First responders from across the country were in Virginia Beach for a massive structural collapse training exercise hosted by the Virginia Beach Fire Department and Virginia Task Force 2. The annual School was held at the sprawling complex of crawl spaces and staged disaster zones representing different scenarios – things first responders have seen and experienced first-hand. This course gives urban search and rescue teams a chance to practice their skills. More than 160 people took part in the hands-on training lasting for 8 days with students coming from as far as San Francisco, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware.

These are the first two "drop-in" or closure girders delivered to the project. These girders are used to close the gap between Pier 6 and Pier 5, once all the knuckle girders are in place. This busy composition of structural elements captures the underside of architect Frank Gehry's abstract fish on Barcelona's mediterranean coastline. This scene focuses on the hierarchy of the steel bracing used to support the elegant metal woven skin of the fish. The lighter steel framing stabilizes the skin, while the larger structural members support the light framing, eventually transferring all of the load into the large trusses and columns. This seemingly tangled mess of metal has a strutural order that works to stabilize this oversized city sculpture.

Two cranes will lift the girder slowly, eventually lifting it up above the knuckle girders already in place.
The leg girder closest to the camera here, has the stub girders already installed. The stubs are used to precisely support the top girder, holding the two girders in exact alignment for the knuckle girder erection.
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. Designed and Fabricated Structural Pipe Hangers with Megalug® Pipe Attachments.
These are carbon steel structural supports designed for 6", 10" and 12" ductile iron pipe. They are hot dip galvanized to protect against corrosion and will be used in conjunction with hydraulic snubbers. The hydraulic snubbers are used to protect against axial shock loading, as well as providing vertical weight support.
Each support utilizes a Megalug pipe attachment to eliminate the need for field welding. The Megalug® attachments are designed to "bite" into the sides of the pipe providing an attachment point for the flanges on the fabricated clamp.
The 6" supports are designed for a maximum vertical load of 3,770 pounds, while the 10" and 12" supports are designed for a maximum vertical load of 11,630 pounds. All of the supports are built for an overall height of 55-1/8" from the upper support steel to pipe centerline.
The crane operator (inside the cab) and the oiler (outside the cab) work as a team. Cranes require constant attention for lubrication and cleaning. The oiler also provides another set of eyes, watching when the work is in really close quarters or on the ground, watching the tracks when moving the crane in cramped work areas.
G. H. Residence was conceived less as a house, but more as an extension and outgrowth of the limestone and aquifers of the Central Texas geography. The roof structure is configured so as to create a natural basin for the collection of rainwater, not unlike the vernal pools found in the outcroppings of Enchanted Rock. These basins harness additional natural flows through the use of photovoltaic and solar hot-water panels. The water, electricity and heat which are harvested on the roof tie into an extensive climate conditioning system which utilizes water source heat pumps and radiant loops to supply both the heating and cooling for the residence. The climate system is connected to geothermal ground loops as well as pools and water features thereby establishing a system of heat exchange which minimizes reliance on electricity or gas.
The primary formal gesture of the project inserts two long native limestone walls into the site. The walls serve as the boundary demarking domesticated space with the vegetation outbound of these walls being native while the interior spaces are more lush and tropical. The program of the residence is configured along the stone walls each of which serves as the spine for the public and private wings, respectively. The offset between the main wings establish an exterior courtyard which will serve as an extended living space for much of the year. The siting of the boundary walls and building elements was informed by the presence and preservation of three mature native oaks. The house enjoys close proximity to both Emma Long Metro Park and
West Bull Creek Preserve.

The crew will now make sure it is safely in the supports and will begin all the prep work to get ready to erect this girder at the beginning of the next work day.
Once the truck is parked in the correct position, the crane lowers the beam spreader with the beam clamps. The location on the girder where it is lifted has been carefully calculated and is measured in the field.
Slowly the crane operator lifts the rigging that supports the top flange of the girder while still supporting the bottom flange.
