Harris Beach State Park is an Oregon State Park located on US Highway 101, north of Brookings. The day-use area offers a restroom and picnic area with tables, and the campground has RV sites, yurts and tent sites available year-round. It is named after the Scottish pioneer George Harris who settled here in the late 1880s to raise sheep and cattle. Harris Beach State Park is home to Bird Island (also known as Goat Island), which is reported to be the largest island off the Oregon Coast and is a National Wildlife Refuge. The island is also a breeding site for rare birds such as the tufted puffin. (oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&a...)

The Ohio State Reformatory (OSR), also known as the Mansfield Reformatory, is a historic prison located in Mansfield, Ohio in the United States. It was built between 1886 and 1910 and remained in operation until a 1990 federal court ruling (the 'Boyd Consent Decree') ordered the facility to be closed. While this facility was used in a number of films (including several while the facility was still in operation), TV shows and music videos, it was made famous by the film The Shawshank Redemption (1994) when it was used in the large panning scene and for the Warden's office.
The facility was built between 1886 and 1910. The original architect for the design was Levi T. Scofield from Cleveland, although the creation and construction of the entire building was entrusted to F.F. Schnitzer, whose name also appears on the cornerstone, and is recorded as Superintendent in documents found in the cornerstone. Schnitzer was presented with a silver double inkwell by the governor of the state in a lavish ceremony to thank him for his services. Although the architecture is often described as Germanic castle architecture, it is actually mostly Romanesque.
The Reformatory remained in full operation until December 1990 when it was closed via federal court order (the Boyd Consent Decree). Most of the grounds and support buildings, including the outer wall, have been demolished since the closing. In 1995, the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society was formed. They have turned the prison into a museum and conduct tours to help fund grounds rehabilitation projects and currently work to stabilize the buildings against further deterioration.
The East Cell Block remains the largest free standing steel cell block in the world at six tiers high. From 1935 until 1959 Arthur Lewis Glattke was the Superintendent. Initially a political appointment following Glattke's work on the Martin Davey campaign, by all accounts Glattke was respected by professionals and inmates alike. He implemented many reforms such as piped in radio music in the cell blocks. Glattke's wife, Helen Bauer Glattke, died of pneumonia three days following an accident in November 1950 where a handgun discharged when she was reaching into a jewelry box in the family's quarters. Glattke died following a heart attack suffered in his office on February 10, 1959. Over 200 people died at the OSR, including a few guards who were killed during escape attempts.
The Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society is currently working to restore the facility to its original state. Restorations to date include the removal of debris, replacement of roofing, complete restoration of the Warden's quarters, as well as the complete restoration of the central guard room between the East and West Cell Blocks. The restorations are being funded through donations and tour fees.

BASTROP, Texas – Despite earlier optimism, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department firefighters and other personnel were still facing a fire threat to historic structures at Bastrop State Park today.
According to TPWD incident commander Robert Crossman, all but about 100 acres of the 6,000-acre park have been blackened by fire, but firefighters have so far been able to save most of the Civilian Conservation Corps-constructed structures on the park, with two possible exceptions – two CCC observation structures believed to have been damaged. Lets play peek-a-boo for a second. This view is the produce wall in the old Albertsons blue-gray store. In Stater Bros.' remodeling, the department signage and the wall it was attached to came down, exposing this earlier (looks like 70s) paint scheme. (The framing you see is new construction, btw., and the black plastic was the deli corner.) Was this an Albertsons interior - or something else? Stater Bros. 7814 Firestone Blvd, Downey, CA 90241. Cellphone shot.

Massachusetts State House
Boston, Massachusetts
Built in 1798, the "new" State House is located across from the Boston Common on the top of Beacon Hill. The land was once owned by Massachusetts first elected governor, John Hancock. Charles Bullfinch, the leading architect of the day, designed the building.
The dome, originally made out of wood shingles, is now sheathed in copper and covered by 23 karat gold which was added to prevent leaks into the State House.

Umpqua Lighthouse State Park is located less than a mile from Salmon Harbor on Winchester Bay. The campground and developed day use areas are centered around Lake Marie. Access to this small freshwater lake is provided for angling and non-motorized boating. There is also a small sandy beach set aside for swimming or just relaxing.
The small overnight campground offers RV and tent campsites, along with two beautiful one-room log cabins. These warm and cozy cabins sleep four comfortably. They also have covered porches which overlook picturesque Lake Marie. Rustic and deluxe yurts are also available in the campground . Showers and restrooms are centrally located.
The park is centered in the stretch of towering sand dunes protected by the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. These dunes, many of which reach heights of 500 feet or more, are ideal for the off-road enthusiast, or for the person who enjoys the magnificent wonders of nature.
The Umpqua River Lighthouse towers above the entrance to Winchester Bay. The 65-foot tower contains a distinctive lens which emits a red and white flash. The lighthouse and adjacent museum are operated and maintained by the Douglas County Parks Department. For information about museum and lighthouse tours, call (541) 271-4631.

Dodge Charger
Picture Date: 04/08/2010
A very dirty Delaware State Police Dodge Charger. This Charger sports clear lenses on the lightbar which is different from most other DSP vehicles. This was also the first Charger DSP purchased and equipped, hence the experimental "swooped" striping on the sides. It was decided that the rest of the Chargers will have straight stripes, as normal, and this is the only Charger where the swooped stripes remained to my knowledge.

So, I know a lot of you didn't know this... But I do track. Our 4x1 team went to the state championship meet placed 7th going in, and ending up running a whole second personal record (which is a lot In a sprint race) and ended up placing 2nd In all of Oregon for 1A! I am so thankful for this and thankful and blessed to have these guys for this relay. I can only give God all the glory.
Last week I had the pleasure of heading to the coast to spend the day at the beautiful oak-lined Savannah State University for Time Magazine. The article, by Laura Fitzpatrick, uses Savannah State as an example of modern school integration, as there is talk of merging this historic black university with a neighboring majority-white school to cut budget costs.
I trudged through the marsh behind the school with a marine science class collecting fauna for a lab, met members from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Chi Chapter, saw the tailend of a track practice and more. Almost every student I spoke to said one of the main reasons for choosing their school was because of pride in its rich African-American history.
