Story continued from previous photo...
So there it was, just sitting on what was left of an old end table. Bloody to be sure, but neatly cut out and carefully placed...
a human tongue.
My first reaction was to disbelieve what I was seeing, but then I thought about where I was, and decided I should take another, more careful look. I even poked it with a stick to see if it felt...well, like you would expect a disembodied tongue to feel. Visually, it sure LOOKED real. It had that little line that runs down the middle...the proper texture...I wanted to explain it away as a prank or a fake, but an abandoned church in Gary, Indiana didn't seem quite like the kinda place where you would typically find kids playing harmless little tricks like this.
So...if this WAS real...who did it? And based on the condition of the blood, which was only partially congealed...were they still here? The second matter felt more pressing than the first at this point, and as I stood in the silent darkness, senses on high alert, I scanned the rest of the hall as more questions raced through my mind, like...where was the rest of the victim? Did he just walk out after being attacked, or did he
choke to death on his own blood, or simply die of blood loss? I shared these photos with a close friend who's a surgeon, and in his opinion, it's doubtful the victim survived, based on the amount of blood at the scene.
So I decided that if in fact the perps were still in the church, they would almost certainly already know I was there, and if they intended to attack me, they would almost certainly have already done so. So I decided it was more likely they were already gone, and since I had flown across the country to photograph this place (among others), I decided I'd go ahead and at least make the main photograph I'd had in mind before leaving. I did so, and as I settled in, I decided to go ahead make several other photos in the church, since I was there, including these two images of what appeared to be a violent crime scene.
No matter how you slice it (pardon the pun), it was a rather startling way to begin a weekend of crawling through abandonments in Gary and Chicago.

The only word that I can use to explain this movie, just go see it, I could go on all day about how beyond amazing it was, but once you see it, I won't have to.

I took this photo of this little parakeet (or was it a parrot?) from the Jurong Bird Park. I was hoping it would belt out one helluva screech so I could shoot it with it's beak wide open. One, two, three minutes. Not even once. So I made do with this.
