Taken during the cold spell in December 2022. With the ground frozen, this Snipe was more obliging than usual and was probing around in the soil presumably finding unfrozen nooks and crannies.

The first time I drove down this road, there was a snipe sat up on a post. My next visit (7 years later), this Snipe was sat on the exact same post.

Common Snipe using preen gland, WWT Slimbridge

Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago)

This one gave me my complimentary "Snipe on a fence post" for the season. They seem so skittish when encountered on a trail walk, but will allow a very close approach when perched on a roadside fence post.

I always love to see Snipe on their moorland breeding grounds. This one allowed me to photograph it from over a wall.

Image taken at Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire. These birds blend in well with the background and at first glance I didn't see them, but pleased to get four of them together in good light.
