Granada Hills Fire Kills One, Destroys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

GRANADA HILLS - Just after 5 a.m. on September 28, 2019, firefighters found a one-story home engulfed in flames on the 10400 block of Densmore Ave. Excessive storage conditions inside and out impeded efforts to quickly access the burning structure. It took 72 firefighters 50 minutes to extinguish the blaze. Firefighters combed through the excessive storage conditions inside the destroyed structure after the flames were extinguished and discovered one deceased occupant (73-year-old female). Mayor's Crisis Response Team and Red Cross responded for on scene support.

At 12:52 on January 1, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 10300 block of S Antwerp St for a reported structure fire. 38 firefighters extinguished the non-injury attic fire in 13 minutes.

Fire Destroys Trailer in Shadow Hills by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 4:03PM on November 13, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 8600 block of W La Tuna Canyon Road for a reported structure fire. The first arriving fire companies found an outside fire, well involved travel trailer, exposing a single family dwelling. While firefighters conducted an offensive fire attack, additional crews sequestered a number of exotic animals on the property to ensure they were safe. A knockdown was achieved in 21 minutes. Two adult patients (one male and one female) were evaluated on scene and later declined LAFD transport. The cause is under investigation.

Third Street Fire in Downtown Los Angeles by Los Angeles Fire Department

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 1:50 AM on June 8, 2021 to the 200 block of East 3rd Street in Downtown Los Angeles, where firefighters arrived quickly to find a century-old commercial building engulfed in flames.

One hundred-fifty firefighters under the command of Assistant Chief Ernst confined the fire to a 200' x 50' three-story commercial building, saving nearby multi-story residential structures. Firefighters battled for over three hours to knock down the bulk of the flames. The structural integrity of the building was too compromised for firefighters to enter and finish extinguishment. Heavy machinery was brought in to move debris and uncover the many remaining hot spots. Firefighters stayed for most of the day to monitor the smoldering debris and continue to apply water when possible.

There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross assisted unhoused persons whose tents were destroyed by fire, while Inspectors from the City's Department of Building & Safety examined the fire building to determine its structural integrity and potential for repair. Monetary loss from the fire is still being tabulated.

LAFD Fire Investigators have concluded their investigation and the cause will remain "undetermined." Evidence confirmed that the fire began inside the structure and is not related to the individuals in tents outside the structure. Due to the compromised structural integrity of the fire unit and partial building collapse in the probable area of ignition, investigators were unable to determine anything further.

Residential Fire Damages Three Structures by Los Angeles Fire Department

CANOGA PARK - At 2:49 PM on March 16, 2022, Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the 7300 block of North Loma Verde Avenue. Firefighters found heavy fire coming from a one-story single-family home, which had spread to one neighboring home (and minor damage to a detached garage). The incident commander requested additional units and divided the fire ground crews into groups to attack all burning structures simultaneously. Ultimately, it took 39 firefighters 31 minutes to eliminate all threat of fire in the area. Although there were no injuries, sadly, one family canine perished in the blaze. Fire cause under investigation.

Firefighters Evacuate Businesses and Residences While Fighting Downtown Blaze by Los Angeles Fire Department

DOWNTOWN - Los Angeles City Firefighters battled a Downtown structure fire, which began as a large outside rubbish fire which spread to several businesses in a row of commercial buildings, that had occupied residential units across the second floor.

Firefighters responded to the Flower District of Downtown Los Angeles at 3:12 PM on June 22, 2023, to find heavy fire involving outside storage in the rear behind a long 2-story building, with residential units over a row of commercials, with heavy fire showing. The Incident Commander called for waves of additional firefighters, and placed companies in all involved units on the first floor, second floor, roof, and outside to the rear.

The fire appeared to have originated as an exterior fire to the rear, with flames rapidly spreading inside the first floor commercial space, and threatening to burn more units horizontally. Firefighters assisted with evacuations, and performed a rapid and systematic search of all units, and halted the horizontal spread. Fortunately, no victims were trapped.

Ultimately, it took 148 firefighters one hour and thirty-five minutes to extinguish the blaze. The fire unit of origin was a venue rental business, who loaned out supplies for

weddings, and social events, therefore there was a heavy fuel load inside that fueled the fire.

As always, we mourn the loss of the approximately four commercial units downstairs and four residential units directly above suffered damaged, but remain thankful that this incident did not end up being significantly worse. Red Cross responded to assist approximately 30 residents who were displaced. Thankfully, only one person (a 28-year-old female) was transported to the hospital in fair condition, and a second (a 50-year-old male) was evaluated and declined transport (both had symptoms of smoke inhalation). Arson investigators responded to determine fire origin, per protocol.

Stubborn Wall Fire Handled Quickly by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 2:38 PM on October 16, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 17700 block of W Devonshire St in #Northridge. Firefighters initially saw very light smoke and found workers in kitchen of 2 story condo. Upon further investigation, crews determine a fire was in the walls of the kitchen and moving up towards the 2nd floor. Working quickly to locate the fire, firefighters it from extending and damaging the entire structure.

At 8:12PM on February 12, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 13500 block of W Moorpark St for a reported structure fire. 34 firefighter achieved a knockdown in 20 minutes, containing the fire to the unit of origin on the 2nd floor of a two story, garden style apartment building.

Greater Alarm Fire in Van Nuys by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:29PM on December 28, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 7800 block of N Balboa Bl in Van Nuys for a reported structure fire. Firefighters located a one story, commercial building (housing multiple businesses) with fire showing through the roof. 76 firefighters extinguished the fire in 36 minutes with no injuries reported. The fire destroyed the unit of origin and damaged the adjacent units. A mobile home/RV park next to the building was defended against the blaze.There were no injuries reported.

Sun Valley Major Emergency Structure Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:30PM on November 7, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 8100 block of N Sunland Bl in Sun Valley. Firefighters arrived to a two story, commercial building (site of previous burn) with heavy fire showing. In a mostly defensive operation, 87 firefighters battled flames with at least four ladder pipes and several other heavy streams in operation on the commercial building for over two hours before safely achieving a knockdown.

Stubborn Commercial Fire in Pico-Robertson by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:32AM on July 24, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 9041 W Pico Blvd. Firefighters arrived to find a 100’ x 50’ commercial building with heavy smoke showing.

Firefighters quickly threw ground ladders to the building, took a fire attack line inside and ascended the aerial ladder to initiate vertical ventilation. After working an aggressive, offensive attack for 28 minutes the conditions continued to deteriorate and the Incident Commander made the call to move to a defensive operation.

With master streams applying copious amounts of water into the structure, using the collapsed roof as a way to access the pockets of fire, crews gained the upper hand. 115 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, extinguished this Greater Alarm structure fire in two hours and 13 minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a non-life threatening heat related illness.

While no evacuations of the area were required, there was one home to the rear of the fire unit which was blanketed with the smoke. An elderly couple was sheltered in place and two paramedics stayed with them to ensure they were safe. They did not require any medical treatment and the home remained free of smoke.

One of the operations firefighters conduct at structure fire is called, Salvage. This entails covering, removing or otherwise protecting contents of a structure, as best as possible, from suffering damage during an emergency. This usually happens inside of a home; however, at this incident firefighters took the initiative to cover three vehicles with tarps. The cars were right in the middle of the fire ground and would likely be dinged or damaged in some way.

The initial stages of the cause investigation, by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section, revealed evidence of a possible drug operation in the structure. The investigation remains active and on-going.

LAFD Incident: 072420-0570

Multiple Businesses Saved in Woodland Hills by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:26PM on June 14, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 20934 W Victory Blvd in Woodland Hills. Firefighters arrived to find a large (16,544 sq ft), one story row of commercials with fire showing from the end unit. The truck company went to the roof as fire attack intiated their entry through the front. An additional company went around to the back of the structure to evaluate possible access points. While roof division began cutting ventilation holes, fire attack reported difficulty in locating the seat of the fire. Firefighters continued pushing into the unit but the intense heat prevented their advance before reaching the (still not located) fire. With fire in the building's common attic, it became an untenable position for interior fire attack. Incident Commander, Assistant Chief Corey Rose, made the call to transition to a defensive operation. The companies at the back of the structure were able to open up a rolling steel door and using large diameter handlines, hit the fire from the outside.

Once the bulk of the flames abated, the incident reverted to an offensive operation and firefighters moved inside to pull ceiling and ensure no extension through the attic. Official 'knockdown' was achieved by 106 firefighters at the 49 minute mark. Their diligent efforts stopped this fire from moving across businesses and leaving a trail of destruction. The business adjacent to the fire unit suffered water/smoke damage and the two additional units only sustained smoke damage.

Paramedics evaluated one civilian patient who declined LAFD transport. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. LAFD Arson responded and this remains an active investigation with cause and dollar loss to be determined.

Extinguishment achieved in 19 minutes with no injuries reported.

Sunland Man Perishes at Garage Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 2:04PM on April 13, 2020, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call initially reported as an electrocution in the 8700 block of W Wyngate Street in Sunland. While units were enroute to the call, the incident was upgraded to a structure fire response.

The first arriving companies found a detached garage, (in a townhome community), with heavy fire showing. Firefighters initiated an aggressive offensive attack and quickly extinguished the fire. While conducting a primary search of the interior, they located an adult male beyond medical help. He was determined dead on scene. One additional patient, an approximately 16 year old male, was transported in fair condition.

The LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded, per protocol for a fatality, for the investigation. The incident remains under active investigation and includes the Los Angeles Police Department and Department of Water and Power. The LA County Coroner will confirm identity and determine the cause of death.

Four Injures, Five Structures Damaged in Hollywood Fire

HOLLYWOOD - Fast moving flames damaged five residential buildings and led to four persons sustaining injury in the Hollywood Studio District Friday morning.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was notified by a 9-1-1 caller at 9:08 AM on Friday, January 22, 2021 of a structure fire at 1245 North Bronson Avenue in Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived quickly to find a vacant and boarded one story home in a large unkempt lot, fully involved with fire, with flames extending to a vacant home on the same parcel.

Fire was simultaneously taking hold of the attic at an occupied two story Craftsman-style home on a neighboring property to the north, and yet another vacant home on the same parcel, behind that structure. Flames also threatened an occupied three story garden-style apartment building to the south.

The fierce and well-coordinated firefight by 97 firefighters under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman extinguished the flames in just 39 minutes.

Damage to the apartment building was kept largely superficial, with some broken windows and damage to a balcony. The effort of LAFD responders also largely limited fire within the attic of the Craftsman-style home.

The trio of other vacant structures, including the building of fire origin and the somewhat dilapidated buildings to the rear of each home, were destroyed by the flames, which also damaged at least one vehicle.

Three civilians and one firefighter sustained non-life threatening injuries related to the fire, with the three civilians taken to area hospitals for further care, including an adult male resident of the apartment building with burns to his arm, and a pair of adult females from the Craftsman-style home - one of whom sustained minor burn injury, and the other, who had no obvious injury, but was carried from the premises by passersby prior to LAFD arrival.

The firefighter, who sustained facial trauma at the peak of the firefight, was briefly assessed and treated at scene before returning quickly to the battle.

No other injuries were reported.

Fire loss to the five buildings, three of which were vacant, is still being tabulated. The cause of the greater alarm fire remains under active investigation.

LAFD Extinguishes Pacoima House Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

PACOIMA - It took 24 firefighters 19 minutes to extinguish the fully-involved single-family home at the 10300 block of North Rincon Avenue on September 28,2022, despite live wires down and a roof collapse at the site of a previous burn. Firefighters successfully defended the neighboring structures. Primary and secondary searches of the structure were clear (no patients found). No reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

LAFD Fights Second Tarzana Greater Alarm Fire of the Day by Los Angeles Fire Department

TARZANA - Less than four hours after a Greater Alarm residential fire in Tarzana on Saturday, May 9, 2020, another Greater Alarm fire broke out in a commercial structure. LAFD battled fire in a one-story commercial building. After performing forcible entry to gain access, firefighters deployed hose lines into the structure, as truck companies ascended ladders to the roof. It took 59 firefighters 32 minutes to extinguish the flames. One firefighter sustained a non-life-threatening injury. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Chatsworth Blaze Destroys Business by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:53PM on December 16, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to 20150 W Sunburst St for a reported structure fire.

The first arriving fire companies found a one story, commercial building with fire through the roof and requested additional resources. The 28,556 square foot building, built in 1981, was well involved in fire and a decision was quickly made to transition to a defensive mode.

Truck companies put ladder pipes into operation and firefighters used large diameter hand lines to hit the target from all sides. Crews successfully defended the adjacent structures from sustaining damage.

Ultimately, over 120 firefighters working under the leadership of Assistant Chief Corey Rose achieved a knockdown in one hour and thirty-four minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening burn injuries.

The concrete, tilt-up building sustained heavy damage, to include roof collapse, which left it dangerously vulnerable to further collapse of the walls. Consequently, the Department of Building and Safety red-tagged the structure for safety purposes. Overhaul operations and cause investigation were held off until morning while fire companies remained on scene in a fire watch. The RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle was also on scene to assist with interior operations if needed through the night.

LAFD Swiftly Quenches Flames in Vacant NoHo Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - It took 100 Los Angeles Fire Department responders less than 45 minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish a non-injury greater alarm structure fire at 6261 Laurel Canyon Boulevard on December 13, 2021. The blaze, reported at 3:37 PM, consumed a central portion of a long vacant 250' x 100' row of businesses that had been the site of a previous fire.

At 9:41PM on March 31, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 12500 block of W Sheldon St in Sun Valley. 31 firefighters extinguished the fire in 21 minutes. There are three structures on the property and firefighters contained the fire to the unit of origin. A primary and secondary search were clear with no injuries reported.

At 11:07PM on March 7, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 19200 block of W Saticoy for a reported structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find a two-story garden-style apartment with fire showing. Crews quickly deployed hose lines and contained the fire to its unit of origin. It took 26 firefighters just 13 minutes to extinguish the flames. Firefighter-paramedics evaluated and treated four patients, and transported at two of them to the hospital .Thankfully, everyone escaped the building, as audible alarms could be heard from functional smoke detectors warning occupants of the danger.

Attic Fire in DTLA Commercial Building by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 1:59PM on Tuesday 1 August, 2017, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1000 block of S Santee St.

Firefighters arrived to find a two story, commercial building with heavy smoke showing from the 2nd floor. Additional resources were requested, raising the incident to a Greater Alarm status.

As fire attack crews made entry and the truck began vertical ventilation operations on the roof, a raging attic fire was discovered. The fire extended to the 2nd floor and firefighters quickly extinguished that section of the fire.

The battle against the attic fire continued, working to hit all corners of the attic to knockdown the stubborn blaze. 90 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Surgey Tomlinson, achieved complete knockdown in 34 minutes. All occupants were clear of the structure and no injuries were reported.

Wind Driven Vegetation Fire Extends to Commercial Buildings in Sun Valley by Los Angeles Fire Department

SUN VALLEY - More than 165 members of the Los Angeles Fire Department were joined by firefighters from the neighboring cities of Burbank and Glendale on November 19, 2022, in a two-and-one-half hour battle against a Santa Ana wind-driven wildfire that quickly consumed nearly two acres of vegetation adjacent to the Golden State (I-5) Freeway at Penrose Avenue, before spreading within and heavily damaging a nearby automotive repair and salvage firm, as well as an adjacent custom cabinetry business in a pair of large adjoining metal-clad one story commercial buildings. No injuries were reported.

Downtown LA Commercial Fire Hampered By Fire Sprinklers by Los Angeles Fire Department

LOS ANGELES - LAFD responded to 1620 South Los Angeles Street at 2:44 A.M. on January 18, 2020. A one-story commercial building contained a fire inside being held in check by fire sprinklers. This caused excessive smoke to build up with only minimal growth of the fire. Interior fire attack companies searched for the seat of the fire in very low visibility conditions, while navigating through excessive storage of textiles. Firefighters on the roof cut holes to ventilate the structure, letting some of the thick smoke out into the early morning sky, improving conditions for firefighters inside. Ultimately, 55 firefighters extinguished the fire in 49 minutes, with no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.

With master streams applying copious amounts of water into the structure, using the collapsed roof as a way to access the pockets of fire, crews gained the upper hand. 115 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, extinguished this Greater Alarm structure fire in two hours and 13 minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a non-life threatening heat related illness.

While no evacuations of the area were required, there was one home to the rear of the fire unit which was blanketed with the smoke. An elderly couple was sheltered in place and two paramedics stayed with them to ensure they were safe. They did not require any medical treatment and the home remained free of smoke.

One of the operations firefighters conduct at structure fire is called, Salvage. This entails covering, removing or otherwise protecting contents of a structure, as best as possible, from suffering damage during an emergency. This usually happens inside of a home; however, at this incident firefighters took the initiative to cover three vehicles with tarps. The cars were right in the middle of the fire ground and would likely be dinged or damaged in some way.

The initial stages of the cause investigation, by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section, revealed evidence of a possible drug operation in the structure. The investigation remains active and on-going.

Fire at Panorama City Walmart by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:22PM on March 18, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 8333 N Van Nuys Bl in Panorama City.

Firefighters arrived to find a large four story, commercial building (Walmart) with nothing showing but an evacuation was underway. As crews made their way into the building to investigate, they located a fire on the 2nd floor, in a retail area, being held in check by fire sprinklers.

As firefighters made their interior attack, additional members worked to locate the risers and shut off the water to all sprinklers. Fire sprinklers (exact numbers vary based on the type installed) dispense approximately 15-25 gallons of water per minute, thus shutting of the system is an important part of the salvage operations to minimize water damage.

Store employees proactively evacuated the store when the fire alarm activated and it was underway upon LAFD arrival. Their actions helped to limit potential injuries. Four people (two employees and two customers) were medically evaluated and all declined LAFD hospital transport.

Ultimately, over 70 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Corey Rose, fully extinguished the fire in 53 minutes. Crews remained on scene for several hours, working to remove the standing water and clear the building of smoke.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded and are actively investigating the cause. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health responded and formally closed the store for safety purposes.

At 8:12PM on February 12, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the 13500 block of W Moorpark St for a reported structure fire. 34 firefighter achieved a knockdown in 20 minutes, containing the fire to the unit of origin on the 2nd floor of a two story, garden style apartment building.

At 11:50PM on January 19, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded toa reported structure fire in the 13800 block of W Polk Street in #Sylmar. Firefighters found a two story, metal clad garage fully involved in fire and extending to a 1 story garage directly behind it. 48 firefighters achieved full extinguishment in 36 mins with no injuries reported. The main residence was not damaged.

Flames Destroy Hollywood Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

HOLLYWOOD - The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned to the 1400 block of North Martel Avenue at 4:42 PM on November 3, 2022 for a structure fire involving a one-story single family home. Firefighters navigated around downed wires on approach, where flames consumed the home. It took 42 firefighters 43 minutes to access, confine, and extinguish the flames, without injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

With heavy fire and smoke showing upon arrival, 45 firefighters gained knockdown and defended an exposed building in 25 mins. No injuries reported and two pet dogs located safely.

Major Emergency Fire in South LA by Los Angeles Fire Department

The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 2:19 PM on April 3, 2021 to 8730 South Crocker Street, where firefighters arrived quickly to find an outside fire that had extended into a 300' x 300' one story row of three or more commercial buildings under what appeared to be a contiguous roof.

Defensive firefighting operations under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman continued for 4 hours and 4 minutes, until the fire was declared extinguished at 6:23 PM. No injuries were reported.

The expansive structure, initially believed to house only a furniture manufacturing firm, appeared to also contain one or more other firms, including a large marijuana grow operation.

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

Heavy Fire Damages Van Nuys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:09PM on August 21, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 7100 block of N Mammoth Av for a reported structure fire. Crews arrived to find a single story dwelling with heavy fire showing. 83 firefighters extinguished the fire in 46 minutes with no injuries reported. The excessive storage inside the structure presented a challenge in safely reaching the seat of the fire. The fire extended into the attic but was prevented from spreading to a neighboring residence. The cause is under investigation by LAFD Arson Section.

LAFD Extinguishes House Fire in Sun Valley by Los Angeles Fire Department

SUN VALLEY - Your Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned to 8730 N Bradley Avenue in Sun Valley at 11:53 P.M. on March 9, 2020, to find a one-story single family home with fire in the living space and extending into the attic. Thirty-one firefighters extinguished the fire in twenty minutes, keeping the fire from spreading to nearby homes, while avoiding arcing wires down in the street near a fire engine. There were no reported injuries. Cause and dollar loss TBD.

Studio City Blazes Destroys Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:40AM on March 13, 2020 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 3700 block of N Eureka Drive. Firefighters found a large, one story home well involved in fire exposing two additional residences. After a battle spanning one hour and 18 minutes, the 52 firefighters on scene fully extinguished the fire. The two adjacent homes were defending from the fire extending, limiting it to some minor exterior damage to one home. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Due to the size of the building, LAFD Arson section responded to investigate the cause.

Multiple Businesses Saved in Downtown LA by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 5:35PM, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1400 block of South Long Beach Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles. With fire showing through the roof of a one story commercial building (doing business as I-Catcher Graphics), the responding companies immediately entered a defensive mode and requested additional resources.

Within minutes, the rear portion of the roof collapsed and an emergency traffic radio transmission warned of 'wires down', creating additional hazards to negotiate. With adjoining businesses on three sides of the fire building, firefighters focused both on extinguishing the blaze and defending the exposed structures. Crews deployed heavy streams through appliances (portable monitor and ladder pipes) and large diameter hand lines. Firefighters on the ground applied copious amounts of water through the front while additional firefighters positioned on the roof tops of the uninvolved, exposed buildings targeted the hard to reach areas.

Over 140 firefighters, under the leadership of Incident Commander Assistant Chief Carlos Calvillo, achieved 'knockdown' in one hour and 22 minutes with no injuries reported.

The well-orchestrated and doggedly fought battle successfully defended the fire from extending into any other buildings, saving an untold amount of money and property.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) is actively investigating the cause while the dollar loss is being tabulated.

Over 30 Businesses Saved in Van Nuys by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 2:44PM on October 12, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 7056 N Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys. The first fire company arrived to find a one story, vacant commercial building (7,600 square feet built in 1957) well involved in fire.

After initially deploying an offensive fire attack, the incident commander quickly transitioned to a defensive operation due to the extent of fire involvement. As crews established hand lines, a collapse zone of 30’ was implemented at the front of the building due to concern about the stability of the façade. Approximately 20 minutes into the incident, an ‘Emergency Traffic’ radio alert was issued informing all on the fire ground of the full collapse of the façade. All firefighters were safely outside the collapse zone and continued their operation without delay.

The building to the North (on the Bravo side) abutted the fire building while there was a small separation with the building to the South (on the Delta side). Despite the close proximity of the two exposures and the heavy fire present, firefighters battled and succeeded in defending the structures from fire damage – saving over thirty businesses.

It was a long, extended operation due to the amount of fire and challenges in safely access all areas of the building. The RS3, Robotic Fire Fighting Vehicle was deployed to apply high volumes of water (master streams) more deeply into the building than was safely possible by firefighters. The combination of hand lines, ladder-pipes, RS3 and the team of over 85 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Corey Rose, fully extinguished the fire in over four hours.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital in fair condition with heat exhaustion. There were no other injuries reported.

Per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and is actively investigating the cause of the fire.
