Australia was approaching its bicentennial celebrations, and after Brisbane’s success hosting the 1982 Commonwealth Games, Brisbane City Council and the Queensland State Government were confident they could win the bid to hold the next World Exhibition.
Brisbane won the right to hold the event and Expo 88 was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 30 April 1988. By the time it closed, it had changed the way the world saw Brisbane and helped shaped the city as we know it today.
Starting with an estimated budget of $645 million, the Queensland State Government developed a World Expo that would recoup and support its own costs and promote international investment in Queensland, both during and after the event. South Bank, badly damaged in the 1973–74 floods, was chosen and the site acquired for $150 million. Developers completed construction on time and within budget. The targets set for ticket sales were reached 11 weeks before Expo 88 had even opened. It was off to a smashing start.
Celebrating ‘Leisure in the age of technology’, there was an incredible range of pavilions, performances, parades, comedy and artwork on show. Guests could experience over 50 restaurants filled with flavours from around the globe. Hosted over six months, it drew more than 18 million people to the renewed South Bank parklands district. An average of 100,000 people a day entered the gates.
An influx of royalty, celebrities and international visitors came to Brisbane for the exhibition, but it was Queensland residents who attended the most often, purchasing 500,000 season tickets. Expo 88 provided something the city needed: an easy-to-access recreational facility with exciting things to do, see and experience. Brisbanites returned again and again to socialise and enjoy the festival atmosphere.
The monorail was one of the most popular attractions. Giving travellers a view of the entertainments from above, it operated along a 2.3-kilometre track during Expo 88, taking up to 44,000 visitors a day from one side of Expo to the other, along the Brisbane River. Built by Swedish manufacturer Von Roll, the monorail cost $12 million and comprised four MkII trains with nine carriages each. The idea of keeping the monorail operating after Expo and extending it into the Brisbane CBD was discussed. Ultimately, the existing monorail wasn’t a feasible long-term people-moving solution and it was disbursed. Three trains were sold back to Von Roll and were used in Germany’s Europa-Park. The remaining train and some tracks were incorporated into the Sea World theme park on the Gold Coast.
Some of the most significant installations, exhibitions and artworks from Expo 88 were relocated and continue to be enjoyed today. Ken Done AM, a prominent Australian artist and designer, was commissioned to produce the entry and exit statement art pieces for the Australia Pavilion. Using the word ‘Australia’, Done produced a sign nearly six metres tall that could not be missed by anyone who attended Expo 88. The letters have since been restored and are on display at the Caboolture Heritage Village. The Nepal Peace Pagoda was the only international pavilion that remained on-site, after a petition asking that it remain attracted about 70,000 signatures. The Japan Garden and Pond were gifted to the city of Brisbane and moved to the Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-Tha.
The buzz of activity, the investment in South Bank’s infrastructure and the spotlight on Brisbane transformed the city. The physical legacy left by Expo 88 turned South Bank into a thriving social space and prominent cultural hotspot: 42 hectares was dedicated to the construction of the South Bank Parklands.

Pillar of Shame in Hong Kong

The Pillar of Shame (Chinese: 國殤之柱; Jyutping: gwok3 soeng1 zi1 cyu5; pinyin: Guóshāng zhī Zhù; lit. 'martyrs' pillar') in Hong Kong was a copper sculpture, first erected in Victoria Park in 1997 to mark the eighth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The statue depicts 50 torn and twisted bodies to symbolize those who died in the government crackdown. On the base of the statue, the history and pictures of the massacre are carved in and engraved into the base, in both English and Chinese, are the words "The Tiananmen Massacre", "June 4th 1989" and "The old cannot kill the young forever."
The Pillar was first exhibited at the Candlelight Vigil in commemoration of the eighth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests on 3 June 1997. Following the vigil on the night of 4 June 1997, local university students fought for a place to permanently home the statue. After scuffles with the police and controversy with the university leadership, at 3 a.m. students succeeded in moving the 2-tonne statue onto the podium of the Haking Wong Building at the University of Hong Kong, however the pieces were not assembled due to concerns that the floor was not strong enough. The Pillar was re-erected at the same place on 16 June 1997.
During the following months, the Pillar was exhibited at the following universities:
•Chinese University of Hong Kong from 28 September 1997
•Lingnan College from 2 November 1997
•Hong Kong Baptist University from 29 November 1997
•Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 23 January 1998
•Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 1 March 1998
•City University of Hong Kong from 29 March 1998.
On 31 May 1998, the ninth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, the sculpture was returned to Victoria Park where a candlelit vigil was held. On the morning before the vigil, a self-professed artist splashed two buckets of red paint onto the Pillar, claiming that "the blood of people is also my blood."
On 24 and 25 September 1998, The Hong Kong University Students' Union (HKUSU) held a general polling on a motion to home the Pillar of Shame at the University of Hong Kong on a long-term basis. The students' motion was carried, when 1,629 out of 2,190 voted to support, and the Pillar was moved onto the Haking Wong Podium again on 3 December 1998. It was again exhibited at the 10th anniversary candlelit vigil of the Massacre in 1999 at Victoria Park. Without the university authorities' endorsement, the Pillar was moved back to the Haking Wong podium after the anniversary,[6][7] where it has remained on display; a silent tribute is held by HKUSU and the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China in May every year.
On 30 April 2008, the Pillar of Shame was painted orange as part of the project The Color Orange, to raise awareness about human rights in China. As the sculptor Galschiøt was denied access to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China painted the Pillar without his participation.
Dispute over potential removal in October 2021
In October 2021 the University of Hong Kong, represented by law firm Mayer Brown, formally requested that the statue be removed, although they did not cite any specific reason for the request. The university released a statement claiming that the statue belonged to "an external organization" which had publicly announced its disbandment – referring to the Hong Kong Alliance – and that it had written to the Alliance based on the "latest risk assessment and legal advice" to request the removal. Galschiøt said that he was "shocked" when hearing the news about the potential removal and that he, who considered himself as remaining the owner of the statue, had never been contacted by the university in the matter. He urged HKU to allow the statue to remain, saying that it would help the world to remember the peaceful demonstrators who "were killed for expressing their wishes for political participation". He said that he hoped to "be able to transport the sculpture out of Hong Kong under orderly conditions", and that any damage to the statue would be the university's responsibility. On 15 October, Mayer Brown announced that it would no longer be representing the university in the matter of the statue, while retaining it as a client. The move came days after intense pressure, including by an open letter penned by 28 civil society groups, as well as by overseas intellectuals.
Demolition of the statue in December 2021
According to media accounts in Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong blockaded the Pillar of Shame and the surrounding area on 22 December 2021. Near midnight, the university sent security guards and workers to the site, prepared trucks with cranes for its demolition, and the security guards blocked journalists from approaching and attempted to stop media outlets filming. By daylight on 23 December 2021, the statue had disappeared. The university stated that the statue would be put into storage, reportedly in Kadoorie Centre. Galschiøt expressed his shock in a public message the same day, referring to Hong Kong as a lawless place and announcing that he would claim compensation if it wasn't returned to him. By 24 December 2021, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Lingnan University had followed suit regarding the 4th June memorials on their campus.
Following the removal, Galschiøt received over 40 inquiries about making copies of the statue. He decided to relinquish his right to commercial exclusivity, so that anyone can make a copy, provided that all profits are given to the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement. In May 2022, a replica was installed at the University of Oslo, scheduled to be on display about a month.

A Photo A Day For A Year

I almost died the other day. For once, there is actually no hyperbole in that statement. I really did come that close. Allow me to explain.
Thanks to you guys, I was able to take that long, treacherous journey from southeast Iowa to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to pick the girl up. And oh my god if that drive wasn't the most perilous and difficult one that I have ever made. I've been through the Rocky Mountains at the tail end of winter. I've driven the twenty-six hours to New Orleans and back in a single go, and just about every crevice of interstate in between and never have I experienced what I did on the drive here. I type this from Pittsburgh, actually, two days after my intended date of departure. I'm kind of scared to leave to be honest with you.
I made it through Illinois without much to write about. It was a little blustery, a little windy, but the drive was pretty standard fare. In fact, I was quite elated to get through the entire state without seeing even a single police officer. That was a first. But then I hit Indiana and the snow really started to fall.
This was a huge problem because my windshield wipers are pretty much inoperative. They don't do their job well without the aid of wiper fluid and my nozzle has been completely frozen solid since winter began. Even when I poured hot water over the thing at my first gasoline stop, it refroze within minutes. The wind chill outside was a staggering -27 degrees Fahrenheit and I realized pretty quickly that the effort to keep the port open was a fool's errand. Semi-trucks kept kicking up dirty slush and rendered my windshield obscured to the point where it was very hard to see through it. And it kept happening over and over and over again. By the time I hit the Ohio border (nine hours into what is usually a ten hour drive in total), I was exhausted.
And then the heavy snow turned whiteout.
I arrived in Columbus, Ohio at about ten-thirty and was greeted by a six lane interstate that was 100% unplowed. The roads were slick and the cars on either side of me didn't seem to mind that fact much. They were flying by at speeds that I couldn't even dare climb to even if I wanted to reach them. I kept my speedometer needle hovering at around 60 MPH (what I deemed to be a safe speed given the circumstances) and tried to inch my way through the city. I still couldn't see much through that obscured windshield and it was ten times worse now that there was so much snow involved. I thought back to the morning when my brother Dakota scolded me for even considering the drive in such conditions.
"The roads are straight shit, dude." He told me.
"Nah, they aren't so bad." I replied, then promptly left.
I took the exit to Wheeling, West Virginia and hit a patch of black ice as I was coming off of it. This is normal even in Iowa and I'm well aware of how to correct such an event, so I turned in the direction of my spin and, upon correcting myself, immediately hit another patch of black ice. My car spun out, then kept spinning through all six lanes of traffic, and landed less than eight inches from the embankment on the left side. Somehow, something that I can't rationalize or explain, I didn't hit a single car. I didn't hit the edge of the embankment. Instead, I was momentarily stuck on the edge of the road with a body so full of adrenaline that I was still shaking when I finally did arrive to Pennsylvania some five hours later.
Now, I'm not a believer in miracles or divine intervention or anything like that. In fact, I'm pretty damn skeptical of anything even remotely resembling supernatural activity. I used to go ghost hunting with my buddy Joel, an avid believer in the supernatural, and I would crack wise-ass jokes and upset him greatly in the middle of the night at various cemeteries or basements. To me, when you die, you simply become worm food. There is no more you. You are extinguished, you are a dead light-bulb, you are a decaying corpse that no longer exists in any capacity beyond the cadaver. I've long maintained that position and I still do believe that. So, when I'd ghost hunt with Joel, the whole thing just reeked of silliness to me. I couldn't take it seriously.
But god damn if I don't have a hard time rationalizing the piling coincidence of this. How did I spin through so much traffic and avoid hitting a single car? How did I land so conveniently close to an embankment and not slam into it? How was I able to simply put my car in a different gear to get myself unstuck? The whole thing really put my head for a loop and even now, even right here in Pennsylvania retelling the event, I can't get over just how lucky I was in that moment. In all, the whole thing happened in probably six seconds. It wasn't the kind of thing where time slowed down and I was able to make sense of it before it ended. Everything happened so fast and then it was over. Cars continued to fly by me at rapid pace. The world kept spinning. The snow kept falling. My windshield was still madly obscured.
I'm a little nervous to get back on the road tomorrow morning, though I have so much work to get through that it makes me a little nauseous to think about. I know I need to get back. I know I gotta get back to the grind, start the videos again, etc; etc. I have to do this. But it scares me.
So I apologize for the last couple days with no output on these custom Patreon posts, but I haven't had access to a computer and I didn't particularly want to create posts that didn't have much graphical content. But I felt like I owed you guys an explanation as to my whereabouts and this story was too much to not share.
I will update you again (this time with photos) tomorrow evening when I arrive back to my house in Iowa. Wish us luck. I'll see you guys on the other side. Love you.

Yesterday morning this was the view from my work place, which has a seat, small desk, and some paperwork. Im on wheels, my paper work takes 2 minutes, and I get paid to enjoy this view! Life is good :)

Greater Manchester Police welcomed 25 new special constables at an attestation ceremony at Sedgley Park on Tuesday 5 March.
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry and Special Constabulary Chief Officer Mike Walmsley welcomed the new officers, and looked on as they took their Police Oath before local magistrate Joan Cooper JP.
All of the recruits attending the ceremony have completed a five month training programme and, once fully operational, will volunteer at least four hours of their free time every week. The main focus of their duties will be to assist GMP officers in serving local communities and preventing crime.
All Special Constables share the same powers as regular officers, including the power of arrest.

On March 26-27, 2015, O'Brien & Gere, in partnership with Syracuse University's College of Engineering and Computer Science, hosted it's third annual SPARK innovation competition in Syracuse, New York. In 1983, Port Parham, in South Australia, faced a turning point.
Between the proposed Department of defence extension and the proposed airport at Two Wells, Port Parham and it's residents were about to become extinct.
A battle begun that ran for almost 4 years. 6 elderly residents passed away during the battle and in the last year, it looked like the future of the area for public use, was clouded.
The Army had created the "Department of defence, Proposed extension of the proof and experimental establishment, Pt , Draft environmental impact statement"
The Department of defence needed to test larger guns. The current area was the army firing range, Gun testing range and munitions testing area.
They needed to expand to test the new (At the time) 155 mm Howitzer. They needed to test it up to 6 times a year and needed 30 kms extra area (The range is 40 kms).
The Army faced three options.
Option 1 was to acquire land all the way up to Pt Prime (All the way from Sandy Point). This included Port Parham (Inhabited), Webb Beach(Inhabited) and Thompson Beach
(Uninhabited). Pt Prime being a previous shelling range and not a very nice beach). That leaves no real beaches north of Adelaide.
They did consider relocating all buildings and people to Pt Prime/Thompson's beach. Thompson's beach had no houses or infrastructure yet.
This plan would have been end to private land development planned at Thompson's.
This plan would include $5.5 million to acquire 5000 ha of land.
Option 2, move the firing range further north and fire into the existing area.
Option 3, close and relocate the firing range.
The preferred option for the Army was option 1. This meant they would compulsory acquire the land, lease it back for 10 years and close the beach. You cold see the beach but not
access it for the rolled up security barbed wire and armed men on hovercrafts. This was deemed to be in the national interest and a matter of "National Security. It was highlighted that
the Pt Wakefield range was the only lace in Australia where they can test the ammunition like this.
The army had been testing munitions in the mud flats since 1929 and it is littered with dangerous unexploded ammunition. They also test destroyer 5" navel shells and it is impossible
to recover all the shells. The Army has had access to the sea and airspace North of Pt Prime since the 2nd world war. (For all types of Weapons testing).
The army fired at high tide and retrieved munitions at low tide and then inspected them.
The area of Pt Parham was allocated to the army in 1937 for defence purposes. From 1978 government allowed freehold land and local council had been approving building permits.
The area North was not considered to have any restrictions except a building height restriction of 15 feet. The army approved many dwellings over this height since 1978.
The current proof range has been in use since about 1944. It is currently Sandy point to about 2 Kms north of Pt Parham. It is looked after by the Keswick Barracks which is a barracks
of the Australian Army in Keswick
As option 1 was pushed into the public space, it lead to all kinds of protests. During these, the gun on Pt Wakefield road was turned into a tent, defaced and graffiti.
This started the fight for land and homes. This plan would kill Pt Parham. Some of the current residents had been there since the depression. Some of them had settled in the area to
retire. There were 100's of full time residents and thousands of shack owners and other visitors that frequented the area.
The residents don't want to have the Army contaminate Pt Parham for all time, like they have where they are at the moment. They have already admitted that they will never be able to
clear the current mudflats of dangerous unexploded material. The residents also feared nuclear testing.
In July 1983 a document was released that outlined the process to compulsory acquire land. This is when the battled heated up. There were many meetings in the old social club (Grain
store - Webbs Carbonate of lime), at Collins Corner and beside the old shade house on the esplanade. There was a 13 point protest plan developed and issues were found in the
environmental impact study. Many people from Pt Parham and Webb beach attended the meetings, as did many holiday makers from across Australia.
People started to paint their fences and roof's with slogans.

"I don't trust them"

Hat's, stickers, shirts and beer cools came out with the slogans

"Save the crabbers from the army shells"
I still have my yellow hat somewhere with the "Save the crabbers and the gulf" on the front. It is likely a rarity these days.
ABC, Channel 7 and 10 frequented the beach to have interviews with the residents and fly over the site in their helicopters.
Kevin Collins (member of Action Committee), Ian Featherstone (Chairman - Parham Action committee) and Leon Broster (Chairman Mallala council) appeared regularly on the news to
show that they were against the plans.
Local member John Meyer(?) and Lands minister Mr Abbot were against it but it was a federal issue and they could do nothing.
Len Web was interviewed. He had lived at Port Parham all his life and ran the shell grit plant. Shell grit is not widely available and sought after for poultry.
Col. Phillip Cooper and Major Andrew (Andy) Renolds came to Port Parham meetings to try and explain why this needed to happen. Barry Tompson of the
"Pt Wakefield friends of the proof range" wanted it to go ahead as he did not want Port Wakefield to die. He did not want the proof range to move.
Kim Beazley, the Federal defence minister, wanted to wait on the environmental study before making a decision. Premier John Bannon was against this.
After the battle, Kim Beazley compromised. In the end 2900 ha was acquired including 16 farms and 2 houses inland.
Pt Parham gave up 2 kms of land and coast (It was the army's anyway) and Port Parham has thrived ever since.
