...I will never be able to resist taking yet more photographs of Pip on his sofa. (I have no idea why he looks so anxious this morning. He is certainly used to having his photograph taken.)

"August: Learning to say Basel Cell Carcinoma, Home Barbering..." by Bobby Spillman.

Figurative windows have been removed (and hopefully any important objects) but much of the stained glass in this church was not figurative. The lack of figurative glass is probably a reflection of the economics of the original parishioners.

The non figurative glass was probably perceived by the boys at the archdiocese as being of little or no value. Anyone who has ever been to an antique shop or salvage yard knows differently. The up side of this is whoever gets the contract to tear down the building can turn a fast buck on the remaining 19th century glass.

As you can see the building is open to the elements and an easy mark for vandals hopefully some of the glass will survive the archdiocese not so benign neglect.

Lawfords Gate St Judes crowd watching bonfire in Gloucester Lane

Looking into Pennywell Road from Lawford's Gate, Sunday 3rd August 1975. Demolition seems to be taking place on the right, but I seem to remember that the industrial building, though derelict, remained standing for a while afterwards. I wonder what it was. Those curious vents on the roof look as though they might be associated with some sort of drying process. Each floor has one window larger than its fellows ...for hoisting materials up from ground level I suppose. The forklift truck ...essentially a hoist that can be moved from place to place... made such arrangements obsolete.

St Jude's, Revd. Emily Kolltveit

The area around the tabernacle is transformed the week before Christmas into this fantastic Nativity Scene. You can see it here before Christmas.

Our pastor, Father Tom, is a man of many talents. He created this scene soon after coming to St. Jude. He painted the back drops, made the landscape and structuress, he even fabricated the molds to make the individual tiles in the roofs of the inn and stable. He asked each family to bring a stone that has been incoroporated into the display. There is a path that leads from the manger, winds along the right hand side of the scene and leads to Calvary which is drawn on the back drop to the right of the tabernacle. On the feast of the Epiphany the tabernacle lamp becomes the star leading the Magi to the infant Jesus.

The Crown Tavern in Lawford's Gate, St Judes, Bristol. Two doors up is a derelict property with painted lettering proclaiming it once to have been Fursman's Sauce Works. Beyond is the Pennywell Road turning.

Taken Sunday 3rd August 1975, on a day of 90° heat during that record-breaking summer ...promptly eclipsed in people's memories by its even more torrid successor.

I stopped in at a local Chili's Bar & Grill for dinner last night. I discovered they are donating all of their profits on Monday, September 27 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Most restaurants offer 10% of the proceeds to a charity on a specific day for the people who bring in a flyer or coupon. That is not what this fundraiser is all about.

Chili's is donating all the profits from everyone who does business with them that day. Mark your calendar now.

Go to www.createapepper.com for more details about the fundraiser and the ways you can participate.

The lighting was very challenging, but I was happy with the way a few of these turned out.
