Not even a solitary, hunched dog walker broke the frigid silence on the first day of the blizzard that hit the SW earlier this year. The following day the roads were snowbound with several villages cut off for days!
It looks like a scene from an Edgar Allen Poe story. A snowbound house somewhere in New England? In fact it's not so romantic. Just a gabled house on a hill surrounded by bushes in Infra Red. That ladder does look a little surreal though.
John Greenleaf Whittier lived on this New England farm from 1807 to 1836. The Birthplace is the setting of his most famous and beloved poem "Snowbound".

With a range that pretty much covers the whole of North America, the Horned Lark (Eremophila alpestris) is a pretty bird of open lands, even when those open lands are snowbound. In the winter, they travel in large, nomadic flocks and can often be found feeding in snowfields in the late afternoon. Still, they prefer snow-free dining options, and so can often be found at the edges of roads where plows have kicked up tasty frozen treats. Soon it will be spring here in WNY, and their minds will be on mating. Females are undoubtedly contemplating their nesting options and will soon perform breeding dances that look a bit as if they are taking dust baths. So similar is the look, that ladybirds who actually ARE taking dust baths to clean their feathers are sometimes mistaken as being amorous by would-be suitors!

My super fit labrador friend Rosie displaces twice her own bodyweight in snow with every excited leap...
After a late December snowstorm pounded the area, Wisconsin & Southern L464(?) attempted to make the run eastbound out of Sun Prairie on their Watertown Sub, but didn't get far when they plowed into a snowdrift and became stuck. The 10 mph speed limit certainly didn't help things at all in the gusty winds and single digit temperatures.

Winter Wonderland at Straubinger Haus - Tyrol - Austria
I took this photo during a snow shoe hike with my daughter last Sunday. We went from the Hindenburghütte near Reit im Winkel in Bavaria to the Straubinger Haus in Tyrol. We started with a snow shower and ended up at the Straubinger Haus with beautiful light and a lot of snow...the alpine huts were almost snowbound...we didn't meet anybody...a wonderful tour :-)
Ich habe dieses Foto während einer Schneeschuhwanderung letzten Sonntag mit meiner Tochter gemacht. Wir wanderten von der Hindenburghütte bei Reit im Winkel in Bayern hoch zum Straubinger Haus in Tirol. Wir starteten mit einer Schneeschauer und endeten oben am Straubinger Haus mit einem wunderbaren Licht und einer Menge Schnee...die Almhütten waren fast eingeschneit...wir sind niemandem begegnet...eine wundervolle Tour :-)
HFF. Taken about 3 weeks ago when we were experiencing some real winter weather. Now it is starting to feel like spring.
Not from the archive...got out for a day trip up a mountain. This was about 1800m up during a short break between snow showers.
Point Betsie Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Benzie County, built in 1858, marks the all-important entrance to southern end of the Manitou Passage, a once-vital maritime shipping channel. Although the lane is no longer used by large commercial vessels, the operating light signal remains a US Coast Guard aid to navigation to this day, and the site shines as a treasured landmark to mariners and landlubbers alike. ~Pure Michigan

Attingham Park was built in 1785 for Noel Hill, 1st Baron Berwick. Lord Berwick, a former MP for Shropshire, received his title in 1784 during the premiership of William Pitt the Younger, during which he had been instrumental in the reorganisation of the East India Company. Lord Berwick already owned a house on the site of Attingham Park called Tern Hall, but with money he received along with his title he commissioned the architect George Steuart to design a new and grander house to be built around the original hall. The new country house encompassed the old property entirely, and once completed it was given the name Attingham Hall.[2]
The Estate comprises roughly 4,000 acres, but during the early 1800s extended to twice that amount at 8,000 acres (3,000 hectares).[3] The extensive 640 acres (270 hectares) parkland and gardens of Attingham have a Grade II* Listed status
