Midnight Moment: Alex Prager, Applause

In partnership with Lehmann Maupin & The Broadway League, Times Square Arts presents artist Alex Pragerās Applause on Times Squareās electronic billboards from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in June. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts.
In the heart of the Theater District, Applause turns viewing expectations upside-down, exposing the underlying tension between a performer and audience. Prager inserts viewers into the role of the performer, looking out at a costumed audience applauding on an eerily endless loop. The cheering actors, filmed within the OpĆ©ra Bastille, stare directly at onlookers directly in loops just short enough to feel unnatural, continuing Pragerās psychological examination of the complex dynamics that exist between the individual and the crowd and the emotional effect of two opposing viewpoints: the watcher and the watched.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in the historic heart of Cape Town's working harbour is South Africa's most-visited destination, having the highest rate of foreign tourists of any attraction in the country.

Nobel Square honours South Africa's four Nobel Peace laureates: the late Chief Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and former presidents Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk. The sculptures of the four Laureates stand in the form of a crescent with Table Mountain in the background, overlooking Nobel Square.
They are slightly larger than life-size and have the Laureates' preferred quotations engraved in their chosen language in front of the sculptures. The Peace and Democracy sculpture - a narrative work acknowledging the contribution of women and children to the attainment of peace in South Africa - is slightly more to the centre of the square. All five sculptures are cast in bronze.

Japanese artist Ryoji Ikedaās film test pattern is reimagined for the Times Square billboards, Oct. 1-31. From 11:57pm to midnight each night, digital screens will be taken over by tightly synchronized, flickering black-and-white imagery mining data for mathematical beauty as part of Midnight Moment.
At a special event on October 16, sound was incorporated into the Midnight Moment for the first time. Headphones were made available to the public on a first-come/first-served basis to view the work as a fully immersive experience.
Midnight Moment is a presentation of the Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts. Midnight Moment: A Digital Gallery is the largest coordinated effort in history by the sign operators in Times Square to display synchronized, cutting-edge creative content at the same time every day. October's presentation is in partnership with the French Institute Alliance FranƧaise (FIAF)ās Crossing the Line festival and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
