The tablet overlay for AutoCAD R12

I received an email from a coworker about a retiring professor trying to retrieve data off of old computers. Our central IT was unable to assist due to the age of the machines. The professor was trying to move files from a Mac OS X 10.2, 10.4, and NeXT computer. My heart skipped a beat after that reading that last one. Moving the vintage Mac files would be no problem because I keep those tools handy. I restore vintage Apple //, Macintosh, and other hardware as a hobby.

If you don't know what a NeXT computer is, it's this insanely expensive computer built by Steve Jobs after he was ousted from Apple in the 1980's. It ran Unix, had a gorgeous graphical user interface, and if you use OS X today it is still the foundational basis for the operating system. It was lightyears ahead of anything else out there at the time. Have you ever visited a website before? The first webpage was served on a NeXTcube.

I've never seen a working NeXT computer before though. I saw one in Berlin in a museum and read about them extensively, but I had no idea that our university actually had them.

I immediately went to the professor's office and he showed me what he was trying to do. We talked a little bit about vintage hardware and I told him that I'd never seen a working NeXT before. I was a little hesitant to respond because day-to-day we're flooded with tickets IT support isn't really my thing. Sometimes users, especially tenured professors, need a delicate approach because of their demands. This person could not have been more affable, kind, and good hearted. After talking a while he said he would rather have the hardware saved than go to scrap per university policy.

In the interest of archiving his data and this magnificent hardware I will be cooperating with him to save this NeXT computer. I've also agreed to save the Mac Cube and Power Macintosh G3. Twist my arm. They'll become archive computers if anyone needs a WordPerfect 3.5 file converted. Yes, people still have those.

I decided to document everything in place before moving it all to a secure location. That includes the NeXT computer, original manuals, flyers, software, printers, accessories, and even the original boxes.

The plan is to document EVERYTHING in detail. So stay tuned for future updates.

Engineering Director Shawn Quinn speaks during a banner signing event April 22, 2019, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, to mark the accomplishments of the Kennedy engineering team that supported the Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Subsystem Software development. This team includes the software leads, local developers, remote developers, modelers, project engineers, software quality assurance, build team members, integrators, system engineers, a chief engineer and some software managers. There are 60 unique instances of GSE Subsystem Software code. As of today, 58 of those 60 instances have completed software Level 5 Verification (L5V) and are in the process of completing Subsystem Verification & Validation. Photo credit: NASA/Cory Huston

Cloud based management Software

There are many schools and colleges that still use the traditional methods of data maintenance by keeping old registers that might get lost.

This can lead to loss of valuable school records and create inconsistency and could make all related records worthless. Not only the human errors, can loss of school data also occur regardless of any human intervention. Records kept in an old storage room could fall prey to rats or there could be accidents such as a fire that can instantly destroy all the files.

So it’s extremely important to switch to a cloud-based management system so that schools and colleges can function seamlessly.

Skugal Cloud based Features

Skugal ERP is cloud-based and heavily uses Artificial Intelligence for its unique features that provide the school total control over transportation and management of teachers, drivers and students. The data gets backed up on online servers and since there are no physical records, they are not susceptible to accidents such as fires or get damaged by rodents. There are a variety of features that are facilitated by having our ERP on the cloud. The attendance record is saved safely on the cloud and is constantly updated in real-time. iTracking uses the cloud so that location keeps getting updated in every Skugal application therefore providing real-time location updates of the bus.

Jumping Jupiter

Photographed through my telescope. Hundreds of video images stacked and processed with software to exhibit details.

Equipment: Meade LX-90 telescope, Philips ToUcam 640x480 webcam, 26mm lens, camera adapter, Registax software, Photoshop Elements.

About Jupiter....

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, more than 11 times the size of Earth. It is over 483 million miles from the sun and takes 12 years to complete its orbit around the sun.

Although Jupiter is far away, it is a relatively easy target to find and observe with a telescope. It is visible for five months at a time. Then for three months it slips behind the sun and it cannot be seen at all.

Because Jupiter is a fast-spinning planet if you observe it carefully through a telescope for several hours you may see the atmosphere change during the viewing session.

However, you can't see Jupiter's surface. That's because Jupiter's atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium and is impossible to see through.

What you can see, through a medium- to large-aperture scope is a huge atmospheric storm that has been raging on Jupiter's surface for hundreds or even thousands of years.

This giant storm appears as a massive red spot on the globe.

This storm is so large that two Earths could fit in it. If you look closely at the photo accompanying this you will see the spot in the lower left corner.

Other worthwhile targets for amateur astronomers are Jupiter's moons.

Jupiter has 16 moons. When the planet is visible you may see one or more of Jupiter's four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. The others are too small to be seen without a large astronomical instrument.

Some people with very good eyesight claim they can see Jupiter's largest moons with their naked eyes. However, most of us need a telescope.

Photograph was shot with a webcam attached to the eyepiece of my Meade telescope. hundreds of webcam images were "stacked" in a computer program to enhance details.

June 11, 2016 - Showed my young neighbor Joseph Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and the Moon last night (he is around 12). This was the first time he ever observed Jupiter, Mars or Saturn through a scope. I showed him the moon on other occasions. His funniest comment was when he looked at the bands on Jupiter. his comment was, "It looks like bacon."
