Former display house site on Princes Highway Springvale for Swenrick Constructions - a company specialising in country transportable houses, small bungalows and granny flats. The company moved its base to a new site in Bayswater North.
By September 2013, most of the former display houses have been moved off site leaving the now-derelict and vandalised display office and two display houses awaiting removal - also now featuring unwanted murals on the front too.

Someone has been digging down to the old Main Adit of Cwmbran Colliery, bulldozed over by the council in the 1980s. Perhaps they are after the drams of coal left fully laden in there when the colliery closed (see below). If so, they still have to break down the ashlar wall! The curve of the arch can be made out. See link for picture of the adit.
When I was a child, a next door neighbour had worked on the very last shift in 1927; he told me how they were worked hard the whole shift filling the drams, knowing the coal was going nowhere. As they trooped out, the masons were already waiting to seal up the adit, including the fruits of their labours, which in all likelihood, are still there.

Description: On reverse handwriting reads 'Old store which was north of the present Glen Waverley Primary School'. See locale on Google Maps.
Wandering Around Waverley by Wyn Hattwell (1990) notes the following about Robert Tanner and his hardware store (pages 324-325):
"Robert Tanner Pty. Ltd. of Springvale Road, Glen Waverley, moved to 111 Kingsway, Glen Waverley and opened for business on 5th July, 1963. Mr Tanner had been in the hardware business for 27 years previously and had been in the Springvale address for six years. The old building's days were numbers and in 1963 the widening of Springvale Road was expected to see its demolition.
"Esso Oil planned a service station there as soon as problems connected with the road widening, the removal of the school crossing lights to a new position, etc., were overcome...
"Mr. Tanner was a member of the Waverley Chamber of Commerce and committee member of the Waverley Football Club."

In the 1960s, at the foot of this wall, a local family kept an allotment/smallholding here, known to locals as "Bugs' Prop". On top of the wall were foundations, probably for the colliery electricity sub station which have been absorbed into Greenmeadow Community Farm with all traces eradicated. It was a wonderful adventure playground in my childhood.
Cwmbran Colliery opened in 1837 at the Porthmawr Adit in Upper Cwmbran, also known as the Clay Level because of the excellent grade fireclay discovered there, causing an adjacent brickworks to be opened in 1839 to exploit it. In 1854 another adit, the Mineslope Adit was opened a little further up the mountain and in 1879 the Main Adit was opened in Springvale near the Cwmbran Iron Works (later GKN). The colliery closed in 1927 with the sealing of the Main Adit. The previous shift's entire output of coal was sealed in after the miners left the adit for the last time. A tramway system ran from the Mineslope Adit to Old Cwmbran where it linked up with the Cwmbran-Caerleon tramway which finished at the wharf on the River Usk.

Another change in management and a slight twist to the name. What's an extra 'e' among friends! The food is still good and very authentic though!

The former main gate
Opened in the late 1980's it had a small supermarket called 'Cheap'a Food Barn' and an Ollies restaurant as well as some shops and offices for AV Jennings. The Ollies became KFC before closing and the supermarket has long gone, replaced by an oddly located evangelical church (see the cross in the corner). The offices are now a reception centre.
Fast forward to 2012 and an Aldi supermarket is going up in the car park to the right of shot. Additional parking is being rebuilt here and behind this shot.

An e-scooter rider turning on to Springvale Way out of the industrial estate. These "vehicles" are illegal, there being no trial of them in operation in Cwmbran. No helmet or protective clothing, he was travelling at a reckless pace endangering himself and others. I have had a couple of narrow escapes with these being driven at speed down the pavement or canal path. And even if these people were to take out insurance it would be invalid anyone on a public road or footpath since the act of driving them is illegal. Kent Police have a vigorous policy in seizing these and crushing them; I wish Gwent Police would do the same.
Has no one thought also, about the fact we are encouraging a generation of people to grow up unfit and overweight through just standing on scooters expending no effort and deriving no exercise?
