Early season storms here in Nebraska are simply surreal. The epic beauty that surpasses the sunset's ability to crest its light against the ominous position of this storm that evening.

Sunset cresting into twilight with a huge anvil (Cumulonimbus Incus) approaching from the northwest into South Central Nebraska.

I had way over colorized saturated other things to this original set of images. So I went back & took the raw images back to their original color templates & remastered them back to the original color specs of the origin image.

I only had a few of these published when I posted them back in 2017. Here is the entire set reworked!

These are truly My Best Lightning Captures to date!

An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...

I was that Lucky Gut that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence.. lol

Dangerous night for stormchasers out there. Fast growth of this nocturnal storm, discrete green hailcore and several multiple bolts and bolts from the blue (like this one here that originated from behind). The sound, well, you can imagine it... explosive! One can observe the rain drops in the air as well.

Am I the only one who hopes for a tornado when driving in weather like this? Taking a picture of a tornado is at the top of my photo bucket list.

Lightning bolts are simply amazing! I was lucky enough that hundreds of them filled the sky tonight... I should have gone to bed a long time ago, but a chance like this is hard to pass just because I'm going to work early :)

Danish tv-station 'TV 2' called me and wanted some info about my photo. Turns out they have chosen it as weather photo of the week! They're using it in weather reports and on both their website and Facebook pages. Overwhelming!

I'm humbled by all the views, faves and kind words here on Flickr as well! Thank you all! I will try to visit all of your photostreams eventually, but it might take me a while :)

Batten down the hatches, the Seatruck "Clipper Point " from Liverpool on its final leg towards Dublin Port, the right side of the breakwater along the Great South Wall tames the wild Irish Sea.

The end of the stormchase of June 18th had a nice surprise for us: a beautiful well structured storm with distinct updraft and downdraft at sunset.

The colors of the clouds and landscape were amazing.....

I Seriously, wasn't going to go out this night... Had a weeks worth of hell, and I really just wanted to do was get off work and go home. I was tired, I was cranky, it was the first weekend I've had off in a Month...

As soon as I pulled into the driveway @home, I could hear the weather radio going off and my storm capturing sensation came over me. Listening to the bullitins coming over the radio and I Freaked!. The storms were closer than I had thought. NWS just put warnings for Northern Buffalo County for super fast development of strong to potentially super severe, with large hail, and possible Tornadoes.

Photography Chance of a lifetime... Even though someone could cast me as a member of the Walking Dead....I was a trooper and I didn't wimp out! Luckily I had the my camera on the charger... Grabbed all my equipment & I hauled A** North... 20 mins later I found myself in the perfect spot, under the perfect conditions!

Cresting over northern Buffalo County, ready to cross between Pleasanton & Ravenna Nebraska, this cell was rapidly building and already had tornado warning on it. Incredible CG lightning in front of the storm cell was just to good to capture, with lighting firing off every few seconds.

Got off work late this night... and I was already tired from the night before. Severe storms came in about 3:30am and of course I wouldn't miss it for the world. Even if I had work @ 8am. Believe me when I say I was beet and tired just off a 10 hour shift. Though I'm a trooper when it comes to my dedication for severe storm photography I make every storm count. I did with this one!

With that being said this was a non severe storm that came into town about 10:30pm that evening. Super Slow mover only about 10mph moving due east. Shooting off incredible displays of forked cloud to cloud lightning. Especially when it moved right overhead! Probably the best display of cloud to cloud lighting of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures in the set of images.

August 11, 2016 - Hwy 136 East of Guide Rock Nebraska, US

Reminiscing, I haven't spent this many times in this location in years past. Its been the 2016 hot spot for severe storms to cross over from northern Kansas into south central Nebraska in 2016. Again I was there to capture these severe weather moments.

Its mid August and its late season for severe storms. We are in a drought and any rain helps as we get closer to harvest time. This was a beast storm. HP all the way, and I didn't get many captures from this storm but what I did get was something special.

I was just east of Guide Rock Nebraska and I was eastbound on Hwy 136. I had to move to the east as this storm cell was merging with another from the south and it was picking up steam. It was moving slow around 15 mph to the northeast, but it really picked up steam as it approached fast from the southwest.

Not very safe to take snaps while driving, but I couldn't stop due to the intense bands of rains obscuring my line of sight to the southwest. It was coming down so hard I had barley enough time to get back in front of these building cells

Almost late June 2020, and the severe weather season has been just down right horrible for anything of photographic value this year. I mean this when I say Chase Locally. Due to Health issues, Truck maintenance issues, Equipment Issues, Camera Issues... With all that has been going on in my life, I've had to pick my chasing days and nights carefully this year. To be 100% Honest... I'm just happy I get to chase! Never let bad things set you back when the opportunity presents itself. That's my motto!

Luckily I had all my gear ready to go when when had strong severe thunderstorms develop in north central Nebraska and they were cresting southward down to south central Nebraska. My home turf.

This time of year is when everything changes weather wise here in south central Nebraska. Monsoons down in the southwest part of the US are firing and that usually means for us no storms. Not in 2020. Even though we had a late start to severe weather season here... mother nature hasn't let me down so far. She has remained active in my neck of the woods.

All the storms this day were outflow boundary generated storms. Meaning no tornadoes this day. Though I did capture 1 funnel, you'll see this in the video. Though with outflow dominate storms shelf clouds form and they can be more than picturesque. Its what I was hunting for this day! Oh did I get some and then some!

I had a few hours left before I had to be at work. Sun was setting and I made my choice to follow this storm cell north... or should I say catch up to this storm again. It had significantly gained speed & strength, and I was no longer in good position for storm pics.

I had to back track to Lexington, then north on Hwy 283. Stopping briefly, capture these incredible mammatus clouds forming in front of the storm. I was under the base of this developing cell and it was producing some incredible Nebraska Skyscapes!

This set of images is what I live for... Those epic moments when you finally hunted/found what your looking for. It does take a lot of patience to storm chase. The waiting, the planning, the doing. But the rewards at the end are priceless. My antlers on the wall.

Now for some storm chasers... the Holy Grail of Storm chasing is a Tornado. But not for me. It is events like this that give the full definition of Storm Chasing. It really what storm chasing Eye Candy is all about! It is the "Why" or the understanding of why I do this!

28 Mai 2023

We had to pack up and move south via Hwy 283 South then Head due east of Hwy 89. This route takes us though Beaver City, Orleans, and eventually just north of Alma Nebraska.

Now just north of Alma Nebraska...

We didn't allow us much time to find a suitable spot for us to the base of the storm. A few things to note here.

When we chase, SAFETY is the number 1 thing that I stress to the individuals that chase with me. I have to practice what I preach.

We have to find a safe spot to pull off and get the pics, vids Once we make this choice to pull off when always include a EXIT plan before we stop. (Chasing for all these years, I've learned a very valuable lesson. Never stop unless you have an open an safe exit area when chasing severe weather

We had limited time when we stopped. Storm was approaching fast from the southwest. Where we stopped I wasn't considering how high the corn here in Nebraska in late August. We didn't get a choice to move. It was now or never. So we stopped & set up fast and got with I could with 4k @ ground level.

It was our best structure of severe weather 2021. Defined Meso... Eye Candy Structure.... What more could we ask for!

Our last night in southern Arizona is a night I will remember forever. It was our 5th night of storm chasing. The storms and lightning displays were good to great the previous 4 nights, but this night looked like a bust. After a beautiful sunset, a few rain showers had an occasional flash of lightning but that was it. We were east of Marana, Arizona (north of Tucson), and I had my camera pointed toward a light shower I could barely see in the distance to our south. After an hour of photographing the sky and wishing something would happen, I admitted to myself that it was over. I said a little prayer thanking God for the trip, the storms, and safety. Then I prepared to pack up my camera equipment. Seconds later, a flash, then another, and another. It turns out the heavens weren't done, they were about to put on the best grand finale I could imagine.

There was one storm in the southern part of the state and I had the best vantage point possible. Half of the lightning was striking outside of the rain. My side of the storm is where the "clear air strikes" were located and there were hundreds of bolts. I was fortunate to see it from the very start. At one point, a storm chaser raced down the dirt road I was at and stopped right in front of me and my camera. I could see him pulling up the radar on his phone before he drove down the road a little more. I was frustrated at first because he raced right into my photographs and stopped there. However, it really tells the perfect story. This was the destination in southern Arizona on August 10, 2023 for all of the monsoon chasers. They were racing to see this incredible beast before it weakened over the Catalina Mountains.

This image does not capture everything that happened. It is a composite (stacked image) showing 11 minutes of action around 8:30pm local time. There were 30 images and 30 flashes of lightning captured, but most flashes of lightning had 2 to 5 bolts in it each that touched the ground. There are a total of 83 cloud-to-ground bolts of lightning in this image...or in other words, about 1 bolt of lightning every 8 seconds! It was an incredible night, and hopefully, this image tells the story.

It was the reason why I got into storm photography. It has taken years of practice to capture it without a lightning trigger. Patients is the Key. But when it happens you have to be ready. It doesn't stay around for very long.

Had the equipment locked and stocked. Knew the storm was coming and wala... It took til August 2021 to do but finally some incredibly good and wicked lightning!

This is NOT 6 Tornadoes... it is the Genesis of 1 Tornado Overlapped or Stacked...

Its been a few weeks of no storms in south central Nebraska, we decided to head west for a fun filled afternoon of severe weather! A moderate risk day with PDS warnings on the supercells that we were chasing that afternoon.

We knew where we wanted to chase and had planned it out perfectly. From Kearney to Scottsbluff NE. From Scottsbluff to Torrington Wy, and then Hwy 85 South. We ended up parked right under a 4g cell tower, close to the Hwy 85 & junction 216 with time to spare. Perfect position, perfect light, and we had perfect cell signal to stream this event live.

Now the official report says this is an E-F0 Tornado. It only lasted about 4 4 1/2 minuets. Approximate path length was 2.8 miles, and max width was 80 yards. It was the first of the day to touchdown in Wyoming.
