It’s the start of the school day in this school in northern Burkina Faso.

Children are swarming in to main entrance of the school, before it is time to line up and make their way into their classrooms.

Here, EU funding is helping Educo – a Spanish NGO specialised in providing education to children caught up in humanitarian crises – give forcibly displaced pupils access to education.

The projects works at strengthening the capacity of schools to take in displaced pupils, train teachers and other school staff, and create safe, protective, inclusive educational spaces for children that promote their learning.

Last weekend was race weekend in Ottawa, it is a huge event the largest in Canada. I was standing on the roadway about 1000 metres from the finish line hoping to grab something exciting. Along came Kathy and we struck up a conversation, she was very easy to talk to on a variety of subjects. I told Kathy about the 100 Strangers project and she was more than willing to have her picture taken. I took a couple of close ups and another opening up the frame, Kathy was very co-operative.

Kathy has lived all her life in Ottawa, she is now semi-retired but teaches English as a second language on an occasional basis. In her earlier career Kathy was a Translator and a Social Worker. She loves Ottawa (in spite of the winter) and keeps herself fit by walking everyday. Kathy donned her sunglasses and sun hat and said goodbye.

Kathy it was a real pleasure meeting you, thank you for taking the time out of your day to chat and pose for some photographs. I am sure our paths will cross another day. I emailed Kathy the pictures and a link to the 100 Strangers Project, she responded that she was happy with the pictures and found the project very interesting.

Kateryna is a social worker and head of the humanitarian centre in the village of Zhovanka, Donetsk region. “I personally take care of 20 people, all of them with low mobility. They almost never leave their houses," she says.

The social worker helps with everything she can: buying and delivering groceries, medicines and hygiene products. "I cannot tell you how much easier my work has become with the bicycle. Delivering heavy packages, but even just going around and checking on people, comforting them with simple human attention… it got so much easier. I also feel very much supported and encouraged myself.”

I took this today around 7:15 am looking down the clinic waiting area all was calm, not a soul in sight with my iphone. But just 15 minutes later this area would be filled up with members of the clinic serving those members of the Canadian Forces who had medical appointments, waiting to pick up a prescription, those on "sick parade" waiting for medical attention, military members going for dental appointments or physiotherapy.

Such is the life of a Canadian Forces Health Services Centre. One stop shopping as it were to keep our military members healthy and service ready both physically and mentally. We are proud to house a Dental Clinic in our new building, a state of the art physiotherapy clinic, a mental health services centre, an opthamologist, a labratory, XRay deparment and a pharmacy. Ensuring that our patients are healthy and taken care of is our goal.

The services given by our medical staff is, if not comparable, far exceeding some of the local health facilities that are in the public. Our Doctors are "real doctors". Yes, they have years of medical school behind them and are licenced physicians in the Province of Ontario and in provinces throughout the country as well. Our Nurses are real nurses. They have completed university nursing and some have their masters in nursing. Our medical technicians are dedicated beyond and the care they give to their fellow soldiers is exceptional.

Our electronic health records is a first in the country and one that I am sure that our provincial counterparts would be envious to have.

We have numerous civilian physicians, nurse practioners, pharmacists, social workers and civilian support services personnel in the clinic.

We are an accredited health services centre having met all the accrediations that any civilian facility would have to meet by the Government of Canada.

I am proud to work side by side with these professionals and honoured to call them more than colleagues but friends and family.

This one is dedicated to the far too many parents I know/have heard of who have had their kids taken away from them because they were wrongly accused of having Munchausen by Proxy. I'm very fortunate to have never been a child in this situation, but there are far too many who are.

Basically, Munchausen by Proxy is when someone in care of a child/children - a parent, babysitter, etc. - purposefully hurts the child(ren) for the purpose of "saving" them after to become the "hero," and/or to get sympathy/benefits, etc. In other words, HORRIBLE.

But it is equally as horrible to have children with EDS - sick children - being taken away from loving parents because they have many more bruises and injuries than the average kid.

I know that child abuse is horrible and in true child abuse cases social workers have to work quickly, but there is devastating mental and emotional damage done to both children and parents when kids are wrongly taken away. As if these families need even more to deal with.

This is one of the reasons I will never, EVER stop advocating for EDS awareness. If more people knew what EDS is, maybe there would be less cases like these.

~~~~
It's the month of May!! Do you know what that means?? It means that it's EDS awareness month!! And to celebrate/do my part, I'm going to *attempt* to take/publish a new picture every day for the next 31 days as a type of photojournalism project to illustrate concepts related to living with chronic illnesses. This is the 17th picture!
**What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)? EDS is a rare genetic disorder that causes a person's collagen to be defective; collagen is the main component of connective tissue (the "glue" that holds our bodies together) that is the support for ligaments, muscles, skin, organs, joints, and blood vessels. In other words, people with EDS are living in a body that is literally falling apart. We suffer from numerous dislocations/subluxations every single day, skin that rips very easily, bleeding problems, extreme bruising... and SO much more. To learn more about it, please visit www.EDNF.org, or even just Google it!**
Agir pour Benares, is a small French NGO i came to know about after I met its founder, Michel Batlle, in Varanasi, in February 2006. With the help of private donators, Michel opened three dispensaries in different parts of Varanasi, where free medical care is given daily to people for whom a simple visit to the doctor's or to hospital is often impossible for economical reasons. Two Indian doctors, as well as both Indian and Western nurses work full time at the dipsensaries, while groups of volunteers are busy treating minor injuries on the ghats along the Ganges, in nearby streets and in slum areas in and around the city, every morning. When cases are more severe, patients are brought to one of the dispensaries and sometimes hospital.
Many children who don't go to school, and whose parents are too busy working to look after them, are always around looking for attention, as seen here on Harichandra Ghat, Varanasi, India. 2011
Here Is Image of Abhay Ghat - Samadhi of Moraji Desai in Ahmedabad,Gujarat,India.
Morarji Ranchhodji Desai (Gujarati: મોરારજી રણછોડજી દેસાઈ, Hindi: मोरारजी देसाई; 29 February 1896 – 10 April 1995) was an Indian independence activist and the fourth Prime Minister of India from 1977–79. He was the first Indian Prime Minister who did not belong to the Indian National Congress. After assuming the office, Desai promoted his policies and peace initiatives between Pakistan and India to avoid conflicts, such as Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. For this, he was conferred with Nishaan-e-Pakistan (Order of Pakistan). Desai is the only Indian national to receive the highest civilian award from Pakistan, the Nishaan-e-Pakistan.
Morarji Desai was born into an Anavil Brahmin family in Bhadeli, Valsad in Bombay Presidency (now in Gujarat). His schooling life of Primary section is in Saurashtra The Kundla School, Savarkundla. It's now actual name is J.V.Modi School.After he joined Bai Ava Bai High School, Valsad. After graduating from Wilson College, Mumbai, he join ed the civil service in Gujarat. Later, he left the service of the British in 1924 and joined the civil disobedience movement against British rule in India in 1930. He spent many years in jail during the freedom struggle and owing to his sharp leadership skills and tough spirit, he became a favourite amongst freedom-fighters and an important leader of the Indian National Congress in Gujarat. When provincial elections were held in 1934 and 1937, Desai was elected and served as the Revenue Minister and Home Minister of the Bombay Presidency.
Morarji Desai became the prime minister after the landslide victory of the Janata coalition in 1977. The coalition, later the janata party, was full of personal and policy friction and thus failed to achieve much owing to continuous in-wrangling and much controversy. With no party in leadership of the coalition, rival groups vied to unseat Desai. Controversial trials of prominent Congress leaders, including Indira Gandhi over Emergency-era abuses worsened the fortunes of his administration. Desai worked to improve relations with neighbour and arch-rival Pakistan and restored normal relations with China, for the first time since the 1962 war. He communicated with Zia-ul-Haq and established friendly relations. Diplomatic relations were also re-established with China. His government undid many amendments made to the constitution during emergency and made it difficult for any future government to impose national emergency.
Since India's first nuclear test in 1974, Desai kept India's nuclear reactors stating "they will never be used for atomic bombs, and I will see to it if I can help it" In 1977, the Carter administration sold India, heavy water and uranium for its nuclear reactors but required American on-site inspection of nuclear materials. Desai declined, seeing the American stance as contradictory, in light of its own nuclear arsenal.
Retirement and Death :-
In 1979, Raj Narain and Charan Singh pulled out of the Janata Party, forcing Desai to resign from office and retire from politics at the age of 83. Desai campaigned for Janata Party in 1980 General Election as a senior politician but did not contest the election himself.
In retirement, he lived in Mumbai, and died at the age of 100. He had been honoured much in his last years as a freedom-fighter of his generation.
Born 29 February 1896(1896-02-29)Bhadeli, British India
Died 10 April 1995(1995-04-10) (aged 99) New Delhi, India
Morarji Desai was a strict follower of Mahatma Gandhi's principles and a moralist. He was a vegetarian “both by birth and by conviction"
Family :-
Morarji Desai is survived by his son Kanti Desai, two grandsons Bharat and Jagdeep Desai and four great grand children. The only one of them to hold any political ambition is Madhukeshwar Desai, one of his great grand children, son of Jagdeep Desai, who has taken it upon himself to revive the legacy of his illustrious great grandfather.
Travneve and Gladosovo are practically cut off from civilisation, only accessible by a dirt road, which passes through mined fields and a pig farm. Access to these 2 settlements where more than 100 people live is restricted, primarily for security reasons. Volunteers fill the gap in delivering essential goods and services.
“I am retired but I have so much energy left. I just cannot stay home when an armed conflict is going on and people are suffering,” says Olena, social worker and head of the community centre in the villages of Travneve and Gladosovo, Donetsk region. “The people I help live far away from each other. As a result, I constantly had to prioritise as I simply did not have time to help everybody.”
The journey from one place to another could take her 3 hours, even more if it was snowy. “One day on the way home, I came under fire. I had to hide in the reeds until I calmed down. Now that I have been given a bicycle, I am able to go around, visit and find out what help is needed so much faster!”
