In this iconic video installation, Piper invites her audience into a formidable "salon." In it, she is dressed as the "nice white lady" figure which ultimately confuses and unsettles them with her softly repeated refrain, "I am black." Dressed as the Connecticut housewife- pearl necklace, and conservative blue suit, her hands are folded and the hair is neatly parted. Yet an overturned table protects her "cornered" persona with a set of chairs that seat you in her gaze and within your own discomfit.
