A globular living in abundance on some sandy ground by the roadside (sand dumped after building work somewhere).
Springtails come in many different shapes and sizes. They are all associated with moist environments, and when they are discovered indoors, it is always the result of a problem with standing water, a leak or rotting wood. For some detailed information about Collembola see: www.collembola.org/
Springtails on acer leaf -Proisotoma minuta. The springtails seem to like playing king of the castle and concentrate on the leaf edges and tips. The leaves are in a compost bin. Springtails about 0.8mm body length max.
One scoop into the sand and Johann had several of these small (~2-3mm) springtails. Rather a bear for me to photograph in the field. I seriously need to work on my field macro techniques.

During warming temperatures at this time of year the snow can be covered with tiny black specks (1 – 2 mm long), resembling pepper sprinkled on the snow. If you watch them for a period of time, you'll see that these specks move -- leap, in fact -- a distance often several times their body length. These moving specks are called snow fleas, a species of springtail, not a type of flea. For that matter, they are not insects, but close relatives to arthropods, specifically crustaceans. During most of the year snow fleas live in the soil and leaf litter, consuming fungi, algae and decaying organic matter. On warm winter days they appear on the surface of the snow, often at the base of trees or in track indentations.
Their acrobatic prowess is achieved not with wings, which they lack, but with two tail-like spring projections, or furcula, which are held like a spring against the bottom of their abdomen by a kind of latch. When the snow flea wants to move, the latch is released and the furcula springs downward, catapulting the snowflea as far as 100 times its body length.
Snowfleas in the genus Hypogastrura possess three pinkish anal sacs which are usually located inside the snowflea, hidden from view. Just before jumping the snowflea everts these sacs from its anus. Their function has not been confirmed, but many biologists believe they serve as a sticky safety bag which prevents the snowflea from bouncing around when it lands.
The anti-freeze protein that allows snow fleas to be active at colder temperatures than insects is being studied in the hopes that they can be used to better store transplant organs.

A Dicyrtomina springtail. Note the worm-like vesicles extruded from the collophore (ventral tube); a multi-purpose organ on the underside of the first abdominal segment. These vesicles are being placed in the fluid film on a fallen leaf, to absorb moisture.

This little springtail was 0.5mm body length. Seems to have an eye spot. Walking on a compost bin lid (it is black)

Today when I took out my trash I passed a piece of bark at the base of one of my maple trees. I picked it up and spotted these Poduromorpha springtails feeding on the underside. These were the biggest Poduromorpha springtails I've found; there were several that were at least 3mm long. The orange one is Vitronura giselae, but I don't know what the gray ones are. I don't even know if they are all even the same species. Any ID help is always appreciated.

Testing out new setup. Canon EOS REBEL T5 with microscope adapter (no lens) attached to dissecting microscope, 4x magnification. The compound microscope image seems to be much more clear. I will have to work out the kinks or try a different dissecting scope.

These little springtails were on a sycamore back in March. There are still all over the tree. So tiny this is about the best I can do with getting a picture. Up close with a hand lens they are darn cute!
The smaller of two species of springtail which are unique to the Oregon Caves, it takes a keen eye to spot this thing in the wild. Easy to mistake for a piece of dirt or grime, this very much alive critter lives in pools within the cave.
Springtails and mites. I was surprised to see what looked like tiny shiny flies on the underside of a compost bin lid. Turned out they were small (baby?) springtails together with some mites

Not the first time I've seen these around here, but the first time I've found them under stones; usually they seem to be on plants.
