Glory lily - At Nayapakkam, near Chennai

Another wildflower beauty I adore. This has been used as a medicine across cultures in the treatment of a range of diseases from wounds, ulcers and snakebites.

A native species, there are references to this plant in some poems as old as the 10th-4th cent. BC!

Meant to post this as a follow-up to the previous image a long time back, but sigh!!

I had a few minutes to shoot this 2-3 month old cobra....Not enough time though.

They are moving a lot and they are already very venomous!

The Chinese cobra (Naja atra), also called Taiwan cobra, is a species of cobra in the Elapidae family, found mostly in southern China and a couple of neighboring nations and islands.[It is one of the most prevalent venomous snakes in mainland China and Taiwan, which has caused many snakebite incidents to humans.

This beautiful wildflower with an ugly name was prominent in the Adirondacks last week. It's a European species introduced to America as early as 1683! The name is derived from an alleged theory that the dried plant was a cure for snakebite. Bugloss is from ancient Greek for "ox-tongue" which its leaves were thought to resemble. This is a common viper throughout India, and is the smallest member of the "big four" Indian snakes that are responsible for causing the most snakebite cases and deaths. This is of the subspecies E. c. . sochureki, of western deserts of India. They also use side winding locomotion. When agitated they rub their scales together to make a hissing sound, a warning to stay away.

Corn Flower - Echinacea.

"Echinacea angustifolia was widely used by the North American Plains Indians for its general medicinal qualities.[19] Echinacea was one of the basic antimicrobial herbs of eclectic medicine from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century, and its use was documented for snakebite, anthrax, and for relief of pain. In the 1930s echinacea became popular in both Europe and America as a herbal medicine". -- Wikipedia. ---

Seen this beautiful Common Brimstone (male) on the Red Campion during a wonderful walk through flowering meadows and fields in the lovely surrounding of Waren, Müritz National Park (Germany).

Thanks Mikul for the great title idea!

On the upper side the male is sulphur yellow and the female white with a greenish tinge but both have an orange spot in the centre of each wing.

The Red Campion (Silene dioica) is a herbaceous biennial or perennial plant, with dark pink to red flowers, each 1.8-2.5 cm across. The flowers are unscented.

Besides the aesthetic value of its flowers, the crushed seeds of red campion have also been used to cure snakebites. The nectar of the flowers is utilised by bumblebees and butterflies, and several species of moth feed on the foliage. (Wikipedia)

(Wikipedia)

Carefull. It will bite!

Echium vulgare L. ssp. pustulatum, commonly known as Viper’s Bugloss, is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial plant from the borage family (Boraginaceae). This subspecies is primarily found in southeastern Europe, particularly in the Balkans, and is well adapted to dry, rocky habitats such as meadows, roadsides, and karst landscapes.

Interesting facts:

•The name "Viper’s Bugloss" refers to the shape of the flower, which was once believed to resemble a snake’s head and was used in folk medicine against snakebites.

•Its vibrant blue to violet flowers attract a wide range of pollinators, especially bees and butterflies.

•The plant is covered in stiff hairs, giving it a rough texture.

•It’s drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, sandy soils, making it valuable for wildflower meadows and erosion control.

Hrvatski:

•Cvjetovi jarkoplave do ljubičaste boje privlače mnoge oprašivače, osobito pčele i leptire.

________________________________________

English – Additional Interesting Facts:

•The plant contains alkaloids, which make it slightly toxic to grazing animals, especially in large quantities, though pollinators are not affected.

•Its deep taproot allows it to access water from deeper soil layers, giving it an advantage in arid environments.

•Historically, it was used in herbal medicine to treat wounds, coughs, and fevers, though modern use is limited due to its toxicity.

•The flowers change color from pink to blue as they mature, which helps pollinators distinguish between older and fresher blooms.

•It plays an ecological role in supporting biodiversity, providing nectar in dry, nutrient-poor areas where few other plants thrive.

•Its rough leaves and hairs are thought to deter herbivores, making it less likely to be eaten by wildlife.

________________________________________

Hrvatski – Dodatne zanimljivosti:

The two female figures from the recent Lanard "The Corps! Elite" toyline. These are very well designed with excellent articulation and almost compareable to modern GI Joe 4" figures. Both figures use the exact same bodysculpt in different color schemes, only the heads are different. The crossbow and knives can be carried on their back and the pistol fit in the thigh holster. I swapped the heads like I noticed someone on Ebay do, definately think they look better this way.

So this weekend I went to Alexandria, Indiana to see some friends of mine. It was about a 10 hour drive and my friend Kait and I went together. She is from South Dakota and had to drive a separate 5 hours before getting to me to head to Indy. I made a point to take pictures of all the beautiful people I got to see while I was there :)
