The Market Square, the heart of the city.

The pride not only of Šariš, but also of the whole of Slovakia is the ancient town of BARDEJOV, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Slovak towns. It was included in the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List in 2000. Bardejov has also a fitting nickname – “the most gothic town in Slovakia”.

The picturesque square with colorful burgher houses, the majestic Basilica Minor of St. Egidius, the Jewish suburb, the historic town hall, the Executioner's House, well-preserved city walls with bastions ... A huge number of valuable and remarkable monuments in a relatively small area. The city center is formed by the Town Hall Square surrounded on three sides by 46 burgher houses on narrow medieval plots. In the middle stands the Basilica Minor of St. Egidius, in front of which is located the original pair of bells Ján and Urban. The bells were originally placed in the bell tower of the Basilica’s tower. The old bells got damaged over time, so they were replaced by new castings. The Basilica of St. Egidius was built in the middle of the 14th century and contains a unique collection of 11 late Gothic winged altars. Feeling like climbing a flight of stairs? The tower of the basilica offers the most beautiful views of the city.

The urban planning assumptions of the market square in Rakoniewice were established at the end of the 17th century by the then town heir. It marked out a relatively large square measuring 112 × 120 meters, streets and plots.

The square was surrounded by wooden arcaded houses with gable or broken roofs, covered with shingles. Unfortunately, frequent fires eliminated entire lines of this development.

To this day, only 4 arcaded houses have survived (3 of them are visible in this photo), which testify to the history of the town. A contemporary fountain was built in the middle of the square. In the corner of market square is old Evangelical church there is a fire brigade museum.

Założenia urbanistyczne rynku w Rakoniewicach ustalił pod koniec XVII wieku ówczesny dziedzic miasta. Wyznaczył stosunkowo duży plac o wymiarach 112×120 metrów, ulice i działki.

I went back to my earliest digital photos. In 2005, I got my first digital point-and-shoot, a Canon Ixus 50 with a whopping 5 megapixels. I bought it specifically for the vacation this image is one of the first ones from. I used it until 2013 as it was so convenient to put it into my trouser pockets. Unluckily, it slipped from my pocket in that year on another vacation, never to be found again.

Seeing those images on a full HD screen with 1920 x 1080 pixels, they are fine. You just shouldn't zoom in more.

A few of my Flickr friends should recognize this place. If you do, please post in the comments, where exactly I was because I can't remember the locations anymore after all this years.

Fascinating distortion of reality with reflections where you'd expect facades and utter confusion whilst looking up this building next to London Bridge.

Shambles Square is a square in Manchester, England, created in 1999 around the rebuilt Old Wellington Inn and Sinclair's Oyster Bar next to The Mitre Hotel.

"Shambles" was a name originally used for a street of butchers shops where meat was slaughtered and sold. It is derived from the Middle English word schamel, which meant a bench, as for displaying meat for sale. A shambles would have had blood, pieces of meat and offal running down the gutter, and although the original meaning of the word fell into disuse, it survived as a word meaning a scene of disorder. There are also streets known as the Shambles in other towns in the United Kingdom, such as York, Stroud, Worcester, Sevenoaks, Chesterfield and Armagh, and a public house in Lutterworth which was once a butcher's shop and abattoir.
