While the main building of SOAS overall leaves something to be desired, architecturally speaking, I do really like the massive, heavy wooden doors. Just beyond them are glass revolving doors, and modern security turnstiles, activated by a chip in your student ID card.
The School was originally founded in 1916, its chief mission being to train officers and bureaucrats for postings overseas in the British Empire. Ironically, and perhaps sadly, the school has since transformed into the most liberal school in the UK, many of its professors and students alike zealots for anti-Western, anti-imperialist causes - supporting terrorism, oppressive regimes, and the like. Adhering to the idea that the losers of history - the poor, the oppressed, in short, the Third World - are all inherently good guys purely on account of their victimization, Western democracies or anything else that could be interpreted as an oppressor or Empire become automatically the bad guys in their view.
They support Chinese Communism while marching for a Free Tibet. They advocate that Iran should be given nuclear weapons even as they protest that the UK should be dismantling theirs.
SOAS is an incredible place, culturally, and has some incredible professors. Academically, I enjoyed it very much. Made many good friends, and enjoyed many wonderful artistic opportunities (seeing exhibitions, performances, etc) while surrounded by the most anti-American, anti-Semitic attitudes I have ever experienced.

The Koto is a Japanese zither similar to the Chinese Guzheng and the Korean Gayageum. It came to Japan from China in the 8th century. The strings pass over bridges called ji which can be moved to alter the pitch. The player uses three finger picks (on thumb, index finger, and middle finger) to pluck the strings.
The traditional instrument has 13 strings, was made of Paulownia wood and had silk strings (replaced today by tetoran).
Kotos are assigned the number 312.22 in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification of musical instruments ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornbostel-Sachs ), indicating:
3 = Chordophone. Instruments where the sound is primarily produced by the vibration of a string or strings that are stretched between fixed points.
31 = Simple Chordophones. Instruments which are in essence simply a string or strings and a string bearer
312 = Tube Zither. Instruments where the string bearer is a vaulted surface.
312.2 = Half-Tube Zithers. The strings are stretched along the convex surface of a gutter.
312.22 = Heterochord half-tube zithers.
