Remember that foreign space object hurtling towards us at break-neck speed?
Well, the suspected comet, 3I/ATLAS, soared past Mars earlier this week, giving astronomers a closer glimpse. And now, Harvard scientist Avi Loeb has warned of the worrying reality if the object were, in fact, a hostile visitor from another planet.
The apparent space rock was first spotted back in July by a space telescope at Río Hurtado, Chile. It's thought to be an 'interstellar' space rock, having traveled from well beyond our solar system, and now through ours. Only two other interstellar objects have ever been identified; Oumuamua in 2017 and Borisov in 2019.
The European Space Agency (ESA) got a closer look at 3I/ATLAS as it passed Mars between 1 and 7 October. During its closest approach on 3 October, the comet was still 30 million kilometers away.
But ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter managed to capture blurry footage showing a small white dot; the comet’s core surrounded by a cloud of gas and dust called a coma.

The story of creation.... Heaven and Hell, Light and Shadow. People don’t have colors except black and white...although there are a lot of other colors... there are Gray, Blue and Red... unseen and superstition in religion and business and merchants of religion... oh they don’t have products. You are going to find people who are confused. They don’t know they are lost or spin, a mask Nekab or sea bathing suit. Oh we are going to live only once... and the goal of Geddo, Egypt’s fate was depending on it... Egypt! Egypt is beautiful and beauty is Egypt... it’s going to solve all our problems... housing, instead of reading for all, it would be housing for all, bread for all, working for all and health care for all. Isn’t this better than reading for all! Beauty of Egypt is a wonderful article but why are we not rising! Rising... Rising... yeah he is a liar... Didn’t he say that the health insurance would cover allll the people!! All citizens! Now people are paying a lot to have a health insurance... yeah he is a liar...I have heard him myself saying that! Bio: Hend Samir is an Egyptian artist born in Kuwait in 1986. Faculty of Fine Arts graduate, 2008 in the department of printed designs. Since then Samir is known as a printmaker, designer, media and installation artist that usually identifies her work with concepts like: Homeless in Egypt, Life in Old Cairo and later, The Great Revolution. Her work has been exhibited in The Cairo Atelier, Darb 17 18, Syndicate of Plastic Arts at the Opera House and the Van Gogh gallery. Samir is also the Art Director of the Fayoum International Art Center 2010-2011. The Center is a meeting point for artists from all over the world to be an open path for dialogues between different cultures. It’s also a place where artists can experience painting, printmaking, Sculpture, video, Sound art, performance art, Cartoon and animation. She is also one of the Firefly Tunnels artists. The overall goal of this project is to build a language of peace through the actions of art.

Artist's statement for my solo show in the Buntrock Commons at St. Olaf College, shown from March 19th until April 10th, 2009. Work was produced during the month of January, 2009, as the final project in a month-long course Advanced Drawing course I took.
The statue at left by Pablo Machioli was placed at the site of the memorial to Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson in Baltimore's Wyman Park as a protest statement, and subsequently suffered significant damage that the police say was the result of vandalism. I've added to this image a depiction of two Baltimore Ravens players that were kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem at last Sunday's football game. The statue of Lee and Jackson was removed from its pedestal and was put into storage by the City some weeks ago.

This little garden is on the near west side of Detroit. The significance for me is it may very well be on an empty lot where one of my mother's childhood homes once stood. I also find it significant because it makes a statement about the resourcefulness of the folks in Detroit- a turning lemons into lemonade kind of a thing. Around the corner, right off Cass Avenue, sits a vacant corner lot. The locals have salvaged old couches and discarded auto bench seats and have fashioned a small park with the make- do seating placed under of the shade of a few low hanging maple trees.
In a few weeks my sister is coming up from Florida for her summer visit. This may be the last summer in Michigan for my folks as they prepare to move south. I think we will take my folks down to Greektown for dinner, maybe stop by the DIA- my Mother's favorite place- and drive through her old neighborhood. Maybe capture a few shots for her take with her to Florida. A reminder of her home.
Here and there small towns and big cities make their own display or host a traveling set of crosses, in which each marker represents 100 or 1000 aborted fetuses, for example. This is a powerful and persisting visual statement. Does the opposing position have something equally visible, though: something to show how life is different for the woman thus impacted?

Monique Jenkinson is a multifaceted artist whose work places itself in the gaps between dance, theater, drag and performance art. She has created and performed internationally and locally at ODC Theater, CounterPULSE, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the de Young Museum, and Trannyshack in San Francisco; the New Museum, Judson Church, Danspace Project, Howl Festival and the legendary Stonewall in New York; the Met Theatre in Los Angeles; the New Orleans Fringe Festival; the Coachella Festival; and in Reykjavik, Amsterdam, Edinburgh and London.
Monique’s drag queen alter ego, Fauxnique, a prolific fixture on the experimental performance scene, made history as the first woman to win San Francisco’s infamous Miss Trannyshack Pageant and was named ‘Best Drag Act’ (2009) in the San Francisco Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay Readers’ Poll. She also appears in the documentary Filthy Gorgeous: the Trannyshack Story and the April/May ’08 issue of Bust magazine.
Notable projects and accolades include: a de Young Museum Irvine Fellowship for 2012, two successful solo shows (Faux Real, which played in New York and London after a sold-out San Francisco run, and Luxury Items, which culminated to acclaim at CounterPULSE after a sold out premiere at ODC Theater), playing the DIRT (a role originated by Justin Bond) in Taylor Mac’s Lily’s Revenge at the Magic Theater and originating the eponymous role in Silver for Gold: the Odyssey of Edie Sedgwick by David J. (of Bauhaus and Love & Rockets fame), visual art exhibitions Scores (Lawrimore Project, Seattle) and Presence (Torrance Art Museum), Truly Madly Deeply at the Movement Research Festival in New York, vocals and video for the club dance track ‘Lipstique,’ a Guardian Outstanding Local Discovery (GOLDIE) Award for Performance, SF Weekly’s ‘Best Performance Artist 2010,’ and 7X7 Magazine’s ‘Hot 20.’
Monique spent five years as co-director (with actor Kevin Clarke) of the performance duo Hagen & Simone, is a past artist-in-residence at ODC Theater and CounterPULSE, and a 2007 recipient (with mentor Keith Hennessey) of the CHIME Grant. Her solo and collaborative work has also received support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission and Theatre Bay Area. She has a B.A. in Dance and Literature from Bennington College.
Artist Statement
Monique Jenkinson is a performer and maker of performance. Though her work moves outside and between recognizable genres, she maintains deep roots in dance. She presents her work in theaters, nightclubs and museums, and seeks to explore connections and tensions between art and entertainment, between contrivance and ‘the moment,’ and between freedom and limitation. Her work explores femininity, glamour, physicality, difficulty, and process. “I approach choreography as image making, and dance as an opportunity to revel in the visceral. I use the face as an integral part of the dancing body and delight in exposing the labor of dancing. ”
Though her early training was in ballet, her subsequent education and art practice reach toward the interdisciplinary and unclassifiable. “I have not ‘fallen into’ the spaces between disciplines, but have intentionally placed myself there – drawing on physicality (classical ballet and post-modern improvisation), theatricality (camp, the ridiculous and the absurd), and theory (queer and feminist). From this position, I strive to create specific, pointed works.”
Jenkinson emerged out of a feminist, postmodern, improvisational dance and choreographic lineage at Bennington College (Trisha Brown and Yvonne Rainer), but grew toward a tradition of radical queer performance (Jack Smith, John Kelly, Leigh Bowery) that uses glamour, excess, and drag to entertain, transcend and horrify. “Yvonne Rainer said ‘no to spectacle’ so that I could say yes to sequins.” Rather than reject the traditional trappings of performance and the performance of femininity, Jenkinson embraces them. Her practice of feminism celebrates glamorous women as masters of artifice, and her intimacy with both the oppressive and empowering effects of feminine tropes allows her to create a zone of play, from which she makes her particular critique.
The Flickr Lounge, I is for Intriguing - street performers seen at the Farmer's Market last Saturday. I suspect they have something to do with the Green Party, an assumption based on the fact that all the main political parties were present in some shape-or-form in central Paderborn that day and this lot were using dustbins as props.

Intellectual Copyright: As of this morning I'm pretty darn sure someone has taken an image of mine without permission, possibly more than one. Despite my privacy and permission being set, from day one of being active on Flickr, so that only I can download and print my images and not allowing 3rd party sharing, etc, it still can (and will) happen from what I can tell.
The insult added to this injury is the fact that this person actually contacted me enquiring about buying a print of this image. I'm participating in a public forum for myriad reasons, but having my pictures misappropriated is not one of them. Not impressed!
