Proportion is one of the main things I was focusing on in this photo as well as rule of thirds. I say proportion because the pinecones are much larger than the pine tree and the tree is out of focus, and I say the rule of thirds because my eyes go right to the tip of that one blade of grass on the left of the picture. Depth and field is also one I forget to mention earlier the way the very front pinecones are out of focus and then the back tree is out of focus as well. This makes the photo feel more three dimensional and how I image a bug looks at the world around its self. This photo was meant to make you feel small compared to the large pinecones.
Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro is not an easy lens. The shallow DoF on this lens makes it hard to frame shots. At this time I am not sure if I have received a soft lens.

I could have added many more remotes but thought this was adequate. We've amassed a lot of these over the years.

I love the well worn beauty of old books
Haven't yet found the time to complete the Beyond Layers assignment of photographing favorite books...but thought this older photo I took a couple of months ago would also communicate my love of old books...

Squealing and chugging a pair of CN Dash 9s bring a northbound up Steelton Hill on a beautiful spring morning in western Duluth.
One of those locations that is hard to ever get good light on because of the angle, wires, and shadows, so this view with lime green will have to do. Will have to try something here with an afternoon northbound this summer though. Was up here to shoot the helpers on the tail anyways.

A test using Helicon Focus using the default DMap settings with 17 shots @ f8 just to keep the entire lens in focus. Compared to single shot @ f32.
One might think that the focus stacking doesn't present much of an advantage. If you look closely, the single shot suffers from CA (see the detail of the "Z 40mm 1:2..." text) due to the effects of diffraction. Make no mistake, the 105Z is a fabulous lens but it cannot escape physics.
Practice focus stacking on microscope pix I took with my microscope, my Canon T4i Rebel camera, a 15 dollar macro tube and a 30 dollar DSLR-to-microscope adapter.
This was my first try stacking. Hope to get better at this.
Also the one of the stuffed animals is practicing bokeh while everyone is asleep. lol.
