath of the fierce 33 minute firefight, one firefighter sustained moderate injury, when a portion of the century old structure gave way, toppling him from the roof into a subgrade external light well at the perimeter of the 2,389 square-foot building.

Conscious and alert, the firefighter was taken by LAFD ambulance to an area hospital in fair condtion for treatment of signficant chest trauma that thankfully appeared to be non-life threatening. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

Encino Apartment Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:41PM on March 19, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 5400 block of N Yarmouth Av in Encino. Firefighters chased a stubborn fire in the walls which extended to the common attic of a building with two story apartment units. The fire was extinguished in 56 minutes with no injuries reported.

At 3:27AM on December 19,2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 14400 block of W Terra Bella St for a reported structure fire. The first arriving 30 Firefighters extinguished an outside fire that extended into and was confined within a classroom attached to a church (20 minutes). There were no injuries reported.
