A streamlined locomotive , built in 1938, one of the most powerful steam locomotives ever to run on Britain's railways. It regurarly ran at speeds in excess of 90 mph / 145 km ph, pulling Anglo-Scottish expresses on the West Coast main line.

The fireman had to feed at least 1 ton of coal into its firebox every hour, that meant shifting at least 6 tons of coal on an average journey. Duchess of Hamilton was withdrawn from service in 1964, currently in National Railway Museum, York.

1936 Bugatti Type 57 S (low chassis) with the classic 'French Sweep' paint job.

The Atalante body style was an interpretation of the 1935 Aérolithe Coupe, essentially a prototype that reached very limited production in 1936 as the Type 57 Atlantic. This amazing car used riveted panels to form a streamlined sports coupe.

As majestic and unusual as the Atlantic was, it wasn’t suitable for series production with its high set doors, fussy construction and split front window. The design was revised into the Atalante which included the Aérolithe’s teardrop shape, but with a flat windshield, a separate trunk area with recessed spare-tire and full-size doors that retained the signature kidney-bean windows.

On the 57S Atalante, Jean used a two-tone paint scheme that accentuated the use of his French curve on the side of the car. Typically, the car was black with an intense highlight color. On some cars, this accent dash extended around the entire cabin.

The basis for this remarkable car was Bugatti’s top-of-the-line Type 57S chassis. These were the same type that Jean-Pierre Wimille and Robert Benoist drove to win the 1937 24 Hours of Le Mans. It had a much lower chassis than the preceding Type 57 and also used complex de Ram shock absorbers. In many ways this was the ultimate Bugatti since no logical successor was ever produced. Some cars came with fitted superchargers, while others were retrofitted with them.

To maintain exclusivity, no two of the Type 57S Atalantes were the same. In detail, each was distinct and some major differences were introduced. For instance, two were made as Roll-Back Coupes with reclining soft-tops. Some of the first had independent headlights while others were sculpted into the body. Most featured skirted rear arches and wire wheels or polished aluminum hubcaps. Some of the more dramatic cars feature lengthened rear fenders. Essentially, where anyone tries to make a rule there is usually an exception.

With its streamlined styling and low-slung chassis, the Bugatti Type 57S Atalante was designed by Jean Bugatti as a 2-seater sports coupe, which soon became the rarest of the four body styles offered by the Bugatti factory. This Type 57S, the fifth Atalante produced one of 15 surviving, is known as the 'Casablanca' car. This car was ordered new by Miss Luci Vogt, the 25-year-old heiress to a potash mining fortune. Then, in 1957, it was purchased by Margaret Walker, an American stationed at the Consulate in Casablanca. She brought the car to the United States in 1960 and kept it for another ten years.

The eastern great egret (Ardea alba modesta), a white heron in the genus Ardea, is usually considered a subspecies of the great egret (A. alba). In New Zealand it is known as the white heron or by its Māori name kōtuku. Measuring 83–103 cm in length and weighing 0.7–1.2 kg, the eastern great egret is a large heron with all-white plumage. Its bill is black in the breeding season and yellow at other times, and its long legs are red or black. The colours of the bare parts of the face change to green during the breeding season. The breeding plumage is also marked by long neck plumes and a green facial area. The eastern great egret can be distinguished from other white egrets and herons in Asia and Australia by its very long neck, one and a half times as long as its own body. The eastern great egret has a wide distribution throughout Asia and Oceania, with breeding populations in Australia, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, India, Indochina, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Russia (north-eastern), Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The egret breeds across Australia but only rarely in the southwest of the continent or dry interior. The largest colonies within Australia are in the Top End and Channel Country, which can number several thousand pairs. Colonies in the southeast of Australia can number several hundred pairs. The bird is an uncommon autumn and winter visitor to Tasmania. The diet includes vertebrates such as fish, frogs, small reptiles, small birds and rodents, and invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, and molluscs. The eastern great egret hunts by wading or standing still in shallow water and spearing prey with its bill. The eastern great egret often breeds in colonies with other herons, egrets, cormorants, spoonbills and ibises. One brood is raised a year, although the breeding season varies within Australia. In the north of the country it is in March to May, in southern and central Queensland December and January, and October to December in the south. Located atop trees at a height of 20 m or more, the nest is a flat wide platform of dry branches and sticks with a shallow basin for eggs and young. The clutch consists of anywhere from two to six pale blue-green eggs, with three or four being the usual number. They are oval in shape and measure 52 x 36 mm. The subspecies is protected in Australia. 49108

The southern royal albatross or toroa, (Diomedea epomophora) is a large seabird from the albatross family. It has the third largest wingspan of living birds. At an average wingspan of above 3 m (9.8 ft), it is one of the two largest species of albatross, together with the wandering albatross. Recent studies indicate that the southern royal albatross may, on average, be somewhat larger than the wandering albatross in mass and have a similar wingspan, although other sources indicate roughly similar size for the two species and the wandering species may have a larger average (and maximum) wingspan in some colonies.

Most of the royal albatross population is found between 30° S and 45° S. The majority of the world's population of southern royal albatrosses nest on the rat-free subantarctic Campbell Island, around 8,200 to 8,600 pairs. There are smaller colonies on Adams Island and Auckland Island in the Auckland Islands, 20 pairs combined, and 69 pairs on Enderby Island and some sanfordi × epomophora hybrids at the northern royal albatross colony on the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand. They range along the southern oceans concentrating on the west and east coast of southern South America, and also in the waters surrounding New Zealand. R_28387

This is an unretouched, unmanipulated photograph. I did not "flatten" nor "squeeze" it in any way. Hahaha! When I first saw it as I "chimped" at the LCD display in the field, I thought it was just a "preview" distortion. Imagine my surprise when I checked it out in my laptop monitor and saw that it was, indeed, FLAT! :D

The royal tern (Thalasseus maximus) is a seabird in the tern family Sternidae.

The royal tern lives on the coast and is only found near salt water. They tend to feed near the shore, close to the beach or in backwater bays. The royal tern's conservation status is listed as least concern.

The royal tern belongs to the class Aves and the order Charadriiformes. Charadriiformes are mainly seabirds of small to medium-large size. The royal tern is also in the family Sternidae because of its white plumage, black cap on its head, long bill, webbed feet, and bodies that are more streamlined than those of gulls.

Large on black canvas | My favorite shots

Location: Along a fishing-lake at Haren-Ems (Emsland) Germany.

Description: Taken this morning while I was driving somewhere near the city Haren, when I noticed a large (sport-fishing) lake on the right side of the road. Initially I wanted to take some shots of this lake together with these thick cloud formation. But when I looked at the right side along this lake, I noticed these streamlined sky that seemed like a vein of heaven. So, I mounted the camera on my Manfrotto, made some shots, with different f-stops, from a low-angled position. When I got home, I was really surprised about how the sky eventually turned out: it was exactly what I had in mind, but it wasn't quite noticeable on spot with the relatively little LCD-display and bright low-angled morning sunlight.

Exposure: 3 brackets of -2 Ev, +/-0 Ev and +2 Ev at f/8, securely mounted on a Manfrotto 190.

Technique: HDR Tone Mapping & PS color and contrast enhancements.

The red-breasted merganser is a medium-sized duck and a member of a group called the 'sawbills' because of their long, narrow bills with saw-like 'teeth' which are good for gripping fish. A long, streamlined bird, it is perfectly shaped for swimming after fish. red-breasted mergansers are gregarious birds, forming flocks of hundreds in winter.

This amazing Rod began life as a 1939 V-12 Lincoln Zephyr, and IMHO is one of the all time best rod conversions. Sleek and sensuous it is a dominant presence in any show or collection. This image is from the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, Ca.

In late 1935, Edsel Ford conceived the Zephyr as a model, down from the very expensive Lincoln K series (that competed with Packard, Cadillac etc, for the $$ of the very wealthy) and aimed at he Chrysler Airstream, Cadillac LaSalle, and the Packard One-Twenty, who had successfully tapped into the upper middle class market. At that time Ford had only the Ford brand for the Hoi-Paloi and the Lincoln for the very wealthy, and the competition had long tapped into the various levels between the two extremes. It would be a few years before Edsel introduced the Mercury.

As a 'streamlined' design the Lincoln-Zephyr actually had a lower drag coefficient than the Airflow, The Zephyr was powered by a small 75° V12 engine developed from Ford's Flathead V8 and unrelated to the larger K-series Lincoln V12 engines. The valve-in-block flathead engine was quite compact, allowing a low hood. Excepting for some Ford trucks, the Zephyr was the first Ford product to have an all-steel roof. With the axing of the larger K series Lincolns in 1940, the Zephyr was the basis for the post-war Lincolns with the Zephyr name not surviving the war.

What a joy to visit an African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus) colony on Boulder’s Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, on this day in 2017.

The African penguin, also known as the Cape penguin, and Jackass penguin, so named because of its loud donkey-like bray, is a species of penguin confined to southern African waters. Like all penguins, it is flightless, with a streamlined body, and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine habitat.

The Jackass penguin is a pursuit diver who feeds primarily on fish and squid. Once extremely numerous, their number is declining rapidly due to a combination of several threats and is now classified as endangered. It is a charismatic species and popular with tourists.

“The White Arrow”, “The Dove of the Orient”, “The Ship of Maharajahs”... these were some of the epithets which were given to the motorship Victoria of the Lloyd Triestino. At the end of the 'Twenties, the company's technical office was faced with a complex but obvious problem: the design of a new liner which would replace the two already obsolete vessels Helouan and Vienna, born before the First World War which, with the exception of those wartime years, had served with dignity on the express route between Italy and Alexandria in Egypt.

The higher speeds obtainable with the latest generation of propulsion machinery, the competition posed by the Società Italiana di Servizi Marittimi (SITMAR) of Genoa which was running its two most recent steamships, Esperia and Ausonia, on the same route, a worrying contraction in traffic and, finally, the restructuring of the Lloyd Triestino by Lloyd Sabaudo, persuaded the company to order just a single ship; the possibility of a sister ship would have to wait for more favourable economic times. Following a favourable experience with some diesel-driven combi-ships, it was decided that the new flagship should be a motor vessel: four powerful Sulzer diesels, built at the famous Fabbrica Macchine Sant'Andrea of Trieste, were connected directly to the same number of propellers with the intention of giving the ship a service speed of 20 knots.

The Victoria (a name chosen after consideration had been given to Alessandrina and Cleopatra) was also one of the very first passenger ships in the World built to the new standards of Safety of Life At Sea (SOLAS 1929); in addition to a cellular double bottom which extended from the fore to the stern peak, she was divided into eleven watertight compartments with the engine room in the middle section and the forward and aft sections devoted to cargo. There was also a garage for cars accessible over a ramp connected to the quay. Despite being much smaller than the great transatlantic liners, the Victoria attracted international attention for several reasons: apart from her speed, she had a particularly graceful and streamlined appearance, her interiors were in the Modern style and the first class main lounge was fitted with air-conditioning: she was indeed the first passenger ship in the World to have this amenity thanks to a plant designed by the Carrier company of America and built in England.

For more information please visit www.italianliners.com/victoria-en

The ship was the property of Lloyd Triestino, originally founded as Österreichischer Lloyd, which is a shipping company with its head office in Trieste, Italy, and run by Evergreen Marine Corporation.

It was founded as "Österreichischer Lloyd" (or "Austrian Lloyd") in 1836 and became one of the world's biggest shipping companies by managing most oversea trade and passenger travel of Austria-Hungary until 1918. The Austrian Lloyd was running regular services from Trieste to the Near East, India, China and the Far East, Brazil, the USA and Northern Europe. It also was one of the first to use steam ships.

The company's name was changed to "Lloyd Triestino" in 1919, when Trieste became a part of Italy. At this time, the company also faced major restructuring in order to recover losses incurred during World War I. By the end of the 1930s, Lloyd Triestino, with its offshoot Marittima Italiana, was once again a major world shipping power, owning a fleet of 85 vessels with 17 services to east Africa, southern Africa, Asia, and Australia.[2] The company was once again crippled by the devastation of World War II in the 1940s. During the War, Lloyd Triestino lost 68 ships and 1,000 sailors. At the end, they were reduced to a fleet of just 5 ships and were once again faced with a massive recovery operation. By 1956, the Lloyd Triestino fleet had grown to 31 ships.

Lloyd Triestino entered into a partnership with Taiwanese shipping giant, Evergreen Marine, Corp., in 1993.[3] This successful partnership has grown over the years, and now also includes Evergreen's British based line, Hatsu Marine Ltd., which was created in 2000.

On March 1, 2006, Lloyd Triestino's name officially changed to Italia Marittima. Ship names are gradually being changed from the prefix "LT" to "Ital" to reflect this change (e.g. LT Cortesia and Ital Contessa).

A slim Coyote in his streamlined summer coat pauses to stretch and yawn, unconcerned about the presence of humans. Three friends were with me for this dawn outing, in two vehicles; Coyote stopped to assess us for a few moments, then went about his business. In the background, some old fencing, left over from the ranching days. Acquisition of ranch lands for a new national park on the Saskatchewan prairie began in the early 1980s; that process continues on a willing buyer, willing seller basis, and is now 80% complete.

When I first began visiting the area, in 1989, a close encounter such as this with a Coyote was unthinkable - the animals were too wary. By now, successive generations have lived out their lives within park boundaries, subsisting on natural prey rather than supplementing it with livestock; consequently they have been left in peace and have lost some of their fear of humans. The result: excellent photo ops for us wildlife photographers. However, all predators tend to be elusive, and I still have to be persistent to get close shots like this.

Encounters are random. I go out there often. I was out at 4:30 this morning; didn't see anything of note (but I was shooting landscapes and some time lapse video, not really looking for wildlife). A large part of the adventure of wildlife photography is not knowing what surprise lies around the next bend in the road or over the crest of the next hill. Yes, we have hills!
