8 mm adult. Inadvertently collected with Ilex verticillata berries. Common in eastern US. Well off ground in winterberry thicket beside five-acre marsh/maple swamp, Milton, MA 11/19/09
I was taking pictures out the window when this bug came flying in, crashed into the glass, landed on its back, turned itself around, walked to the edge, waited some time to build confidence, and then jumped and flew away.
The pink background is a very blurry brick wall.
Now why in the World do they call it a shield bug...? hmmm... ;-)
More critters found around the yard. These were on my columbines when I went to collect seeds. I'm pretty certain they are stink bug nymphs.
stinkbug. 2/23那天，和醫生走到我家附近的公車站牌時，看到了很多紅紅的蟲，我們想，這應該不是傳說中的紅火蟻，因為螞蟻就是螞蟻，不可能有這麼大隻的。後來我回家上網查資料，感覺這像是半翅目的椿象。今天電視新聞居然有報導，於是我查了一下新聞資料，果然，這是近來聚集在台灣欒樹下的紅姬緣椿象。
Pentatomidae - Podisus nymph eating bumblebee. Some stinkbugs eat plants and can be major crop pests while others are predatory. The predatory species clearly have an effective venom.
As far as things to drive you completely buggy go, trying to ID shield bugs is proving difficult to beat. Mostly because their isn't that much variety in their shape, and the problem only becomes worse when you're trying to ID them from Nymphs.
Might be Dictyotus or Paradictyotus judging by the broad, cleft, frons, and the pattern on the exposed wings.
