Joyful performance during a break at the ‘SIAL Paris’ trade exhibition.

Energetic live performance by Jally Kebba & his band during a fund raising event at the Jazz Cafe, London City.

About:

Accomplished kora playing maverick Jally Kebba Susso is a UK based griot, born and raised in 74 generations of Gambian musical heritage. But he is not your ordinary griot.

Forging a new trajectory of sound for the West African harp - songwriter and composer - he honed his own upbeat electronic sound over years of experimentation on the London underground scene since 2002 and as a core member of Afriquoi.

Skilfully mixing contemporary Mandinka and Wollof music, this is a new blend of afro-futurist psychedelic funky kora that is immediately accessible and uplifting, yet filled with nuance and intoxicating rhythmical layers that give the music depth and intrigue.

Raised in a household of musicians, Jally Kebba was exposed to incredible musicianship from a very early age and under the guidance of his father Bully Suso, a very well-respected kora player and his elder brothers, by 13 he was touring internationally across

Europe.

In 2007 he formed his band Manding Sabu and with them ran a highly acclaimed African music residency night at Passing Clouds for 5 years called Strings on Fire. He has released two albums of original compositions - Banjul- London (2017) and Malaye Warr

(2012) and is gigging extensively at festivals and venues across UK and Europe.

The new Freedom EP was released in 2021, the punchiest offering to date, pushed musical boundaries for afro-electro kora. Precision, speed and a merciless energy characterise their performance style making them solid dance floor fillers.

To the ones who’ve interest in Kora music and like to hear something different, I would suggest listening to some of it on his youtube channel:

Today I was invited to take photos at a Chinese dance school located in the Silicon Valley. Today was one of their biannual performances. Kids age 7 and up perform traditional dances in Chinese costumes. This lady performed a modern dance - she was excellent.

I used a fast f/1.8 prime lens, which allowed short exposures at ISO 400. I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance.

We buried the masks a long time ago.

But some stages still remember our names. Reactivation in progress…

After I was done shooting the Tom Petty Tribute Band with my 75-300mm zoom lens, I put my 18-55mm lens back on to get this shot of more people gathering in front of the stage. Either there weren't that many Tom Petty fans at the Cruise Night, or else they weren't impressed with this particular group.

Event: Super Yosakoi, Tokyo, Japan, 27-28 August 2011

Yosakoi started some decades ago with the purpose of revitalizing the struggling post war economy of Japan. This year's Super Yosakoi in Tokyo is aimed to help the tsunami hit areas. Participants are dressed in colorful outfits and struts the streets of Harajuku and Omotesando to the rhythm of their naruko, a clapper (as seen in the photo) which was traditionally used to scare the birds off their crop fields. Hundreds of groups from different localities and prefectures participated and each group is mostly composed of 30 (maybe, just my estimate) and more members.

It was a difficult shot with regard to focus/depth, framing the fast-shoven flag and placement of the flag-bearer in the frame as he constantly moved from one end to the other..

But a hi-speed continuous shutter did its magic. Lens: 70-200 mm, F2.8 VR Nikkor.

The Chinese opera has their facebook i.e. 臉譜 the catalogue of faces for different characters. By looking at the face painting pattern, you will know the character is a good or bad guy.

Is that simple and easy in real life?

Kathakali artist "Kalamandalam Gopi" making up for a Kathakali.

Kathakali (Malayalam: കഥകളി, Sanskrit: कथाकेळिः) is a highly stylized classical Indian dance-drama noted for the attractive make-up of characters, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defined body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. It originated in the country's present day state of Kerala during the 17th century and has developed over the years with improved looks, refined gestures and added themes besides more ornate singing and precise drumming. - Wikipedia

ENG

She’s not dancing. She’s reigning.

Perched on her hoop like a queen on a crescent moon, she defies balance—and the haze, her accomplice, wraps her in secrets.

The stage holds its breath: is this a pause, or the world stopping?

The spotlights falter, shadows stretch.

What if the hoop is nothing but a star trap?

Four days to go to opening night. Final rehearsals before going to the theater tomorrow.

Time for Dad to brag about his youngest a little!

"Drummer Justin Chesarek lends a new perspective to familiar American songwriting ranging from gospel spirituals to pop songs, plus original material by Chesarek. The band, featuring faculty bassist Marc Miller, guitarist Patrick Arthur, and vocalist Kati Stewart, will introduce the jazz element of improvisation to songs where it did not previously exist and bridge the gap between contemporary songwriting and traditional jazz. Songs to include "Friendship" (Pops Staples), "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" (The Beatles), "Lo and Behold" (James Taylor), and more."

I didnt adjust the white balance. Actually the light was reddish. If i adjust the white balance it will look more realistic and less dramatic :-)

EN Movement begins long before the first step.

It starts in silence, in those unseen hours when the body learns to push beyond its limits and the mind refuses to surrender. Every gesture carries the memory of countless efforts, conquered doubts, and quiet victories witnessed by no one.

Here, the dancer is not merely pointing toward a direction.

He is declaring an intention.

His gaze is already fixed on the horizon he has chosen. His body becomes an extension of his will, shaped by discipline, driven by passion, and sustained by a determination that accepts neither shortcuts nor compromise.

For true strength is not found in power alone.

It is found in the ability to keep moving forward when everything suggests stopping.

It captured a little performer confidently dancing under vivid red lighting, embodying the lively spirit of K-pop culture.
