roseate spoonbill - platalea ajaja

Norma did a superb job capturing the beauty of this handsome drake.

This is a medium-sized duck; smaller than a Mallard. Huge, spoon-shaped bill visible at a distance and in flight. Breeding males have dark green head, white breast, and chestnut sides and belly. Females buffy-brown with large, distinctive bill. Chalky-blue upperwing. Forages by sifting through the water, often swimming in spirals in groups.

"well i woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt"

"nooo, never land on a sunday. sundays are boring!"

I hope you are ready for some more bird shots...

Last year I didn't see a single Roseate Spoonbill and my goal was to get at least one shot of one. I think I took that one shot on December 28th. Yes, it was a close call. This year, they seem to be wherever I go... well almost. At one point there were at least 6 in one tree at the Alligator Farm.

This one liked to climb around in the big tree (if you have been to "The Farm", that's the tree where all the birds nest) and was walking and hoping from one branch to the next. Real fun to watch...

It looks a bit less messy when you view it on black or larger. Yes, BIGGER is BETTER!

Spoonbill Preening this morning at the St Augustine Alligator Farm.

A couple of were convinced that the spoonies at MINWR today were the most colorful we've seen... must be that there were so many in one place.

This Roseate Spoonbill was foraging in the shadows in the early morning at Green Cay yesterday. The sun was just beginning to illuminate the area when I took this picture.

At the time I photographed the Spoonbills there were three Ibis foraging in the shallow water just to the left of the tree! I always try not to spook birds at this time of the year and would prefer that they stick around it at all possible! One of the Spoonbills flew away from the perch and joined the Ibis searching for food! They are most definitely not birds of the feather!

I do try to capture the wing in the down stroke because IMHO it is the beautiful

especially if the lighting is right. After this post I will revisit this days shoot to see what else is there but this may be the end thank you all for the visit, much appreciated.

P.S. I like the neck position on the bottom one.

I liked how you could tell how deep the water was by the clean neck ring. Roseate Spoonbill

Caught this spoonie with its head above the water. These quirky birds are so colorful. The pose makes me think of Groucho Marx.

Saw 3 of them at sunrise there today. A close up reveals that they are tagged birds so can't really use the shots.

Have a great Sunday

Additional Info: Thanks Nal -- I called the Tropical Audobon and they told me this spoonie, tag 31B was tagged on 1/4/07 in NE Florida Bay near Tern Key as a baby. So it's still a juvenile. So cool.

is always the same!!! If that were me, I'd be flying real quick!!! Actually the first Roseate Spoonbill was just taking off!!!!

Lynn shot this Spoonie just as he got a little snack.

Roseate Spoonbill flashing me a profile on waters edge...

... one of the better moments of an otherwise overcast & uneventful early morning walk along the shore...

Stick Marsh

On a recent visit to the Stick Marsh I sighted about 3 dozen spoonies . Most of them were juveniles and fledglings happily foraging on a mud flat but as soon as a parent bird landed they would immediately revert to "chick" mode and harass that parent to "feed me". Tiring of the constant demands of their offspring and unable to feed the parent would often soon fly off with their offspring in hot pursuit.

The spoonbill will generally portray this behavior shortly before taking to flight.

Not an Egret at all but maybe a platypus duck. I can get pretty goofy at times and I’ll get on with things here. These Roseate Spoonbills are occasional visitor to the bayou and always a treat even though they are not as brilliantly colored as some. I always enjoy seeing them. The object just behind the Spoonie is just another chunk of the dying hyacinth and not a tennis ball. Hope everyone enjoys the Spoonbill. Photo was taken near the boardwalk at Bay Area Park, but I am still in the canoe.
