Awarded to Soviet service personnel who were on active service during The Great Patriotic War (Military service of 3 months or civil service of 6 months).
Date of creation 9 May 1945
On 9 May 1999 a Soviet War Memorial was unveiled in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park by the Secretary of State for Defence George Robertson, and the Russian ambassador Yuri Fokine.
The date of the unveiling was significant as 9 May is marked as Victory Day in Russia.
Since its inauguration the memorial has been the site of commemorations of Victory Day, Holocaust Memorial Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Cover of the booklet Armour in Profile no.9 published by Profile Publications in 1967 which included technical details and the history of the vehicle's development together with a good number of black and white photos.
Possibly the most famous tank of WWll it originally had a 76.2mm gun but later models had an 85mm gun. Its sloping armour gave better protection allowing shells to bounce off and not get trapped in any angles in its armour. Its success forced the Germans to rethink their tank design,
The 1986 World Exposition on Transportation and Communication, better known as Expo '86, in Vancouver, Canada. The Soviet pavillion had this huge statue of the first man to orbit the earth, Yuri Gagarin, at its entrance. No comment on the sculptor's decision to have Yuri's arms posed in the (surrender?) position seen above.

Vogelsang used to be more than just a Soviet military base. This place used to be a city filled with secrets and soldiers, but today it lays empty in Brandenburg while it rots away in the middle of a forest.
This is the place that a friend and we decided to spend a cold October morning back in 2016. We decided to use some remaining days off to go explore some abandoned places around Berlin. First, we went hunting for Lenin Statues in Fürstenberg. Then we took our cameras to Vogelsang after reading an article on Abandoned Berlin.
Arriving there early in the morning wasn't a problem. We met in Südkreuz and carried our bikes to the district known as Zehdenick. You can take the regional train RB12 there and stop at the Vogelsang Bahnhof. You will be close enough to this former Soviet military base.
From the train station, we cycled through a Christmas tree forest and, after a hundred meters or so, we found the abandoned road that leads to the Vogelsang Kaserne.
