One of the oldest monasteries in Bhutan built in the C7 by the Tibetan King Songsten Gampo. The story goes that a giant demoness lay across the whole area of Tibet and the Himalayas and was preventing the spread of Buddhism. To overcome her, King Songtsen Gampo decided to build 108 temples, which would be placed on all the points of her body. Of these 108 temples, 12 were built in accordance with precise plans. Thus, it happened that in about the year AD 638 the temple of Jokhang in Lhasa was built over the very heart of the demoness (wikipedia).

The Jokhang also called the Jokang, Jokhang Temple, Jokhang Monastery or Tsuklakang (gTsug lag khang), is located on Barkhor Square in Lhasa. It was built during the reign of king Songsten Gampo (605?-650 CE) to celebrate his marriage with Chinese Tang Dynasty princess Wencheng, who was a Buddhist.

During the Bon period of Tibet the temple was (and sometimes still is), called the 'Tsuklakang' (Tsulag Khang) — 'House of Religious Science' or 'House of Wisdom.' The term tsuklak refers to the 'sciences' such as geomancy, astrology, and divination which formed part of the pre-Buddhist shamanistic religion now referred to as Bon. It is more commonly known today as the Jokhang, which means the 'House of the Buddha'.

For most Tibetans it is the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. It is in some regards pan-sectarian, but is presently controlled by the Gelug school.

Along with the Potala Palace, it is probably the most popular tourist attraction in Lhasa. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace," and a spiritual centre of Lhasa.

The Barkhor is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet.

The Barkor was the most popular devotional circumabulation for pilgrims and locals. The walk was about one kilometre long and encircled the entire Jokhang, the former seat of the State Oracle in Lhasa called the Muru Nyingba Monastery, and a number of nobles' houses including Tromzikhang and Jamkhang. There were four large incense burners (sangkangs) in the four cardinal directions, with incense burning constantly, to please the gods protecting the Jokhang. Most of the old streets and buildings have been demolished in recent and replaced with wider streets and new buildings. According to the International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet, these modifications were performed by Chinese authorities to control political demonstrations, as the narrow streets allowed Tibetans to escape police gunfire.

The Barkor became touristic in the 80', and it therefore became the place of demonstrations of Tibetan monks and nuns requesting Freedom for Tibet. This is where Ngawang Sangdrol, Phuntsog Nyidron and Ngawang Phulchung were arrested after their demonstrations. During the 2008 unrest in Tibet, a demonstration happened March 11, and after the monks were beaten by the police forces, riots have burst in Lhasa and buildings of the Barkhor were burned by rioters.

Jokhang Monastery or Tsuklakang, is the first Buddhist temple in Tibet. It was built during the reign of king Songsten Gampo (639-647 CE) to celebrate his marriage with Chinese Tang princess Wencheng, who was a Buddhist. Princess Wencheng has chosen Jokhang to protect the sacred image of Jowo Sakyamuni, the most precious and revered image of Buddha in Tibet. Because the temple is not controlled by a particular sect of Tibetan Buddhism it attracts adherents of all the sects as well as followers of Bon-Po, Tibet's indigenous religion. During the "cultural revolution" many of the statues were destroyed but major part was carefully remade to to resemble its original appearence.

This is a musical extravaganza about the story of Princess Wenchang journey from China to Tibet more than a thousand years ago to marry King Songsten Gampo. Crossing deserts, hailstorms, and snow-capped mountains, she brought the peaceful teachings of Buddhism to Tibet. With her gentleness, wisdom and compassion, she captured the hearts of many in the land of snows. And she has left behind her legacy in the world famous Potala Palace in Lhasa.

Not from our trip, but I couldn't resisting this picture of our new cat Pierce. Isn't he gorgeous?

Introduction

Richard and I spent a fascinating two weeks in China and Tibet from October 17 to November 1, 2007. Thank you to Anne Chisham of Anglican Tours, who put together our wonderful itinerary; the entire trip went like clockwork. We had perfect weather the entire time, only got slightly and briefly sick, and suffered no ill effects from the altitude of Tibet.

While we weren’t in Tibet the entire time, Tibetan culture was definitely the focus of the trip. We visited about a dozen different temples, monasteries and palaces, and while each was unique in its way, of course, they also had some common characteristics:

 White, unadorned stucco walls

 Ornate, often gold rooftops

 Dimly lit interiors, elaborately decorated in bright colors and gold, with natural light from small windows and yak butter candles

 Multiple images of Buddha in various manifestations, usually with piles of paper money offerings in front

The trip was something of a course in Tibetan Buddhism, although our informants imparted more historical information than spiritual precepts. Tibetan Buddhism differs from other flavors in that it took on aspects of a pre-existing local animist religion called Bön. In the 7th century A.D., the 33rd king of Tibet, Songsten Gampo was converted to Buddhism by two of his wives, one Indian and one Chinese, who were both Buddhist. The fifth Dalai Lama, called “The Great Fifth”, from the 17th century, was the first to combine both temporal and spiritual leadership. He also sponsored the development of the Tibetan alphabet, and the translation of Buddhist scriptures into Tibetan.

“Dalai Lama” means “ocean of compassion”, and he is considered to be a reincarnation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. (A bodhisattva is a being who has achieved nirvana – true enlightenment – but has returned to earth to try to help relieve suffering.) The present Dalai Lama, who is the 14th of that name, currently lives in Daramsala, India. He left Tibet in 1959, just before the arrival of Chinese troops. The 2nd holiest lama is the Panchen Lama (“panchen lama” means “ocean of wisdom”), who is considered to be the reincarnation of the Manjushri, the bodhisattva of insight. His latest reincarnation was only recently discovered, and the 18-year-old lives as the “guest” of the Chinese government in Beijing.

China considers Tibet to be part of China, and the Chinese government is working actively to homogenize Tibetan culture. Tibetans, on the other hand, consider themselves to be a separate country, and wish for the return of the Dalai Lama. The Tibetans we encountered seemed to be happy, and I suspect that the influence of the Chinese has spurred economic activity and promoted a higher standard of living in Tibet – whether that higher standard of living is actually available to most Tibetans is another question – but I’m sure we all think that people should have the right to determine their own form of government. The current government in China seems to be less restrictive than previous ones, but the Tibetans we encountered did not feel free to speak openly, and we were told that it was forbidden to display pictures of the Dalai Lama.

If anyone reading this would like to read further on the subject, let me know. I can provide some references.
