A performance at Fluxee-klubi in Turku, 30.1.2010. I had a standup comedy text in English which I translated, badly, on the fly into my crippled Finnish.
Since Panglish, or if you're living in the West, European English is such a common tongue these days, one is rather used to hearing one's language subjected to all sorts of manglings, reworkings, abuses, inventions, and accents from outer space. The same cannot be said about a language spoken by a few more than five million people, and almost nowhere else on earth other than in Finland. That's where I come in, with my seven years of lazily learned Finnish: verbs half-conjugated, endings haphazardly strewn about, and making rather more free than one would prefer with pronunciation. It's the best I can do.
I wouldn't say that I worry about the English language, exactly, but I wonder whether as-a-second-languagers are truly aware of the kind of class difference, as it were, that exists between us.
Also, the nice thing about this performance is that I can repeat it until I can't--that is, until my Finnish is no longer remarkably weird.
