c1910 postcard view of State Street in Ashley, Indiana. The photographer was standing east of the Wabash Avenue intersection and facing northeast. The building at the left shows evidence of many signs having been posted, judging by the number of tacks in the wall. However, the only existing readable sign advertised HORSE SHOE, a tobacco product. There was nothing on the building to indicate how it was being used, but the 1909 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Ashley shows a doctor’s office in that building.
The sign next door clearly identified the ASHLEY POST OFFICE. There was a mail slot below the window to the left of the door and a barber’s pole at the curb. The 1909 map set shows a barbershop sharing that space with the post office. The man posing in front of the post office wasn’t identified and there were two suitcases sitting on the sidewalk in front of the post office. That brick building was still standing on State Street as of 2016. The following individuals served as Ashley postmasters in the early years of the 20th century.
Jacob W. Mintzer, appointed in 1898
Lester C Hunt, appointed in 1902
Chas H Bruce, appointed in 1914
The awning on the building east of the barbershop/post office advertised the KRIEBLE RESTAURANT. However, the 1909 map set shows another barbershop at that location. The next building to the east was vacant according to the map set and the building (with the exterior stairway) east of that was a bakery in 1909. Advertising signs on the side of the bakery included one for KEMP’S BALSAM and another for LAKE’S TEA. The stairway to the second floor looked rickety and the lower half of the railing was gone. A clothing and boots store was in the next building east when the 1909 map set was being prepared. The structure east of the clothing store was a bandstand. The map set shows it on the northwest corner at the Union Avenue intersection.
The next set of buildings was east of Union Avenue and the businesses included, from west to east, a tin ware business, grocery and crockery, electrical supplies, meat market and another bakery. Information presented in the 1909 map set suggests the building at the right edge of this scene was probably on the northeast corner at Grand Avenue.

I took this one on a bright sunny day during the 2010 Olympics.
After working out this morning I grabbed my camera and drove to town. What a busy place this mid-morning. Mild temps for a few more days or fingers crossed another week.
I got so wrapped up with trying to get rid of my duplicate images that I rather neglected to post a number of recent shots.
