This exact replica of the screwpile lighthouse that stood in the Chesapeake Bay off Stingray Point between 1858 and 1965 is at Stingray Point Marina on the south side of the Rappahannock River, about 1.6 miles west of where the original light stood and where the pole light that replaced it still stands. The replica was completed in early 2003, working from exact-measure drawings of the original lighthouse made by the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment in 1884 and retained in the National Archives.
A staircase to the main level at the side of the lighthouse was not part of the original, which was entered through a trapdoor in the center of the floor; a gangplank between the keeper's boat and stairs leading to the trap door provided access, and the replica includes all these features. The outhouse-type structure on the left side of the gallery (deck), above, hung out over the water on the original; there is no door on the side facing the lighthouse wall. The bell on the roof is an actual old fog-warning bell, but smaller than the original; the mechanical bell-ringing apparatus is inside the dormer. The interior layout of the hexagonal structure departs somewhat from the original, which had three rooms; the bedroom is the same and is used as the marina's office, but the living room and kitchen of the original have been combined into a single room with modern kitchen area and furniture, including a flat-screen TV that surely would look out of place to the lighthouse's keepers and their families; the air conditioning also would be strange to them, but probably welcome. The TV shares wall space with maritime paintings, photos, and maps, as well as a framed "copy of the elevation drawing of the original 1858 drawings" of the Stingray Point Light. A wooden spiral staircase below the lantern connects the main and second levels, providing access to the bell-ringer mechanism and the ladders for climbing into the lantern room. An American-made 5th-order, drum-type Fresnel lens is in place in the lantern room, fitted with a low-wattage bulb so the light will not be mistaken for an active navigation aid.
Our visit Friday with granddaughter Isabella was arranged through Brenton S. Halsey, a marina owner, and the marina's office manager, known to me only as Lisa. I am very appreciative of their helpfulness in arranging our visit, and of Lisa's welcoming reception and comments about the lighthouse.

Feeding in the lagoon at Honeymoon Beach. This one was feeding in very shallow water, it seemed to be stirring up the sand while partially buried.
