Hungry for Solutions by Universities at Shady Grove

USG was excited for the opportunity to host the "Hungry for Solutions Expo" as part of our Civic Engagement Series.

The expo featured a competition with proposals from student teams seeking to end hunger in Montgomery County, as well as info sessions with local nonprofit organizations. Each team received grant money to help put their proposals into action.

The panel of judges included professionals from Marriott, Sodexo, Les Dames d'Escoffier, the Montgomery County Food Security Collaborative and the Community Food Rescue.

North window of the north transept, mostly reglazed after the previous window was lost to wartime bombing. The window has been the focus of some controversy for commemorating Edward Colston, city benefactor but also slave owner. The inscriptions have been covered but what is the long term solution? We could of course have something far more vibrant by a contemporary artist take its place though the cost would be prohibitive (and the topmost tracery roundel by Arnold Robinson is worthy of retention whatever happens).

Originally founded as an Augustinian abbey in 1140, Bristol Cathedral has had a more chequered history than most, having only been elevated to a diocesan church in 1542 following the dissolution of the monastery. At the time it was granted cathedral status the church was also incomplete, a major rebuilding of the nave was underway but the Dissolution brought work to a halt and the unfinished parts were demolished. The new cathedral was a truncated church consisting of choir, transepts and central tower, (already on a smaller scale than many) and so it remained until the Victorian period when renewed interest in the Middle Ages reignited the desire to rebuild the nave. The work was done between 1868-77 to the designs of architect George Edmund Street (largely imitating the genuine medieval architecture of the choir) whilst the west front with its twin towers wasn't finished until 1888 (to the design of J.L.Pearson). Only then was Bristol cathedral a complete church again, after a gap of more than three centuries.

Architecturally this is also a rather unique building in England, since it follows the German pattern of a 'hall-church' where the main vessel (nave & choir) and the side aisles are all of the same height, thus there is no clerestorey and the aisle windows rise to the full height of the building. Externally this gives the building a rather more solid, muscular look, whilst within there is a greater sense of enclosed space, with the columns merging into the vaulted ceilings like trees sprouting branches. There are many striking architectural innovations here that don't seem to have been repeated elsewhere in 14th/15th century England, such as the distinctive designs of the choir aisle vaults which appear to rest on pierced bracings and the 'stellate' tomb-recesses punctuating the walls below. Further eccentric touches can be found in some of the side chapels of the eastern arm. Another unique feature is the fact the cathedral has two Lady Chapels, the major one being below the east window behind the high altar, whilst a further chapel (one of the earliest parts of the church) is attached to the north transept.

Beyond its impressive architectural features the cathedral contains much of interest, with its late medieval choir stalls surviving along with a few much restored elements of its 14th century glass (along with an interesting mixture of windows from later centuries) and several monumental tombs of note. Parts of the monastic complex remain too, with two sides of the cloister remaining and the superb Norman chapter house (one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture and carving in the country with some wonderfully rich-non-figurative decoration).

हर समस्या का निवारण करते हैं सूर्यदेव

वेदों के अनुसार सूर्यदेव प्रत्येक समस्या के निवारण में सबसे अधिक सहायक हैं। किसी को अगर कोई परेशानी होती है तो उसे दूर करने के लिए ज्योतिष भी सूर्य भगवान की पूजा अथवा प्रात: काल में सूर्य को जल देने को सर्वाधिक उत्तम बताते हैं।

इसके बहुत से वैज्ञानिक कारण भी हैं लेकिन वेदों के अनुसार माना जाता है कि सूर्यदेव के छह पुत्र और तीन पुत्रियां हैं। माना जाता है कि सूर्यदेव की पूजा के साथ ही ये सभी देव भी स्वयं प्रसन्न हो जाते हैं, जिसके चलते मनुष्य की हर समस्या का तुरंत निवारण हो जाता है।

सूर्यदेव के पुत्र और इनके कर्म

1. वैवस्वत मनु : ये श्राद्ध देव हैं। ये पितृ लोक के अधिपति हैं। ये ही पितृों को तृप्त करते हैं। इन्हीं ने भूलोक पर सृजन का कार्य किया था।

2. यम धर्मराज : आमतौर पर लोग इन्हें सिर्फ यमराज के नाम से ही जानते हैं पर ये समस्त देवताओं के मध्य यम धर्मराज के नाम से पुकारें जाते हैं। इन्हें मृत्यु का देवता भी कहा जाता हैं। जीवन और मृत्यु इन्हीं के नियंत्रण में हैं। ये काल रूप माने जाते हैं।

3. शनि देव : ये न्याय प्रिय हैं स्वभाव से, ये कभी किसी के साथ अन्याय नहीं होने देते हैं और इसीलिए इन्हें दंडाधिकारी भी कहा जाता है। ये भगवान सूर्य की दूसरी पत्नी छाया से उत्पन्न हुए थे।

4. भाग्य देव : इनकी पितृभक्ति से प्रसन्न हो कर भगवान सूर्य नारायण ने इन्हें वरदान दिया कि ये जिससे चाहे कुछ भी ले सकते हैं और जिनको चाहे कुछ भी दे सकते हैं। ये भगवान सूर्य की पहली पत्नी संज्ञा से उत्पन्न हुए थे।

5. अश्विनी कुमार : ये देवताओं के वैद्य हैं। इनके पास शरीर से जुडी हर समस्या का समाधान है। ये भी भगवान सूर्य की पहली पत्नी संज्ञा से उत्पन्न हुए थे।

6. सावर्णि मनु : ये भगवान सूर्य की पत्नी छाया के गर्भ से उत्पन्न हुए थे और चौदह मन्वन्तर में से एक हुए।

सूर्यदेव की तीन पुत्रियां

1. यमुना देवी : यह नदी शांत नदी है। इस नदी का वेग भी सामान्य है। इस नदी में स्नान करने से यम की प्रताड़ना से मुक्ति मिलती हैं।

2. तापती देवी : यह नदी यमुना देवी से स्वभाव में विपरीत है। इस नदी का वेग तीव्र है और स्वभाव से प्रचंड है। इस नदी में स्नान करने से पितृगड़ तृप्त होते हैं और शनि के साड़े साती से निजात मिलती हैं। और दोनों ही मोक्षदायनी नदी है।

3. भद्रा : शनि की तरह ही इसका स्वभाव भी क्रूर बताया गया है। इस उग्र स्वभाव को नियंत्रित करने के लिए ही भगवान ब्रह्मा ने उसे कालगणना या पंचाग के एक प्रमुख अंग करण में स्थान दिया। जहां उसका नाम विष्टी करण रखा गया। भद्रा की स्थिति में कुछ शुभ कार्यों, यात्रा और उत्पादन आदि कार्यों को निषेध माना गया। किंतु भद्रा काल में तंत्र कार्य, अदालती और राजनैतिक चुनाव कार्य सुफल देने वाले माने गए हैं। भद्रा देवी श्यामवर्णी हैं जिनके केश सदैव ही खुले रहते हैं नयन ताम्रवर्ण के शरीर पर मुण्ड की माला धारण किए रहती हैं।
