Built in 1935-1936, this limestone-clad Art Deco-style bank building, designed by Val. H. Heinhold, stands on Harrison Avenue near Fairmount Avenue in Cincinnati’s South Fairmount neighborhood. The original building, consisting of the central wing, was built to house the Central Fairmount Building and Loan Company, founded in the 1880s, and featured a large front lobby and banking hall, a decorative vestibule adorned with clocks over the doors on the exterior and interior, a rear office area, a private office in the southwest corner of the main floor, a vault in the northwest corner of the main floor, two restrooms with marble stalls and hexagonal tile floors, and a basement with garage door openings on either end. The interior of the building featured extensive and ornate decorative walnut paneling, a decorative ceiling in the banking hall made up of fiber ceiling tiles arranged in an Art Deco pattern, a herringbone linoleum floor with decorative accents, brushed nickel door hardware, and half-height partitions in the main banking hall to help ensure an efficient flow of customers and business through the building. The building was modified in 1949 with the addition of two small wings on either side of the original structure, housing additional offices, a new boiler room, a second safe in the basement, an air conditioning system, and a single basement garage entrance. The original chandeliers in the banking hall were replaced with a pair of large linear fluorescent fixtures, and four original window openings were retained, and two were enlarged to allow circulation into the new wings. The interior of the additions feature walnut paneling like the original building, but with a far more streamlined and simplified design, as well as simpler nickel hardware, and tile ceilings with integrated linear fluorescent lights. The building remained in this configuration until a third and final renovation carried out between 1978 and 1980, which saw the addition of a small wing in the northwest corner of the building containing two offices and an additional stairwell, the creation of a break room in the basement, the reconfiguration of the lobby and replacement of the original banking counters, and the partitioning of the large office in the north wing added in 1949 into two smaller offices and a hallway. Shortly after the final renovation, the Central Fairmount Building and Loan Company, founded in the 1880s, was consolidated with the Gem Savings Bank of Dayton, Ohio, becoming a branch bank for Gem Savings, and only remaining open a few years in the 1980s before the branch was closed due to a lack of business and financial problems of Gem Savings, which was eventually acquired by National City Corp in 1989 due to financial insolvency and mismanagement. In 1985, the building was bought by Bill Spetz, whom ran an engineering firm out of the building from that time until about 2019, keeping the building’s features preserved and well-maintained during its time under his stewardship. The building was sold to a new owner in 2022.

Like all penguins, the Little Penguin is highly adapted for life in the sea. Its body is streamlined, its wings are modified as flippers and its feathers are densely distributed over its body. The upper parts, including the back of the Little Penguin are distinctly blue, which explains one of its alternative names (Blue Penguin) and the underbelly is white. Its bill is grey-black with a pinkish lower base, and its iris pale grey to white. One New Zealand population has broad white borders to the flippers, and considered by some as a separate species. Young penguins are bluer than adults. The Little Penguin is also known as the Fairy Penguin because of its small size.

The Little Penguin is the only species of penguin that breeds in Australia. Although the most famously occurring on Phillip Island in Victoria, dozens of colonies are scattered on islands from the NSW North Coast, south to Tasmania, and west to Carnac Island, off Fremantle. On land penguins are eaten by introduced predators and their burrows are trampled, and at sea they are susceptible to oil pollution, fish die-offs and entanglement in fishing nets. Despite this, the total population in Australia is stable at perhaps a million birds.

Recent shift to AMC enables streamlined logistics services

CAMP CASEY, SOUTH KOREA – The logisticians who look after Warrior Country’s transportation, maintenance and supply needs are now able to provide even more robust services thanks to a recent change that gives them broader, faster reach into the Army’s overall logistics network.

The U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I’s Directorate of Logistics ran the Central Issue Facility at Camp Hovey and the transportation motor pools that provide buses and vehicle maintenance in Warrior Country.

They did that as part of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, of which USAG Red Cloud and Area I is a part.

But, effective Oct. 1, all Army DOL assets shifted from IMCOM to the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is a global command that supports Army logistics worldwide.

The shift plugs in the DOL to AMC’s global logistics network.

And in Warrior Country, DOL is now part of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade Area I, said DOL director Dennis Williams.

For Warrior Country customers, that’ll mean that when one of the 403rd AFSB’s facilities in Warrior Country runs low on an item – helmets or vehicle parts – for example, they can be shipped from another facility that does have them, even one in, say, Japan, Williams said.

The transition will not pose any confusion or inconvenience for DOL customers, he said.

“For Area I it will be transparent,” he said. “The services we did yesterday are the same services that we’ll do today and tomorrow.”

The Area I DOL marked the shift to AMC with a low-key patch-and-pin ceremony Oct. 3 at Camp Casey’s Carey Fitness Center.

There, DOL’s Soldiers traded in their seven-sided IMCOM patch for the shield-shaped AMC patch, while civilians received an AMC lapel pin.

“On behalf of the Army Materiel Command I want to welcome you to the new AMC family,” Col. Michael Lopez, commander of the 403rd AFSB, said during the ceremony.

For the more than 300 DOL Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians and Korean civilians in Warrior Country, the 403rd AFSB is now their higher headquarters. But, they’re not alone. On Oct. 1, the 403rd also took command and control of all DOLs in Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

The changeover process was set in motion in March 2005 when the leadership of IMCOM and AMC decided to develop a logistics partnership to improve support to the Army and the Army’s transformation plan.

Flying fish can be seen jumping out of warm ocean waters worldwide. Their streamlined torpedo shape helps them gather enough underwater speed to break the surface, and their large, wing-like pectoral fins get them airborne.

Flying fish are thought to have evolved this remarkable gliding ability to escape predators, of which they have many. Their pursuers include mackerel, tuna, swordfish, marlin, and other larger fish. For their sustenance, flying fish feed on a variety of foods, including plankton.

There are about 40 known species of flying fish. Beyond their useful pectoral fins, all have unevenly forked tails, with the lower lobe longer than the upper lobe. Many species have enlarged pelvic fins as well and are known as four-winged flying fish.

The process of taking flight, or gliding, begins by gaining great velocity underwater, about 37 miles (60 kilometers) per hour. Angling upward, the four-winged flying fish breaks the surface and begins to taxi by rapidly beating its tail while it is still beneath the surface. It then takes to the air, sometimes reaching heights over 4 feet (1.2 meters) and gliding long distances, up to 655 feet (200 meters). Once it nears the surface again, it can flap its tail and taxi without fully returning to the water. Capable of continuing its flight in such a manner, flying fish have been recorded stretching out their flights with consecutive glides spanning distances up to 1,312 feet (400 meters).

Flying fish are attracted to light, like a number of sea creatures, and fishermen take advantage of this with substantial results. Canoes, filled with enough water to sustain fish, but not enough to allow them to propel themselves out, are affixed with a luring light at night to capture flying fish by the dozens. There is currently no protection status on these animals.
