Finally got my MP-E back! Just in time for the springtails on the white wild flowers again. At first I thought they were not around yet, but then spotted some very small ones. This one must be between 1 and 2mms
Springtail, Tomocerus minor walking on water in a milk bottle top. I scooped it from the surface of a large water filled bowl in the garden.
Taken at 5:1 and cropped slightly - springtails about 1mm body length max. Trying to get pics of the hairs on the body for Frans to ID them
I'd been visiting friends in Devon and telling them about globular springtails. We were sat in a meadow, I looked for some and found this one pretty quickly. Wsn't around for long, which was a bugger. This was the best of the shots...

This is a tiny insect not seen very often but very important for our ecosystem and consuming decaying vegetable matter.
Named springtail due to them springing large distances when they are disturbed.
This is a tiny springtail, no more than1mm long. I found him on the underside of a leaf. these ones are so tiny if you take your eyes off them for a few seconds it's hard to spot them again.

Collembola (or springtails) grazing on a piece of rotting bench wood. I love to watch these guys. They are like cattle going about their business, but eating algae instead of grass. Also, if you startle a cow or get too close, it might look at you funny and maybe slowly walk away. If you get too close to a springtail, it SHOOTS itself into the sky, 100 times its body height, leaving its landing up to chance. They are fun to watch. I need better camera equipment for these little guys!

Not a great pic I know. It's more on here for ID and recording purposes while I try to get a decent shot. It has weird reflective qualities so it over and under-exposes at the same time. I won't be defeated.

I hope to learn if the setae can determine the sex for this species. I need help confirming the sex of these please.

Just trying out some more tubes to get a bit closer,it was 'turn over log' time in the back garden,lol
