The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is endemic to Antarctica. The male and female are similar in plumage and size, reaching 122 cm in height and weighing from 22 to 45 kg. Feathers of the head and back are black and sharply delineated from the white belly, pale-yellow breast and bright-yellow ear patches. Like all penguins it is flightless, with a streamlined body, and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine habitat. Its diet consists primarily of fish, but also includes crustaceans, such as krill, and cephalopods, such as squid. While hunting, the species can remain submerged around 20 minutes, diving to a depth of 535 m. It has several adaptations to facilitate this, including an unusually structured haemoglobin to allow it to function at low oxygen levels, solid bones to reduce barotrauma, and the ability to reduce its metabolism and shut down non-essential organ functions. The only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter, emperor penguins trek 50–120 km over the ice to breeding colonies which can contain up to several thousand individuals. 1921
Large on black canvas | My favorite shots
Location: Along a fishing-lake at Haren-Ems (Emsland) Germany.
Description: Taken this morning while I was driving somewhere near the city Haren, when I noticed a large (sport-fishing) lake on the right side of the road. Initially I wanted to take some shots of this lake together with these thick cloud formation. But when I looked at the right side along this lake, I noticed these streamlined sky that seemed like a vein of heaven. So, I mounted the camera on my Manfrotto, made some shots, with different f-stops, from a low-angled position. When I got home, I was really surprised about how the sky eventually turned out: it was exactly what I had in mind, but it wasn't quite noticeable on spot with the relatively little LCD-display and bright low-angled morning sunlight.
Exposure: 3 brackets of -2 Ev, +/-0 Ev and +2 Ev at f/8, securely mounted on a Manfrotto 190.
Technique: HDR Tone Mapping & PS color and contrast enhancements.

This is an unretouched, unmanipulated photograph. I did not "flatten" nor "squeeze" it in any way. Hahaha! When I first saw it as I "chimped" at the LCD display in the field, I thought it was just a "preview" distortion. Imagine my surprise when I checked it out in my laptop monitor and saw that it was, indeed, FLAT! :D
An addition to my new ”Feathered Friends, In Flight” set,
which I hope you will check out. :D

The first streamlined diesel-electric locomotive in the world on display at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
A streamlined long-winged falcon. Note grey upper-parts with plain tail, boldly streaked underparts with rusty leggings and vent. Swift-like; flight more graceful and aerodynamic than Eurasian Kestrel.
Compare with larger, stockier, shorter-tailed Peregrine Falcon. Favours open woodland, heathland, and farmland with stands of trees; often hunts over nearby water bodies and marshes.
Hunts in the air, catching dragonflies, swallows, and other birds, which it sometimes eats on the wing.

GM10, with GM22 at the rear, work the ARTC AK inspection carriages through Shiels Hill, heading to Buxton on the old Picton to Mittagong Loop Line, now operated by the NSW Rail Museum.
The ARTC AK Inspection carriages are three former Brisbane Limited FAM sleeping carriages, converted into track recording vehicles that house various measuring equipment, kitchen and sleeping accommodation.
The AK carriages run all across the standard gauge network in Australia, with this being their first visit since 2016 on the THNSW Loop Line. It is hoped that on their next visit, the line will be open to Colo Vale.
GM10 is the oldest commercially operating diesel locomotive in Australia and will celebrate 72 years of service in June 2024.

Medium sized Australian native bird with yellow eyes, curved beak and white feather tips. Currawongs are three species of medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the genus Strepera in the family Artamidae native to Australia. These are the grey currawong (Strepera versicolor), pied currawong (S. graculina), and black currawong (S. fuliginosa). The common name comes from the call of the familiar pied currawong of eastern Australia and is onomatopoeic. They were formerly known as crow-shrikes or bell-magpies. Despite their resemblance to crows and ravens, they are only distantly related to the corvidae, instead belonging to an Afro-Asian radiation of birds of superfamily Malaconotoidea. They are not as terrestrial as the magpie and have shorter legs. They are omnivorous, foraging in foliage, on tree trunks and limbs, and on the ground, taking insects and larvae (often dug out from under the bark of trees), fruit, and the nestlings of other birds. They are distinguishable from magpies and crows by their comical flight style in amongst foliage, appearing to almost fall about from branch to branch as if they were inept flyers. 15109

Another decade ago photo (2025 -> 2015). Another "Railfan Weekend" photo relating to NP 3617... which is on the other end of this train. (Look closely).
At the time, NP 3617 wasn't yet operational, so why not use a beautiful Soo Line FP7 to move the photo train around?
Soo 2500 was shoving hard moving the train to Palmers, the next photo location. Northern Pacific observation car "Rainier Club" and NP Caboose 1311 are along for the ride with the CN ore jennies.
Maybe someday there will be more railfan weekends... I have some ideas...

Heber Valley Railroad 2936 is a restored vintage 56-seat passenger coach originally built by the Budd Company for the New York Central. The car was later converted to a 28-seat parlor car for use on Chessie steam specials, and later on the Morristown & Erie.
The car was recently repainted in D&RGW inspired livery. All stainless steel surfaces were restored and polished by hand. The car will offer premium seating on a high-end streamlined passenger train, with an option for cheese and wine tasting.

Cormorants fly carrying a considerable amount of added weight from their last dive and this Little Cormorant is no exception. Unlike most waterbirds, their plumage allows water to penetrate the outer feathers, reducing buoyancy and improving underwater control while hunting.
This effect persists for several seconds after takeoff, turning a benefit underwater into a cost in the air. During this brief phase of flight right after takeoff, the soaked neck and body feathers retain water, increasing mass and aerodynamic drag.
What is visible here is not just the act of flight right after leaving the water, but also the residual cost of a dive optimized feather structure with water, being carried into the air.

Steam Rotary Snow Plow
UP 900075 is a steam-powered rotary snow plow. It is effectively a giant snow blower, with its steam engine – housed entirely within the streamlined car body for easier maintenance in winter conditions – powering a large blade at the front that throws snow to the side of the tracks. It is not self-propelled and was designed to be pushed by a locomotive. Diesel-powered rotary snow plows are still employed by railroads but the last steam-powered rotary plow was retired in the 1970s.

Amtrak 945
AEM-7 main line passenger locomotive
Amtrak 945 is an 11,000 volt electric passenger locomotive built in LaGrange, Illinois. It is the fastest locomotive at IRM. It was designed for a maximum speed of 125mph, which it would reach in service on the Northeast Corridor between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. It was retired in 2018 and acquired by IRM, where it is preserved as a static display.

Union Pacific 18
D-E Turbine A Unit 8500 GTEL
Union Pacific 18 is an example of the most powerful locomotive ever built in America. Rated at 10,000hp, it consists of the cab unit; the main power unit containing a turbine engine, similar to a jet engine, numbered 18B; and a tender to carry fuel for the turbine. The railroad designed these locomotives specifically to pull freight trains between Omaha, Nebraska and Ogden, Utah and 18 is one of only two in preservation. Their poor fuel economy and high maintenance costs of the turbine led to their retirement in the late 1960s.
The above texts all come from the IRM website.
National Train Day was a marketing thing that Amtrak came up with. They had some interesting displays of equipment at Union Station in Chicago. They quit it because they didn't have the budget for it. But, as usual, things created by the government never truly fade away. 😜
Here are some pictures I took at Union Station in 2010.

A slim Coyote in his streamlined summer coat pauses to stretch and yawn, unconcerned about the presence of humans. Three friends were with me for this dawn outing, in two vehicles; Coyote stopped to assess us for a few moments, then went about his business. In the background, some old fencing, left over from the ranching days. Acquisition of ranch lands for a new national park on the Saskatchewan prairie began in the early 1980s; that process continues on a willing buyer, willing seller basis, and is now 80% complete.
When I first began visiting the area, in 1989, a close encounter such as this with a Coyote was unthinkable - the animals were too wary. By now, successive generations have lived out their lives within park boundaries, subsisting on natural prey rather than supplementing it with livestock; consequently they have been left in peace and have lost some of their fear of humans. The result: excellent photo ops for us wildlife photographers. However, all predators tend to be elusive, and I still have to be persistent to get close shots like this.
Encounters are random. I go out there often. I was out at 4:30 this morning; didn't see anything of note (but I was shooting landscapes and some time lapse video, not really looking for wildlife). A large part of the adventure of wildlife photography is not knowing what surprise lies around the next bend in the road or over the crest of the next hill. Yes, we have hills!

A yardang is a streamlined protuberance carved from bedrock or any consolidated or semiconsolidated material by the dual action of wind abrasion by dust and sand, and deflation which is the removal of loose material by wind turbulence. Yardangs become elongated features typically three or more times longer than wide, and when viewed from above, resemble the hull of a boat. Facing the wind is a steep, blunt face that gradually gets lower and narrower toward the lee end.[2] Yardangs are formed by wind erosion, typically of an originally flat surface formed from areas of harder and softer material. The soft material is eroded and removed by the wind, and the harder material remains. The resulting pattern of yardangs is therefore a combination of the original rock distribution, and the fluid mechanics of the air flow and resulting pattern of erosion.
