Armoy, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland.

Armoy was an important location in the ancient, Scottish/Irish territory of Dalriada and according to the 9th century Tripartite Life of St. Patrick, a church was founded here in the 5th century by Patrick's disciple Bishop Olcan, a relative of the Dalriada Kings. A1997 excavation also found evidence of a later, medieval church beneath the present church.

The Round Tower was built as a freestanding bell tower in the 11th or 12 th century. 800 years later, after the upper part of the structure had been rebilt, it was used as a modern belfry for the current parish church. After a new bell tower was built inside the church in 1869, it again fell out of use. The original height of the tower is unknown; perhaps as much as 6m taller than its present 10.8m. The door is unusually tall and narrow. The door sill is only 1.6m off the ground, but it would have been higher before burials raised the level of the ground. An 1843 excavation of the tower by Edmund Getty uncovered a skull, which he believed to be the head of a chieftain killed in battle. In the year 200, the Environment and Heritage Service (now NI Environment Agency) conserved the tower; they removed some rough cobbled repairs to the door frame and replaced them with cut stone.

The present church was begun in 1820. In 1846 a new chancel with tower and spire was added. In 1997 the building was renovated with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and during that work a small excavation was undertaken. During this, the feet of a medieval leper were found; he must have been well respected to merit burial inside the church.

The mountain to the right of the church is Knocklayd (514m).
