We'd like to think once a year an old gran travels down to the farmer's market to sell her wares.
Somewhere deep in the Second Life wilds there is a little Forest Sprite.
It is shy and often found close to mushrooms, in fact, it is so close to them, that it has one growing out of its head. (There is no relation to the ones on The Last Of Us, this is just cute, and it won't eat your face off..)
It is shy but loves cuddles. The more the cuddles the safer Sprite feels and Aardvark knows the community can offer out the best cuddles.

- www.kevin-palmer.com - For over 10 years I've been trying to capture red sprites with no success. That is until this night when I caught not 1, but 16 over the course of an hour. The storm was 300-400 miles away in North Dakota/Minnesota.
Designed in 1914 by FLW for the MIdway Gardens in Chicago. Original sculptures were lost after the Midway Gardens were demolished, only to reemerge in 1945 after being "unearthed" in Wisconsin. A mold was cast of the "Solemn Sprite" by the request of Mrs. Wright, and from this six new Sprites were cast and gifted to the Biltmore in 1985.

3 separate squall lines over the SE Aegean sea, were producing TLEs all night long, during the night of Dec. 4, 2021. This one is from that night. Observe the inclination of the tendrils towards the top of the thundercloud. This inclination is dictated by the temporary, intensified electric field close to the cloud. TLEs appear, under specific circumstances, above active thunderstorms. On this night, more than 300 events were recorded. Surely one of the nights to remember. This car competed in the Equipe GTS race at the Aston Martin Owners Club's meeting at Oulton Park in May 2015. It's the 1965 Austin Healey Sprite Ashley GT driven in the 30 minute long race by Allan and Neil Cameron and has a 1,293cc engine.
Two consecutive images, each 10 seconds, are shown here as a composite. The Perseid meteor appeared at the end of the 1st exposure followed by the sprites event a second later. There is increasing evidence that meteors can trigger sprites as reported by sprites observers around the world. I captured another mutual event, although weaker, during this rather active thunderstorm complex to my north.
You can see the Double Star Cluster in Perseus at the top right of center (radiant point for the Perseids).
A sprite is a kind of fairy or elf. Sprite comes from the Latin word spiritus or spirit and once meant “soul” or “ghost.” Sprites are used in many folktales. Sprites are creatures of the element water. They are found only in places where it is serene and cool. They like to play with nymphs or torment butterflies, but the butterflies don’t really mind. Sprites have one very important job, which is going around and changing the colours of a tree’s leaves in Autumn. They have many cans of bright paint in every shade between red and yellow. This makes sure they don’t run out. Sprites are very creative. They are muses, artists, and poets. They are some of the most creative fairies. Some even decide to bond or marry a human or elf and stay with them their whole lives.
Another shot of a gorgeous Sprite damselfly - most likely either a Sedge Sprite (Nehalennia irene) or a Sphagnum Sprite (Nehalennia gracilis). Because of the black cap on the eyes, I am leaning towards Sedge Sprite... Observed at the Jardin botanique de Montréal.

I counted myself very lucky to bring even one of these little Sprites home, but I couldn't help pouncing when the chance came up to add two more!
Although this photograph was taken some time ago, from the box opening for the two newest arrivals, I wanted to get it posted and say that there is currently a pre-order open for these lovelies!
While I won't be participating in the Stone Sprite pre-order -- I must grudgingly accept that three is probably enough -- it's a great chance for someone else to get one of these adorable little dolls.

Happy 'Roid Week Day 4!
I like to think the forest sprites showed themselves on our drive through Arch Cape, Oregon in April.
During the night on the 27th of Oct. 2025, 102 TLEs* were observed over #thunderstorms at NE. Aegean Sea, close to Lesvos isl. and NW Turkey. This is a so called "Jellyfish" red sprite event (a term used by sprite-chasers). That is, a group of "carrot" sprites stacked together, creating a red "dome" on top and a "forest" of tendrils at the bottom. Some clouds can also be seen at the bottom end, where the tendrils are. My spot was at E. Attica, looking towards Evia's isl. mountains and NE Aegean Sea.
*TLEs (like red sprites) are upper atmospheric electrical discharges (cold plasma to be precise) and they appear, under specific circumstances, above thunderstorms (e.g. red sprites appear at altitudes of 40-90 km).
For this one, I've used a #Sigma 85 mm lens at f/1.4, for 1/25'' with 40 k iso.

L'apparition de ce magnifique "sprite" dans la nuit du 3 au 4 septembre 2022 me restera en mémoire. Quand il a flashé sur l'écran video 4K, j'ai failli loupé le bouton d'enregistrement tellement il m'a surpris par sa beauté... 😅
C'était un puissant éclair positif situé à environ 315 km du côté de Valence dans l'Est de la France qui a entrainé l'apparition de ce phénomène lumineux transitoire dans la haute atmosphère (entre 40 et 90 km d'altitude). On voit même la luminosité du coup de flash à l'horizon sur la photo.
Ces sylphes rouges/farfadets/sprites font quasiment 50 km de hauteur !!! La nature est fascinante.
L'appareil photo étant modifié "fullspectrum", on voit apparaitre quelques couleurs bizarres liées aux infrarouges dans le bas de l'image (teintes grises)
Et pour ceux qui se posent la question, un sprite apparait de façon très brève (1/10 sec) et c'est la plupart du temps invisible à l’œil nu...

Created over 2,000 years ago, this Barrier Canyon Style panel is probably one of the most famous in the San Rafael Swell. The panel is about 130 feet long. The glyphs were painted using powdered hematite and are upwards of four feet tall.
The Buckhorn Panel is easily accessible by car and requires no hiking. Consequently, over the years, it was repeatably vandalized. In 1996 the State of Utah and Emery County "restored" the panel.

I was very excited to see the Sprites out and about in the grasses. It was windy so hard ti get photos.....this one one of the few that was in focus.
I met a fancy firefly,
