The legs of the stool are through tenons that are wedged into the seat. To save time it's important to size the tenons to the chisel you plan to chop the mortise with, in this case my 3/4 chisel. Lay the chisel over the tenon location and scribe the lines. (I always mark the waste with X's, that helps keep you from making a stupid mistake late when you are tired and in a hurry.)
Cut down to the line with a fine rip saw, leaving about a 1/16th of an inch on the waste side. It is easy to pare the tenon down to perfect width with a chisel.
Shawn made a wooden stool for my 1.5 year old neice River. Years ago when Shawn was about 1.5, his uncle Jerry made him one :)

An old step stool I found in a house that had been half crushed by a land slide in the Columbia River Gorge.

This is at the Bill Moore Tennis Center at Georgia Tech.
