Opened in 1970 by the government of the State of Alabama, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center features numerous exhibits and artifacts telling the story of the American space program, from the pop culture influence of space exploration to the future of space flight. A life-sized model of a Saturn V rocket dominates the landscape, while the actual Saturn V dynamic test vehicle, the prototype used to ‘shake test’ the rocket’s components during development. The orbiter Pathfinder, a metal and wood mock-up used for early tests of the Space Shuttle’s assembly and transport facilities, sits atop a full build including external tank and solid rocket boosters.
