Another from yesterday morning's slightly eerie walk to work. Sadly, the sky didn't tear itself apart and I had to work.
We got the most snow in 5 years here in Kansas City, and are expecting more this weekend.
Sorry for my absence - I broke my ankle the beginning of December and haven't been able to get out much. Happy New Year!
Due to the blizzard on 2-1-2011 . The normally nocturnal L355 " Janesville - Monroe , Wisconsin" was canceled. After the storm had passed and m.o.w was able to get out and clean switches they Wisconsin and Southern ran the L355 the next day during daylight hours to Monroe , Wisconsin . As you can tell by the series of photos the train battled many large drifts along the way .
#68 Explore--thanks everyone!!!
Taken right after the blizzard began, in Millenium Park, near the "Bean" (Cloudgate sculpture).
Thanks for "Explore"!!!

As snow wreaked havoc bringing the city of Seattle to its knees... there was some beauty to be found (at Marymoor Park)
EJ&E SD38 664 leads this eastbound ethanol train at South Addison, IL on Feb. 4, 2011. This is after the record 21" snowfall, forever know as the Groundhog Day Blizzard. For more memories of this historic storm, visit this link.

So we survived the storm. We had some rather serious thunder snow. The thunder and lightening in the midst of the blizzard were quite impressive. Someone a few blocks from me lost power but our lights only flashed a few times. I was much more worried about the people who were stuck on Lake Shore Drive for over 9-12 hours.
This morning I went for a quick walk around the University of Chicago campus. This drift was in the Classics Quad. I encountered another drift that was taller than me, and I am going to estimate was 7feet tall at least. They are saying that this is the 3rd largest snow on record for Chicago.

The snow has begun, they are calling for 20-30 inches... the local news has labeled it a "Snowpocalypse"...

The week-long power outage created unique opportunities. In this particular scene, my dog is crossing from light to dark, as one half of the street had power and the other half didn't

On November 22 a severe winter storm (by Seattle standards) hit the city. As night came temperatures dropped dramatically, turning the snow and slush on the streets into non-negotiable ice. With a shortage of street plows, and the city's policy against salting roads, the entire city ground to a halt as commutes which would normally take 30 minutes now took over 7 hours in certain places.
In this photo a lone taxi tried to drive up a rather tame looking hill, only to get stuck in the middle of the street unable to go any further. Two pedestrians noticed the stranded car and kindly offered their assistance in pushing it out of its icy, stranded predicament. The falling snow, coupled with the wind being squeezed between the buildings of downtown Seattle, created a very thick, grainy and chaotic quality to the air. Growing up in northern New Jersey I've become accustomed to severe winter storms, but living in a city that is so ill equipped to deal with such conditions made this winter storm an experience unlike any other. A few inches of snow in northern New Jersey is considered nothing, yet in Seattle it can shut down an entire city for days.
The city was shut down Friday with a "massive" Texas snowstorm. Up to half an inch of snow fell, paralyzing the city for most of Friday. Frank the Hot Dog Vendor, wasn't sure if he should set up his hot dog stand during the big Snowpocalypse but he's glad he did. Several brave minifigures ventured out for hot dogs and hot chocolate, despite the dangerous icy conditions :-)
Yes, it's true. Austin shut down for less than half an inch of snow :-)
