Snipe have a dark brown, copper and straw yellow plumage which is intricately patterned and perfect for camouflage. They are small birds about the size of a blackbird. They feed by probing the mud with their long bills seeking worms.

Large crop taken from this 'wisp' of snipe which, for once came reasonably close @ Kidwelly Quay

Even without its cryptic camouflage this Snipe was well hidden in the murky pools enclosed by tall vegetation at Arundel.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

Scientific name: Gallinago gallinago.

Snipe are medium sized, skulking wading birds with short legs and long straight bills. Both sexes are mottled brown above, with paler buff stripes on the back, dark streaks on the chest and pale under parts. They are widespread as a breeding species in the UK, with particularly high densities on northern uplands but lower numbers in southern lowlands (especially south west England). In winter, birds from northern Europe join resident birds.

The UK population of snipe has undergone moderate declines overall in the past twenty-five years, with particularly steep declines in lowland wet grassland, making it an Amber List species. Info: RSPB.

Wilson's Snipe, backroads of Oregon.

I grew up thinking there was no such thing as snipes because of stories of kid pranks in which an unsuspecting friend was told to stand outside at night holding a burlap sack to catch a snipe… while the other "friends" ran off home! Now I know snipes do exist, and I FINALLY found a pair of Wilson's snipes on a local walking trail in Fort Collins, Colorado!

Another snipe photo from a very cold morning last month, I'm not sure whether this bird is just about to take a step or whether it's got cold feet!
