“Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia hosted its annual Air Show drawing more than 280,000 visitors from 25 states and 12 countries over the three day event that is recognized as the Navy’s largest open house in North America. This year, the NAS Oceana Air Show forged a ground-breaking partnership with the Virginia Beach City Public School System (VBCPS) to create a one-of-a-kind “Outdoor STEM Laboratory” on an unprecedented scale. Recognizing the need to highlight career fields in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to America’s youth, the leadership of NAS Oceana and VBCPS committed to creating this Outdoor STEM Laboratory for every 5th grade student in Virginia Beach during the Friday practice air show on board NAS Oceana. The entire 5th grade class – totaling more than 6,500 students –attended the Friday air show for a full immersion in STEM displays, flying performances, ground static displays and a performance by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team. The goal was to provide each student at least three meaningful STEM interactions via more than 100 “access points” positioned on the flight line within four STEM zones. These displays were set up to educate and inspire our students to consider STEM fields of study with hands-on experiences in physics, robotics, 3D printing and much more. “

Visitors to the Goodman South Madison Library on April 5, 2014, were able to spend their mornings having fun exercising their minds at the Navigant STEM Fair. Kids and their families had the opportunity to investigate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, thanks to volunteers from Navigant, who organized and ran the fair in partnership with the library. Activities included exploring MG&E’s Pedal Power Generator, a Lego Robotics demonstration, the “Science of Goo”, dissecting an owl pellet, creating a battery using food, an an electricity demonstration. The stems of these Nicotiana plants are elongating in response to etiolation. They require more light than they are getting and they are stretching toward a source of light. Plant anatomy is plastic and allows this kind of movement; even in sessile (non-moving) plants. The physiology of etiolation is complicated and interesting.

This is a photo of the wonderful chemistry lab on campus. This photo shows how much equipment it has and how big the classroom is. This picture depicts how important science and mathematics are within the education system. The importance of science and math is very obvious throughout high school and schools use a lot of funding to create adequate science labs. Math and science subjects also have much importance placed on them and students quickly learn that excelling in these subjects will get you far and on the contrary, not being very good at these subjects will make you feel like you have less opportunities in future education and career options. While I think it is great that students feel supported in their studies, it is important to remind students that just because they do not choose to go into STEM, does not mean that they have failed and that they are not smart. I think it is a cycle of schools giving lots of funding and encouraging students to pursue STEM because those are the programs with the “smart people” because society has deemed scientific educational programs as elite and this then causes the education system to place a lot of importance on science and math. I hope this photo can teach people that no matter what program students choose to pursue, they will be supported.
The chunk of 28.6 seattube I've got here will probably not be what I use; I'll take one of my cutoff 28.6 steertube chunks and use it as the steerer clamp (the kit bike is going to use a 1" steertube because I don't want to modify the HT lugs for a 1⅛" steerer.)
The clampy part of the stem is from a 130mm steel quill stem I found on eBay a couple of years ago; I attempted to modify it to -17° for the sweet fixie™ with no success (the fillet snapped the first time I took it out; I patched it, then the fillet snapped the first time I took it out again. Lesson to self; don't do horizonal fillet brazing on stems, because there is leverage like whoa! from the handlebars) but there was enough left to make a 100mm threadless stem after all that.
The School of the Sciences is hosting their annual Expanding Your Horizons event, which encourages middle school girls from all across MD (including Baltimore City schools) to pursue STEM careers.
The National STEM Guitar Project, in partnership with NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Centers with funding provided through a grant from The National Science Foundation (#1304405), hosts innovative Guitar Building Institutes around the United States. The 5-day institutes, combined with additional instructional activities comprising 80 hours, provide faculty training on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for middle, high school, and post-secondary faculty. The institutes present and teach participants hands-on, applied learning techniques to help engage students and spark excitement for learning STEM subject matter.
Nationwide, there are increasing concerns from businesses about the supply of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics trained workers. Science and math test scores in the U.S. are among the lowest around the world.
The goal and objective of the STEM Guitar Building Institutes is to showcase a new way to present learning for students with applied methods.
