Ann Grout Spindles. Blue speckled turnip, and acorn.

These reproductions of medieval spindles were made by Eadric of Ironwood Pottery (the whorls) and Miguel of Spanish Peacock (the shafts). Since I had been attempting to handcarve my own shafts (and doing a poor job) I am delighted to have a few turned ones with suitable whorls. Usually when I buy Eadric’s work, I sit down and interrogate him as to the time and place of each reproduction I am buying, but I forgot to do this with these purchases.

Navajo ply (three-ply) hand spun done on my 1.5oz comet production spindle from Woolly Designs.com. The fiber is a Romney-Mohair blend from Lindenhof. This is the first bat that I've worked with, and so far it's great. I don't really notice a difference between working from a bat and working from roving.

My spindles.

The rustic one in the back is from the spinning class I took. The teacher teaches a lot of kids, and needs cheap & easy spindles for them.

These spindles pull the cotton off the stalk and it is forced thru a shoot and into the basket on top of the cotton picker.. sooo cool!

Spetchley Gardens Worcs

They caught my eye this afternoon.

Today I was going to do the walk I got wrong last week so I set off from home down the Cuckoo Trail to the Old Station at Hellingly and then along the roads to Magham Down then all footpaths to Cowbeech Hill ending up at Rushlake Green and then back home. It was a total of 19 miles and I saw very few people I had a really great day with odd little bits of rain but so much to see and so quite a few images from trees and deer to helicopters and Alpacas and the Cattle and houses. My longest walk to date but it's not easy to work out final distance from flat maps.

It just goes to show that you can make a spindle from anything..grin

Maple spindle gall is the trees reaction to the mite insect (Vasates aceriscrumena). Spindles are a bit over 1/4" in length. The spindles begin green and turn red or tan as they age. Despite their dramatic appearance this is mostly a cosmetic issue and not a threat to tree health.

Dave's signature leaf motif has been burn etched around the edges of the notched hard maple whorl of this beautiful drop spindle. The top of the whorl has been adorned with his rose and leaf motif. The overall length of this spindle is 9 inches, and it weights 1.3 ounces. A brass hook has been added to the purpleheart shaft.

The bit at the bottom is the Turnigy 550 watt motor fitted to the lump of 1.5" alloy bar, bored out to take the bearings etc. The spindle (in the middle) is an ER16 collet chuck. The bit at the top with the wires is the electronic speed controller for the motor. It's rated at 40 amps.

Navajo spindle - 80 cm long

wood: ancient oak from bordeaux wine vessel

Best spun in a little bowl - makes nice and very fine yarns - also bigger diameter yarns and suitable for plying too.

Orange batt, red moorit roving and carbonized bamboo, each spun as singles on a Ledbetter spindle, then plied together.

usually whenever I go to an art fair I look for big vases to store big spindles and support spindles. The vase in the back was a gift from my dad in-law.

lately my love of support spindle has grown exponentially, so they kind of need their own home. Due to summer graduate school I couldn't attend a lot of art fair this summer. Last Monday, hubby and I went to Dakota county fair to visit my submission to the fair. I won 2 blue ribbons under handspun category for both handspun yarn and handspun shawl. We also tried a homemade root beer thus the can from Bayou Billy. The vendor is there every year this is the first year we try it. We loved the taste. Not too sweet as some commercially made root beer.

So now the can is being used as a home for the support spindles. I put rice inside to help keep the support spindles stand.
