At the underground in Russell Square London.

I tried several panning shots handheld throughout the day. Many of them were too blurred but this came out pretty well. Probably because it was a bit slower than the other cars on the day.

“Art, speeding through limits, stopping for nothing” -anonymous

I selected this quote after driving home and getting frustrated at someone who passed me on route 99 one day going 15 miles over the speed limit (at which I was driving). I had already started to work on another quote by this time and I knew I would need to reshoot the images I had taken beforehand. Some of the images I had shot beforehand were at an antique store and the items were gone by the time I went back to reshoot, so I adopted this new quote instead. It just seemed perfect at the time. Finding the words was a very difficult process. Some simple words in my original quote such as “that” and “going” proved to be impossible to find anywhere and even after I changed to a simpler quote I still couldn’t find the word “through” at all either. Also, a lot of time when I could find the words they were small and the camera couldn’t focus on them. The letters had to be at least as big as my fist for my camera to focus on them which made getting good images very challenging. One of my few successes was when I realized that I didn’t have to find the entirety of a word. The print of the ending “ing” appears 3 times in my final image because it made it easier to find the root words. I was extremely lucky when I managed to find the word “art” with a comma after it as well because it made sense grammatically. If I were to redo this assignment I would definitely use a camera more able to focus on smaller text because even street signs were barely big enough to focus on. I would also start the assignment at least a week and a half earlier because it required so much time. Finally, I would pay much more attention to where in the frame the word is and what size it is in order to make the words fit together a little better. I did enjoy this assignment, though, overall because it had a cool idea behind it.

"Speeding smoothly along the autobahn in a superb, modern SELNEC coach" ; my how Kraftwerk. That said, I'd have loved to have seen one of SELNEC's finest in Germany! SELNEC, standing for South East Lancashire & North East Cheshire, was one of the first Passenger Transport Executives/Authorities formed under the 1968 Transport Act and it merged a variety of municipal operators in the region. In 1974, with boundaries extended, it became the Greater Manchester PTE.

SELNEC, determined one suspects to use a livery colour not one of their components woudl have ever considered and also to look 'modern' went for orange as the fleet colour and my, did it look bold back in the day. Whereas it might not have looked so cool on older vehicles of traditional design, it did look very good on new vehicles and indeed SELNEC/GMPTE had a srong corporate identity as the "Big Orange". I have to say I'm a bit sad that the new franchsied Bee Network now being rolled out in the region went for that insipid yellow and now the orange.

Anyhow, this leaflet from 1970 shows the range of buses and coaches available for hire and, unlike many municipal operators who were often severely restricted as to where private hire vehicles could wander, the world was SELNEC's oyster.

Perhaps this selfish idiot is now part of another shocking statistic!

The driver of this vehicle overtook me as I did exactly 50mph in a 50mph roadwork zone, monitored by average speed cameras. I would estimate that it was travelling at around 55-60mph.

.

Background information:

A section of long-term roadworks on the motorway with a 50mph speed restriction in force and monitored by average speed cameras. Due to the hard shoulder and part of lane 1 being blocked off, the three running lanes have all been narrowed, and there is only a couple of feet (c. 60cm) between vehicles travelling side-by-side.

Like myself, the majority of drivers observe the 50mph speed limit, which is in force in order to help ensure the safety of road users and workmen alike, as with vehicles travelling so close to each other there is an increased risk of collisions.

However, there are always a few (quite a few, it seems) drivers who regard the rules of the road as applying to everyone but them. These ignorant drivers travel through the restricted area in excess of the legally enforceable speed limit and in spite of the fact that their law-breaking is being measured and captured by the cameras. Do they really think that they will escape unpunished? Or are they displaying false registration plates, so they know they will not be held accountable for their inconsiderate and anti-social driving?

So I hereby present photographic identification of vehicles that passed me today as I drove along the restricted section of motorway at exactly 50mph (cruise control active). Thus, by default, each of these drivers was exceeding the legal speed limit and as such breaking the law.

Note: Images were captured using a camera fixed to the dashboard of my car and activated by way of a remote control unit attached to my steering wheel, thus allowing me to activate the camera without removing my eyes from the road ahead. The camera was configured to capture a wide field of vision, and images were cropped afterwards to centralise the relevant vehicles.

I was taking a photo, but a Caltrain got in the way.

One way to get a break from the silly speed limits roads here are infected with is to get one of these powerful radio controlled cars. Come across thwo guys having no mercy on their cars, suspects half the fun is to fix the cars. Sure was ok if I took a shot.

Trains that speed by are quite annoying when you are standing still. I hate waiting.

This is my family speeding home. I tried to run ahead and get a picture only to get the bus before me to stop to pick me up. This is the second try and I didn't get the focus right, but I like the expression of them all.

I find the topic "What Inspired Me Today" to be kind of difficult. I pretty much see it as sort of a freestyle kind of topic because I don't know what will inspire me or when it will happen. I tend to be inspired by other people's artwork, seeing what other people create tends to inspire me to create something of my own. I don't think it would be right for me to take pictures of someone else's art and post it as my own though.

For this particular post for the topic I included the road. I guess the street inspired me to take this shot, I drive quite a bit so sometimes seeing the world as I'm speeding by can inspire me to stop and take a look around. I decided to zoom in while I was taking the picture to create a sense of motion.

Ahahaha 40mph train, picture? nope ha
