This 32x32 bignette was a part of the WindyCityLUG Home On A Hill (HOAH) project - a seed part challenge to build a microscale environment using the Baseplate, Raised 32 x 32 Canyon.

It all culminated in a premiere event at a member's cookie party where all were displayed for the first time. Everyone did such a great job and brought a unique flavor to all of their builds. Mine is a futuristic urban life on Neptune.

Completed in Dec. 2019. Nominated for Best Microscale at Brickworld Chicago 2022.

Sharpless 157, also known as the Lobster Claw Nebula, is a bright emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia. It is located about 11,000 light-years away.

Just south is the better-known Bubble Nebula, NGC 7635. The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot, 8.7 magnitude young central star. It is located about 9,100 light-years away.

Within this image are a few other objects. NGC 7510 is an open cluster of stars just above and left of the Lobster Claw. NGC 7538 is an emission nebula center left of the image. Both these objects are in the constellation Cepheus which borders the Cassiopeia constellation.

A wide field view of the Lagoon Nebula (M8, Messier 8 or NGC 6523), a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. The Lagoon Nebula is estimated to be between 4000 - 6000 light-years from Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy, and is classified as an emission nebula.

About Emission nebulae:

Emission nebulae are glowing clouds of interstellar gas which have been excited by some nearby energy source, usually a very hot star. The red light seen in this picture is glowing hydrogen captured in the Hydrogen-Alpha (Hα) Infrared wavelength of light at 656nm.

About this image:

A few short 2 minute ISO 3200 exposures, imaged in the rural dark skies of the Waterberg, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

About the Star Colors:

You will notice that star colors differ from red, orange and yellow, to blue. This is an indication of the temperature of the star's Nuclear Fusion process. This is determined by the size and mass of the star, and the stage of its life cycle. In short, the blue stars are hotter, and the red ones are cooler.

Original landscape photography captured with an Olympus E-600 camera, mounted with its kit lens, in October 2013.

I was wondering what to do with this shot, taken at the back of the old cemetery, in Wimborne, Dorset. I knew it would be a good backdrop for something. Recently, I've been collecting images of mannequins and have been developing some ideas for composite images.

Composite elements assembled and edited in GIMP. Further editing in LR5.

Fascinated by the light.

The Eastern Veil Nebula

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus, a supernova remnant and part of the Cygnus Loop. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than our Sun, which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. NGC 6992 is around 2,400 light-years from Earth and is expanding at a velocity of about 1.5 million kilometers per hour.

The freshly pressed vinyl record for The Astronot film by musician Pennan Brae sits amongst the cherry blossoms 🌸. The soundtrack streams on Spotify & Apple Music via the profile link if interested!

The Summer Milky Way from Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, 2024-07-08

These are test images to use as part of my Photoshop post processing training sessions.

Image 1 is a stack 13 images. 9X20 seconds for the sky and 4X4 minutes for the foreground. This image shows the power of long exposures for pulling details from the very dark foreground.

Image 2 is 71 images. All exposed for the sky, 71X20 seconds. This image illustrates the SNR (signal to noise ratio). The more images you stack, the more signal you reveal. The intricate details of the Milky Way's core, including the dust lanes and the hydrogen-alpha emission nebulae, truly stand out.

Image 2 also captured two early Perseid meteors during the 25 minutes of exposures. The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle that are usually visible from mid-July to late-August. Watch for Perseids around the next new moon Sunday Aug 4.

Album cover for ‘Gravity’, the new album from ‘The Astronot’ film. You can stream the album via Spotify or Apple Music if interested!

This one was fun to create. Painted a crude landscape on a translucent baking dish and then messed with it using a laser pointer and double long exposures.

The very bright Tarantula Nebula (also known as 30 Doradus or the Doradus Nebula) is an H II region in the very dense Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The Tarantula Nebula is the most active starburst region known in the Local Group of Galaxies.

About this image:

This wide field image consists of 12 x 2 minute exposures at ISO 3200. Photographed in the rural skies of the Freestate, South Africa. The LMC was still lower on the horizon at my Latitude than is recommended for Astrophotography (due to the additional Atmospheric Seeing and Light Pollution), but I couldn't resit taking a few photos through the trees. This beautiful Deep Sky Object is definitely worth revisiting and shooting longer Narrowband exposures in the Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) and Oxygen III (OIII) wavelengths of light when it is at a better position in the sky.

Third, last and rarest Space Art album.

1980 French pressing on Carrère/Waves label.

For the past few weeks, Mark Radice and I have been working on an astronomy sketching collab video, in which we both sketched the same objects but I did mine from photos, he did his at the eyepiece. We then got together to compare notes and have a discussion about sketching in general. The video is now live on my You Tube channel if you're interested in watching it: youtu.be/O8C3R176qm8

This sketch was copied from a photo taken by Yovin Yahathugoda - used with kind permission. I used a white pastel pencil and Posca acrylic paint pen for the stars, then the nebulosity was added by scrapping pastel dust onto my page and blending with a dry fluffy brush. The timelapse of me creating this sketch will be coming soon!

This sketch was created for some very good friends of mine. It was a wedding present and it shows the Moon on their wedding day. I usually do my almost Full Moon sketches in black and white but I decided to add some subtle colours into this one, showing the different basalt composition colours.

I used black paper and Stabilo CarbOthello pastel pencils. Blending was with cotton buds and blending stumps.

This gift has now been opened by the happy couple so I can share the photo and creation video. To view the timelapse video click here: flic.kr/p/2nU14rd

After working on some pictures, I decided to start a project mixing digital art and image composition, inspired by classic science fiction comics, I will create these look-a-like movie posters, I'm excited about the results mixed with typography it really takes them to another level, perhaps I'll be selling prints or make an exhibition of this, who knows? Stay tuned

This spray paint & acrylic marker piece titled "Alien Kiss" was created on a durable cardboard sign. The big planet in the middle represents the eye of a large alien with black lips. Sitting on the lower black lip is a pink alien head kissing the bigger alien. Left of the piece you'll see what looks like an green olive pizza. An encrypted looking alien language will be seen throughout. Purchase Prints @ bit.ly/alienkiss

TO THE READER

This book, SPACE PILOTS, is the second of a series on Adventure in Space. This series is the story of the rocket age in which Man will pierce the atmosphere and conquer the open space beyond it. This age is going to come much sooner than most people realize, and some of you who read this will take an active part in it. Here you will learn about the people who will fly the rocket ships.

Some of you may be among those who will be trained for this task. – Willy Ley

The depicted pinwheel space station uses rotational force to produce artificial gravity, but it never materialized. As a result, NASA had to create a strict exercise regimen for the astronauts in space to lessen the harmful effects of long-term microgravity on the human body. Now, Elon Musk is reviving the pinwheel/rotational force concept for the artificial gravity starship he plans to build for the journey to Mars.
