Stubborn Wall Fire Handled Quickly by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 2:38 PM on October 16, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 17700 block of W Devonshire St in #Northridge. Firefighters initially saw very light smoke and found workers in kitchen of 2 story condo. Upon further investigation, crews determine a fire was in the walls of the kitchen and moving up towards the 2nd floor. Working quickly to locate the fire, firefighters it from extending and damaging the entire structure.

Candle Fire Destroys Chatsworth Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 2:30AM on April 14, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 21000 block of W Plummer in Chatsworth. Firefighters arrived to find a mobile home fully involved in fire. Both occupants safely exited the structure but sadly, a pet cat and dog are believed to have perished. The cause was determined accidental, likely related to a candle.

Deadly Fire at Venice Hotel by Los Angeles Fire Department

The Los Angeles Fire Department was summoned at 2:04 AM on February 7, 2020, to 8686 West Venice Boulevard in Mid-City Los Angeles, where firefighters arrived quickly to find fire raging from both floors of a two-story hotel.

One hundred five firefighters under the command of Assistant Chief Kepner confined the fire to the structure of origin, extinguishing the flames in just 39 minutes. Firefighters assisted residents with a building-wide evacuation. At least thirty residents were staying on the premises and were displaced due to the fire.

Eight patients resulted from the blaze. Sadly, one patient succumbed to their injuries on scene, while five were transported to local hospitals (including one firefighter), one declined transport, and one was transported by private auto. A positive identification of the deceased, as well as the cause, time and manner of his death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross assisted at least 30 displaced hotel clients, while Inspectors from the City's Department of Building & Safety assessed the structure for damage and structural integrity.

Fire loss to the Venice Hotel is still being tabulated. The cause of this greater alarm fire has been determined to be accidental due to a space heater being used in close proximity to combustible materials. This is a sobering reminder that space heaters need space. The recommended space around a heater is three feet from any paper, clothing, blankets, curtains, walls, or anything else that could catch fire.

RV Fire Prevented from Spreading by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:52AM on May 17, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 10900 block of W Crockett St. Firefighters found a RV fire, exposing a single family dwelling. The crews gained a quick knockdown of the fire and preventing damage to the adjacent residence (damage only to patio cover). There were no injuries reported.

Rubbish Fire Spreads to Pacoima Pallet Yard by Los Angeles Fire Department

PACOIMA - At 2:23 PM on Sunday, August 1, 2021, on the 11000 block of North Sutter Avenue, LAFD responded to a rubbish fire that extended to a pallet yard, threatening nearby commercial buildings. Firefighters had the train tracks shut down and quickly doused the pallet yard fire, extinguishing the flames in 31 minutes and skillfully protecting the nearby structures. There were no reported injuries and no extension into the nearby buildings. The cause is under investigation.

Boyle Heights Fire Proves Stubborn by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 12:37AM on July 14, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 2200 block of E 1st St. Firefighters arrived to find a one story row of commercial units with fire showing. 100 firefighters battled and extinguished the stubborn fire in two hours and 10 minutes. This was an extended operation due to the difficulty accessing all areas of the fire because of the roof collapse. No were injuries reported. LAFD Arson Section responded for the cause investigation, per protocol for a fire of this size.

Smoke Alarms Save the Residents of a Bel Air Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

BEL AIR- 107 LAFD Firefighters extinguished the large fire inside a 7,500 sq ft home causing two firefighters to be transported to local hospitals. The occupied residence suffered significant damage, however due to firefighters relentless efforts they stopped the flames from spreading to the adjacent pool house, garage, and nearby brush. Fortunately the residents (homeowner, children, and nanny) were alerted by functional smoke alarms and self evacuated unharmed.

Stubborn Commercial Fire in Pico-Robertson by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:32AM on July 24, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 9041 W Pico Blvd. Firefighters arrived to find a 100’ x 50’ commercial building with heavy smoke showing.

Firefighters quickly threw ground ladders to the building, took a fire attack line inside and ascended the aerial ladder to initiate vertical ventilation. After working an aggressive, offensive attack for 28 minutes the conditions continued to deteriorate and the Incident Commander made the call to move to a defensive operation.

With master streams applying copious amounts of water into the structure, using the collapsed roof as a way to access the pockets of fire, crews gained the upper hand. 115 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, extinguished this Greater Alarm structure fire in two hours and 13 minutes. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a non-life threatening heat related illness.

While no evacuations of the area were required, there was one home to the rear of the fire unit which was blanketed with the smoke. An elderly couple was sheltered in place and two paramedics stayed with them to ensure they were safe. They did not require any medical treatment and the home remained free of smoke.

One of the operations firefighters conduct at structure fire is called, Salvage. This entails covering, removing or otherwise protecting contents of a structure, as best as possible, from suffering damage during an emergency. This usually happens inside of a home; however, at this incident firefighters took the initiative to cover three vehicles with tarps. The cars were right in the middle of the fire ground and would likely be dinged or damaged in some way.

The initial stages of the cause investigation, by LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section, revealed evidence of a possible drug operation in the structure. The investigation remains active and on-going.

Greater Alarm Fire in East Hollywood by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:14AM on July 25, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 570 block of N Normandie Av in East Hollywood.

Firefighters arrived to a vacant to story fourplex with heavy fire showing.

Crews initiated an offensive operation, simultaneously conducted vertical ventilation and interior fire attack.

The incident rose to the Greater Alarm level with over 70 firefighters achieving knockdown in two hours and three minutes.

Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with heat related illness and returned to duty later that day.

Sun Valley Fire Destroys Vacant Supermarket by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:11AM on July 22, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 8025 N Vineland Ave in Sun Valley. Two Los Angeles Police Department officers on patrol saw a rising smoke plume and located the fire to find it raging. They radioed in the location and went to check the doors to see if anyone was inside. The 82,000 square foot structure, built in 1958, was vacant and boarded up so they safely retreated to await the fire department.

When the first fire companies arrived, they found heavy fire at the back of the building had extended forward. The incident commander quickly implemented a defensive operation with crews on all four sides of the structure. Truck companies deployed ladder pipes and engine companies put large diameter hand lines in place. Over 100 firefighters battled the fire for 95 minutes before Assistant Chief John Drake declared a knockdown.

Due to roof collapse, the building was filled with debris and prevented firefighters from conducting a visual search for any potential victims. Human Remain Detection K9 teams responded and made their way up, over and through the detritus to provide a more thorough search of the area. There were no victims located and no injuries reported to firefighters or civilians.

The LAFD Tractor Company utilized the RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle to safely reach pockets of fire remaining in areas too unstable for firefighter-staffed hand lines. They also used an excavator and skid steer with grapple bucket to pull down unstable sections of the building (for safety) and overhaul the large debris piles.

Due to the size of the incident, the LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded. After completing their investigation, the official cause is 'undetermined'.

Firefighters Evacuate Businesses and Residences While Fighting Downtown Blaze by Los Angeles Fire Department

DOWNTOWN - Los Angeles City Firefighters battled a Downtown structure fire, which began as a large outside rubbish fire which spread to several businesses in a row of commercial buildings, that had occupied residential units across the second floor.

Firefighters responded to the Flower District of Downtown Los Angeles at 3:12 PM on June 22, 2023, to find heavy fire involving outside storage in the rear behind a long 2-story building, with residential units over a row of commercials, with heavy fire showing. The Incident Commander called for waves of additional firefighters, and placed companies in all involved units on the first floor, second floor, roof, and outside to the rear.

The fire appeared to have originated as an exterior fire to the rear, with flames rapidly spreading inside the first floor commercial space, and threatening to burn more units horizontally. Firefighters assisted with evacuations, and performed a rapid and systematic search of all units, and halted the horizontal spread. Fortunately, no victims were trapped.

Ultimately, it took 148 firefighters one hour and thirty-five minutes to extinguish the blaze. The fire unit of origin was a venue rental business, who loaned out supplies for

weddings, and social events, therefore there was a heavy fuel load inside that fueled the fire.

As always, we mourn the loss of the approximately four commercial units downstairs and four residential units directly above suffered damaged, but remain thankful that this incident did not end up being significantly worse. Red Cross responded to assist approximately 30 residents who were displaced. Thankfully, only one person (a 28-year-old female) was transported to the hospital in fair condition, and a second (a 50-year-old male) was evaluated and declined transport (both had symptoms of smoke inhalation). Arson investigators responded to determine fire origin, per protocol.

Greater Alarm Fire in Central-Alameda by Los Angeles Fire Department

On December 28th, at 5:30AM the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a reported structure fire at 1842 E 41st Place in Central-Alameda. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire already burning through the roof, immediately forcing a defensive operation. Crews worked quickly to get multiple ladder pipes flowing water while forcible entry opened up the structure to allow hand line access to the blaze.

Over 100 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Antoine McKnight, faced not only the intense flames but additional hazards from a partial roof collapse, high-voltage wires arcing and exterior walls starting to crumble. The 4,880 square foot building, constructed in 1940, stood next to several businesses to include an adjacent pallet yard which contained a high fire load. Only through the dedicated efforts of the LAFD firefighters was this fire extinguished in 90 minutes with no injuries while also preventing damage to the surrounding businesses.

LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section is actively investigating the cause per standard protocol for a fire of this magnitude.

Multiple Businesses Saved in Pacoima by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:08PM on March 29, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 13200 block of W Van Nuys Blvd in Pacoima. The first arriving fire company found a row of one story commercial units with fire showing through the roof and quickly requested additional resources.

With the bulk of the fire in one unit (2nd in from the end), the focus was to prevent the horizontal spread to adjoining businesses. The truck company went to the roof and placed themselves ahead of the fire to initiate a strip ventilation operation. Strip ventilation extends the entire width of the unit and creates a fire break which slows the fire's progress.

Meanwhile, an interior attack began but quickly encountered excessive storage conditions inside, hampering their progress. With the fire intensifying, the Incident Commander shifted strategies to a transitional attack, pulling all companies out of the building. Once officers confirmed all crews were out, large amounts of water were applied from the exterior, using both hand lines and wagon batteries (fixed appliance atop the fire engine). This tactic provides a brief 'break of the fire triangle' by cooling the environment which allows firefighters to resume an interior fire attack.

The bulk of the fire was at the rear (Charlie side) of the unit and while the preferred approach is to move from the 'uninvolved to the involved' portion of the building, the excessive storage conditions forced crews to make entry and conduct fire attack from the back.

Ultimately, over 70 firefighters, working under the command of Assistant Chief Corey Rose, extinguished the fire in 42 minutes with no injuries reported.

They contained the fire to the unit of origin (13289 Van Nuys Blvd, 3,400 sq ft unit built in 1955) with minimal damage to the adjoining business on the Alpha (southwest) side (13293 Van Nuys Blvd) and some damage to the roof members of the opposite adjoining unit (13287 Van Nuys Blvd). The rest of the businesses were defended from any fire damage.

Per protocol, LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section responded and it remains an active, open investigation.

At 8:38PM on January 9, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 13300 block of W Arminta St for a reported structure fire. The first arriving fire company found a one story, single family dwelling with heavy fire showing. 46 firefighters took 30 minutes to extinguish heavy fire in a 2,147 square-foot home. All four occupants exited the structure safely prior to LAFD arrival. There were no injuries reported.

At 7:40PM on July 4, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported vegetation fire in the 13500 block of W Borden St in Sylmar.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire burning in the yard of a single family dwelling. Crews quickly initiated a fire attack and extinguished the flames with no injuries reported.

The fire, started by the use of illegal fireworks, damaged a total of six vehicles and a tree.

Reseda Fire Kills Occupant by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:53PM on July 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 7700 block of N Aura Av for a reported structure fire. 36 firefighters fully extinguished the fire in 14 minutes. Firefighters encountered excessive storage conditions inside which delayed access. Crews located and rescued one patient (65yo M) in grave condition and provided rapid transport with advanced life saving measures. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. LAFD Arson Section is actively investigating, per protocol for a fatality.

Neighboring structures were also exposed as the 51 firefighters aggressively extinguished the flames in just 34 minutes. One civilian was transported in fair condition.

High Rise Fire Sends Two to Hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 12:37PM the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Sheraton Hotel at 10600 W Universal Place. Firefighters ascended to the 9th floor to find a fire in one room being held in check by sprinklers. They extinguished the fire and conducted a search, finding an adult male employee in the adjacent room. The floor was under construction with no guests in place. The patient transported in grave condition and one male firefighter transported in fair/serious condition with non-traumatic illness.

At midnight on June 10, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1900 block of S Staunton Av in Downtown Los Angeles. It developed into a Major Emergency structure fire in the defensive mode. 70 minutes after receiving the call, the 59 LAFD personnel assigned fully extinguished flames in the approx 100' x 250' 1 story concrete tilt-up building (unknown tenancy) No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under active investigation

LOS ANGELES - At 4:19AM on July 11, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 1220 South Wall Street in the downtown Los Angeles Fashion DIstrict, LAFD crews arrived quickly to find a 50’ x 100’ row of businesses with heavy smoke showing. The 6,900 square foot building, built in 1924, presented challenges to responders in reaching the fire. After approximately 20 minutes of working to locate the seat of the blaze while it continued to rage, the conditions became too precarious for the offensive operation to continue. Incident Commander, Battalion Chief Michael Castillo, coordinated a swift transition to defensive operations, with all firefighters safely withdrawing from the interior and the roof of the heavily involved structure, as multiple ladder pipes and large diameter hand lines were put into place, This dedicated effort to defend the two attached buildings on either side of the fire unit paid off, as there was no fire extension into those structures.

102 firefighters achieved full extinguishment of the fire in one hour and 49 minutes with no injuries reported. The three units in the main building suffered varying levels of damage with the central unit being most heavily affected. Woodland Hills Fire Lights the Sky by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9:54PM on November 7, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 5100 block of N Medina Rd in Woodland Hills. Firefighters arrived to find a three-story ascending hillside home with fire showing from the top floor. 66 firefighters protected nearby vegetation and homes from the blaze and extinguished the fire in 45 minutes with no reported injuries

Greater Alarm Commercial Fire in Eagle Rock by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 3:39PM on January 7, 2018 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 4537 N Eagle Rock Blvd to find a 75' x 250' vacant commercial building with heavy smoke showing. The property, surrounded by security fencing, required forcible entry to gain full access to the structure.

While truck companies made their way to the roof, interior fire attack encountered heavy smoke and heat upon entry. Minutes later, a partial roof collpase required the transition to a defensive operation. All crews exited safely and 2 1/2 handlines were put into place at exterior doors. The firefighters were able to gain an upperhand on the bulk of the fire and when all safety factors were considered, offensive operations resumed to reach the stubborn pockets of fire.

The structure, built in 1968, had a large, attached building (also vacant) which was defended from any fire damage. 98 firefighters, under the expert command of Assistant Chief Tim Ernst, fully extinguished the fire in just over one hour. Out of abundance of caution, residents from an exposed, large apartment building were evacuated but all were re-housed once knockdown was achieved with no remaining hazards.

At 2:03AM on 1 January, 2018, the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 12100 block of W Ohio Av in the Sawtelle community. 58 firefighters took only 26 mins to extinguish an outside fire that extended into a business.

Fireworks Starts Fire in Sylmar by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 7:40PM on July 4, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported vegetation fire in the 13500 block of W Borden St in Sylmar.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire burning in the yard of a single family dwelling. Crews quickly initiated a fire attack and extinguished the flames with no injuries reported.

The fire, started by the use of illegal fireworks, damaged a total of six vehicles and a tree.

Firefighters Evacuate Businesses and Residences While Fighting Downtown Blaze by Los Angeles Fire Department

DOWNTOWN - Los Angeles City Firefighters battled a Downtown structure fire, which began as a large outside rubbish fire which spread to several businesses in a row of commercial buildings, that had occupied residential units across the second floor.

Firefighters responded to the Flower District of Downtown Los Angeles at 3:12 PM on June 22, 2023, to find heavy fire involving outside storage in the rear behind a long 2-story building, with residential units over a row of commercials, with heavy fire showing. The Incident Commander called for waves of additional firefighters, and placed companies in all involved units on the first floor, second floor, roof, and outside to the rear.

The fire appeared to have originated as an exterior fire to the rear, with flames rapidly spreading inside the first floor commercial space, and threatening to burn more units horizontally. Firefighters assisted with evacuations, and performed a rapid and systematic search of all units, and halted the horizontal spread. Fortunately, no victims were trapped.

Ultimately, it took 148 firefighters one hour and thirty-five minutes to extinguish the blaze. The fire unit of origin was a venue rental business, who loaned out supplies for

weddings, and social events, therefore there was a heavy fuel load inside that fueled the fire.

As always, we mourn the loss of the approximately four commercial units downstairs and four residential units directly above suffered damaged, but remain thankful that this incident did not end up being significantly worse. Red Cross responded to assist approximately 30 residents who were displaced. Thankfully, only one person (a 28-year-old female) was transported to the hospital in fair condition, and a second (a 50-year-old male) was evaluated and declined transport (both had symptoms of smoke inhalation). Arson investigators responded to determine fire origin, per protocol.

North Hollywood Commercial Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 9PM on August 27, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 12100 block of W Victory Bl in North Hollywood.63 firefighters took just 29 minutes to extinguish the flames in a three-story commercial building. The fire was burning on the first floor and into the elevator shaft, sending smoke throughout the building. Initial reports of a person trapped inside made the interior search a high priority. Thankfully, no patients were located inside the structure and no injuries were reported.

Koreatown Structure Fire by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 6:12PM on September 19, 2019 the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 3900 block of W 1st St in Koreatown. Firefighters arrived to find a detached garage fully engulfed in flames. 40 firefighters took 23 minutes to fully extinguish the fire. A nearby utility pole was exposed to flames, but all adjacent properties were protected from the blaze. There were no reported injuries.

At 1:06PM on April 16, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to the 20100 block of W Gilmore St for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing from an attached carport which extended into the back of a single family dwelling.

44 firefighters extinguished the fire in 28 minutes and defended to two adjacent residences from damage.

Heavy Smoke Showing from South LA Home by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 11:49PM on July 25, 2023 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 8700 block of S Orchard Av.

Firefighters arrived to find a one story, single family dwelling with heavy smoke showing. Firefighters initiative an offensive attack and extinguished the fire in 10 minutes with no injuries reported.

Apartments Protected From Ensuing Blaze by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 4:04AM the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to 4659 W Fountain Ave to find a 2 story strip mall with heavy fire in one unit on the 2nd floor which was impinging on a 4 story apartment building butted up next to it. Over 100 firefighters took 51 mins to gain a knockdown and protected all 31 apartment units from any damage. No injuries reported and the cause of the fire is "undetermined, nothing suspicious in nature"

Greater Alarm Fire in Downtown LA by Los Angeles Fire Department

At 8:03PM on October 30, 2020 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 917 S San Julian Street in Downtown LA. The first arriving fire companies saw heavy smoke coming from the back of a commercial building. They located an outside fire and worked to quickly extinguish it. Despite their efforts, the fire had already extended into the adjacent one story commercial building.

Firefighters forced entry into the 10,832 square foot building (housing three businesses) and initiated an interior fire attack. They continued to work their way into the building while visibility dropped, yet the seat of the fire remained out of reach. Truck companies, on the roof of the building, conducted vertical ventilation, resulting in both fire and pressurized smoke emanating from the holes. It was determined the fire was above the interior crews, likely on a mezzanine which was inaccessible to them. The deteriorating conditions created an untenable position and the incident commander, Assistant Chief Dean Zipperman, made the decision to transition to a defensive operation.

With all firefighters out of the building and off the roof, company officers conducted an accountability report to ensure all were safe and present while preparing for master streams. Over the next 90 minutes, crews applied copious amounts of water from ladder pipes and large diameter hand lines to drown out the blaze. Pockets of fire remained out of reach due to the style of construction and once the conditions improved enough, firefighters returned to an offensive mode. An official ‘knockdown’ was declared two hours and nine minutes into the incident. Firefighters defended a second building, exposed to the fire, from any damage.

One firefighter was transported with a heat-related illness and returned to full duty a short while later. LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded and are actively investigating the cause of the fire, following protocol for an incident of this size.

Structure Fire - Northridge by Los Angeles Fire Department

NORTHRIDGE - 40 firefighters found the garage (attached) of a single-family home fully involved and extinguished the fire in 13 minutes. Initial reports of a person trapped in the fire room proved to be false after a thorough search. The fire was stopped quickly before extending into the home. No reported injuries.

At 11:33AM, Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 6600 block of N Ampere Av in North Hollywood. With heavy fire and smoke showing upon arrival, 45 firefighters gained knockdown and defended an exposed building in 25 mins. No injuries reported and two pet dogs located safely.

At 11:24 p.m. on July 25th, 2019, LAFD responded to an RV fire exposing two structures to intense heat. The flames were extinguished in 16 minutes, protecting the structures from further damage.
