An unexpected use of the 100-400 is for macro photography. I also own the 100 f/2.8 Macro but it is mostly good for things which do not move. For birds—especially little ones as seen here, it is best to remain very far away and approach very slowly.
Chinese have a saying: “麻雀雖小, 五臟俱全” which literally means that “a sparrow may be small, but it has every organ it needs.” It is used to describe small things are very functional despite its size, e.g. the MacBookAir.
This macro gives new understanding of this saying, as I can see every piece of feather and be amazed how great nature really is.

Rainy foggy days like these—with a really low contrast over the whole frame—is best for photography.

Yes they pretty much all describe the the gray and dark colors—but the characters are different. Unfortunately, to translate a poetic language such as Chinese to a relatively more descriptive language such as English is not very easy. Chinese are pictograms and ideograms—so mostly it needs to be “interpreted” and not really very “direct”. Its meaning can be rather obscure. To appreciate it best, learn it. :)

I bought the 100-400 originally not to photograph birds but to photograph the moon. But I do not often see it because it was always so cloudy in Hong Kong and even if I have a full view of the sky, I do not see it.
But I did finally. I shot this with the 7D, because it has a crop-frame factor of 1.6x. I used the 1.4x Extender also. Altogether this gives me a 400 x 1.6 x 1.4 = 896 mm equivalent on a full-frame.
The cavit of sticking the 1.4x on the 100-400 is that you lose AF completely because with the exception of the 1D line which can focus at f/8, none of the other camera bodies can. With this in mind I might actually buy a 2x extender to see if I can get any closer.
I used a release cable for this shot but I can see some vibration at full-res. So next time I see it again I will use a mirror-lockup. I am also thinking of buying a geared head for the tripod because it seems that even on the tripod the camera still moves after some adjustments—no matter how small.
The Chinese name is quite descriptive as 娥 is a goose and 眉 is the eyelashes — it describes the moon as looking like the eyelashes of geese.

The first time I saw this I wanted to photograph it, but I don’t know how. I usually walk by this place on my way home. It is not really one of these things where I would lug my tripod with me really.
So what’s different now? Usable ISO 12800 on the 6D! I have repeated many times that you do not need an expensive camera to do photography, but for some shots you do need the right tools for it. In most cases a point and shoot will suffice. But for extreme cases like this even the 7D’s ISO 3200 will not cut it.
A generous amount of luminance noise reduction has been applied in Lightroom—but not really out of the ordinary. The 6D sensor is quite good really. This camera really does magic. Very happy with it so far—not to mention not having to lug the GP-E2 to get GPS readings. Less attachment, quicker snap.

People say that they don’t like the EOSM because it has no electronic viewfinder. To be honest when it is so dark at night it was easier to to manual focus on the LCD while zooming in 5x then using a viewfinder. I think that I lost my remote cable release so I photographed this on the EOSM because it was easier to just do a 2sec countdown and snapped it without adding much vibration to the capture.

Outside the stadium where the championship took places, a tattooed-and-muscled up Chinese martial arts (武術 Wushu) competitor concentrated as his coach and crowd cheered on before taking his punch at the piles of brick in front of him—multiple times.
Meanwhile, inside the stadium, the championship went on but I don’t have a telephoto lens with me because I really just walked by the place randomly. Every time I did not bring my SLR, crazy things happen—so you see why I usually bring it with me everywhere I go.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art (香港藝術館) is the main art museum of Hong Kong [1]. It was originally established as the City Hall Museum and Art Gallery at the City Hall in Central in 1962 before moving to its present location at 10 Salisbury Road in 1991.
Unlike almost all art museums int the world, the Hong Kong Museum of Art does not take donation—a fact which I thought was somewhat bizarre. When I lived in New York, the annual tax-deductible membership to MoMA and the Whitney is part of my yearly expenses. When I went to the Hong Kong Museum of Art and paid for my annual membership, it was 100 HKD (~13 USD) which is a far cry from the 250 USD which I am used to. I asked the woman if they have other perhaps “patron level membership levels” and she looked at me oddly with a blank stare.
The permanent collections include many Chinese traditional landscape paintings (山水畫) as well as artworks by local artists. The landscape paintings in particular had much impact on my current photography work as it was from there that I learned the concept of 人氣, the presence of humans—no matter how small—to breathe life in otherwise cold compositions.

A black kite (Milvus migrans) holds onto his fresh-caught fish tightly with its big claws near the water surface at Tolo Harbour. I have often seen fishermen nearby so I guess I should be able to find more of these sightings in the future.
Unlike the previous shot which was photographed from the 27th floor down [1], this one was shot on ground level. To be frank was his quick dive into the sea. This shot was mostly made possible by 7D’s fast 8fps burst rate and AI Servo tracking. Everything happens so quickly that there is not really any time to think about how to compose the image, so it was cropped after the fact.

Of course, I shot a whole lot of this bird in flight. I have wanted to do a video, but I am not skilled at videography, so instead I thought that I would utilise the 7D’s 8fps to collect a range of stills to potentially create a stop-motion video of them.
These were shot handheld using AI Servo with the IS in Mode 1 as it was handheld, but I do wonder if I should have shot in Mode 2 perhaps — though in previous attempts when I shot in Mode 2 for some eagles, they did not come out sharp enough.
You see the birds are quite fast — here although the shutter speed is at 1/640 sec, it still does not appear to be fast enough. Perhaps I should look into shooting with Tv instead of Av for birds in the future.
For this I also tried out the well-hyped “camera shake reduction” filter inside Photoshop CC and decided to not process with it after seeing the result — it is rather artefact laden. I supposed that it would have some use for some if you intend the photo to be outputted in lower resolution, though for 1:1 output I think that those noise are quite noticeable.

Sketches during the process which eventually lead to Numbers in a City: New Haven, CT / 1997 / SML Projects (Flickr Set)
Process (8 pages)
+ 4: Photo tracking matrix (to-do list)
+ 5: Photo tracking matrix (to-do list)<
Summary
Typographic landscape of a city described through visually counting from 1 to 100.
Setup
These were shot with my first digital camera, the Sony Mavica FD7.
Statement
This was my first photography project. It started out as a project for a typography class while I was in college. Like most graphic design assignments at Yale, it was very open ended. We were asked to show the experience of a city through the language of typography. I have always been interested in numbers, and I as such I decided to run around New Haven and photograph numbers which represent the city, from 1 to 100.
The series is to be projected on the wall as slideshow. The numbers are recognizably New Haven, and most who have been in New Haven can recognize the sense of time and space as they go through the series. Some commented that it reminded them of Sesame Street.
It was so successful that I thought of extended this to different neighborhoods in New York, but I never had the time to work on more of them after college, and as such I have only completed the first and only one...
The original series was displayed via a conventional slide projector. In order to best-simulate the original intention on a computer, view the set as a slideshow and set the speed to fast.

The urban landscape is filled with billboards and other distraction, so it is often hard to find a perspective which is void of all the visual distraction when using a wide angle lens. However, I think that I have identified the way out—look up and remove everything except the sky.
This is another shot of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Unlike the previous shot which is about the architecture’s overall recognisable form [1], this one is a minimalist take on one of the facade which lights up with tiny spots at night.
The irregular and almost organic light fixtures echoes the slightly cloudy sky, whereas the linear angular architecture creates contrast to the otherwise dark sky.

A group of high school students circled around a leather castle hanging from the ceiling. At first glance, it resembles something not dissimilar to that of a group of LV luggage bags. So they are all too busy taking photos with their cell phone. A boy was seen explaining what he sees to his female classmates.
There does not appear to be anything wrong with this scene, except that the castle was not made with ordinary leather — these are kinky leather sex toys. If the girls had known, they probably would have all screwed “Eww” and disappeared into Neverland.
Oh the joy of fine art — once elevated to a stage for excellence, no one even thought of the impossible. But it is. Demented? Yes, absolutely — which is precisely why I loved it.

Telephoto lenses have an amazing way of compressing distances, and you can see this fairly well with this capture.
These are street lights on the highway near the Hong Kong International Airport leading to Terminal 1. On the far side is the ocean and mountains which are approximately 3 km (10k ft) away, but they appear fairly close by because it was shot with the 100-400 at 310mm with the 7D = 496mm on full frame.

A collage of architectural forms in Central / Admiralty, the financial downtown district of Hong Kong.
In the center, the unmistakable triangular forms of the Bank of China Tower (中銀大廈 BOC Tower). Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M.Pei, it is one of my favorite architectures in Hong Kong. It is currently the fourth tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, after International Commerce Centre, Two International Finance Centre and Central Plaza. But while the those tallest three buildings have no character (IMAO) to speak of besides being tall, the BOC Tower is a modern structural engineering marvel, and the first composite space frame high-rise building [1].
On the right is also one of my favorite architectures in Hong Kong. Standing 25-storey in total, 8 levels of the The Hong Kong Club Building (香港會) is owned by the Hong Kong Club while the other floors are leased for office lease. What I love about it is its simple curved facade which is extremely identifiable despite its small size [2].
On the left is the AIA Central. It was originally named the AIG Central, but it switched hands in 2009 after the global financial crisis. I mostly included this building in the frame to show the contrast in scale by the workers tending the windows via the outdoor elevator [3].

千山鳥飛絕,萬徑人蹤滅。

Technically there is no snow in this photo but every time I see a tiny boat sail by the sea outside my window, I am reminded of this poem by poet 柳宗元 Liu Zongyan [1], especially in the winter.

I often tell people that photography is not necessarily a reflection of reality. Even without any manipulation in the dark room or heavy montage action inside Photoshop, what is depicted may be a mind trick.
Seen here was taken through my window. At first I was wondering why there appears to be “speed boats” running in curves. Then I realized that those were cars on the highway from the fainted reflection by the window. The reflection on the sea is also a reflection. The sun was so strong that it would in fact be impossible to photograph directly, yet here it works somewhat, thus superimposing two images to one in one shot.
The mountains were superimposed similarly. One is actually present, the other is reflected. The rectangular forms far down are private housing development, whereas the structures to the left is a construction site, I think.
The scene is completely unreal, yet it is very interesting. So next time you see an UFO photograph, think twice about all the physical possibilities you can do with using the camera alone. I am not trying to defunct any UFO theories, and I certainly entertain any possibilities, but in many instances photography does lie.

Recently I came across a WTF question on Quora asking why queuing in China is less orderly than most Western countries [1]. Really? Seriously? I never witnessed this behavior in China. Often people in Hong Kong queue up better than any queues I have seen in the US.
Pictured is the queuing at bus stops at night. Most of these buses arrive completely empty, making the act of queuing completely unnecessary, but people do queue up regardless. Since queuing is unnecessary, I usually don’t and I usually take my time to run around the neighborhood doing photography until the bus arrives and I will wait til everybody is aboard before getting on.
Perhaps that would make me “less orderly” but I am not normal and certainly in this photo you would see that people do line up very orderly. Point.

This is the “aisle” of the rose garden at the Royal Botanic Garden. When the flowers bloom from October through May, it is a popular spot for weddings and other events. An old couple were seen holding hand-in-hand walking down this aisle, giving new meaning to something old and something new.

An oriental magpie robin (鵲鴝, Copsychus saularis) is a small passerine bird that is also known as 豬屎渣 (?!), 吱渣, 信鳥 or 四喜 in Chinese [1, 2].
They are very common birds in urban areas (pictured) as well as forests. They are particularly well known for their songs and were once popular as cage birds.
Photographed with the 100-400 and the 7D.

I bought the Canon EOS 6D today, and of course the first thing I did is drop in the 17-40 and check out the wide end. Wow incredible—drama! I have not really used a full-frame body since the analog days so it is a very welcoming experience so far. And of course I see now that the natural vignette from the lens is quite serious—something which I never noticed previously with the 7D because it has an APS-C CMOS.
Before picking the 6D, I have thought it long and hard if I should get the EF-S 10-22, but noting that my goal as always been to get a full-frame body eventually, I hesitated. Trust that you will see more use of this camera soon on my stream.

水 Water is an important element in 風水 Feng Shui—if you know Chinese, you would know that the two characters 風 Feng means wind, and 水 Shui means water.
Water is important because it flows. In Cantonese, the character is synonymous with money. And money should always be flowing, thus at the garden downstairs at 聽濤雅苑 Vista Paradiso, where I live, water flows continuously on many manmade falls.
I took my tripod with me to do some panorama in the neighborhood. On my way back I passed by the garden and took some photos. It is rainy today so even though I did not have an ND filter, I was able to photograph this under a long exposure (5 second to be exact, but enough to render water is silk).

Back for more waterfall. I shot a series of these. The one which is actually correctly exposed (1 second) has so much water that I cannot really make out the rocks it is falling into, so I shot this one which is not correctly exposed (0.3 second) but then it has the correct amount of water splashing, then I overexpose it back inside Lightroom.
In the analog days we call this push and pull. In digital photography, it is often better to underexpose then to overexpose, because underexposing usually mean that you can push the whites, but overexposing and you are pretty much through. Of course this is not a golden rule but in most cases it is true.
This is also me placing my camera in awkward position. No tripod is used. I never really do photo trips—I just take my camera everywhere I go.

In art school, we were taught to “draw what [we] see.” The philosophy is simple: when the left brain get involved and proceed to interpret what “must” be reality, what is drawn is never a representation of reality. Of course, an artist is up to his/her own interpretation, but if the intention is to represent reality, then this is a very good way of achieving it.
These bizarre patterns are seen every night outside my window. Photography captures reality so it is interesting to note how it seems completely illogical that water should appear like this—but yet it does.
Ships disturbs the flow of water, so under long exposure, it renders a matte surface which reflects the lights + shadows from the tree-lined Tolo Highway. The undisturbed water is left behind with a clear dark divide, brightened only by the light anchor floating in the sea.
The capture is mounted on a tripod and captured using a remote, so trust that everything is lying still, but the water moves, so the light anchor is moving quite a bit, even though we might think that it should not.

The one thing constant about the ever-changing urban landscape is the cranes at the construction sites.
I was born in Hong Kong, but I went to the US for college (university) in 1995, and after graduation I moved to New York and have been living there ever since. But in 2012, I moved back to Hong Kong to start my own company. And I definitely notice the change.
Most of the newer architecture in Hong Kong is built upon landfill, so in many ways the Victoria Harbour just got smaller. It seems that even the Star Ferry ride as a result is shorter. Could that possibly be?
Pictured is a set of cranes seen outside the International Finance Centre (IFC). It seems that they are building even more structures over there but exactly what is unclear.

A lot of the shopping malls I have visited in Hong Kong features open skylight ceilings, which makes it much less claustrophobic as well as being energy efficient.
I discovered that the autofocus on the 50/1.4 was dead, and I probably will never go fix it because it is probably not worth it, but luckily manual focus is rarely an issue.

Located on the 20th floor of iSquare in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Canon Customer Care Center provides support for both in-warranty and out-of-warranty care for its customers.
I went there yesterday mainly to get the battery grip for 6D as the retailer who sold me the body did not carry it, and also to send my 7D to be looked at.
None of the camera bodies except the 1D series are weather-sealed, and after leaving the 7D near my opened window during stormy weathers in Hong Kong, it kept on going to Err 70 which bothered me. My 7D is well out-of-warranty but paying 300 HKD (38.65 USD) is a fair price to pay to make sure that everything is operational inside.
Aside from providing excellent service, the interior architecture filled with organic forms is a feast to the eyes, making the experience quite pleasant.

Recently I went to meet up with the founders of Nomiku, the first immersion circulator designed for the home cook who got its start from a successful Kickstarter campaign and successfully raised $600,000 over its targeted $200,000 from 1,800 backers back in 2012.
The team is now in Hong Kong as they work on getting their production lines going in China to fulfil orders. After many delays, I was told that it should be shipped by July in 2013.
Pictured is the Nomiku founders Lisa Q. Fetterman (CEO, currently pregnant), Abe Fetterman (CTO, Lisa’s husband) and Wipop Bam Suppipat (product design) doing tricks with the spoon after a meal at a Spanish restaurant in Hong Kong.

When I document events I find it more interesting to capture both the subjects _and_ the photographers rather than the subjects alone.
Leung Kwok-hung 梁國雄 (born 27 March 1956 in Hong Kong) is a Left-wing political activist and a member of the Legislative Council in Hong Kong. He is also known as “長毛” (Long Hair) in Hong Kong because he has long hair, which is an uncommon feature among politicians in Hong Kong (and perhaps in the global arena as well).
I could not readily identify the reporters for this team, but if you know please do comment below. As with most productions, I am always interested in the amount of work which goes behind the scene which the viewer would never see.

I knew from experience that long exposure of water would render a blur, but what I did not know is that because of this blur, the reflected forms would be clear and sharp. Obviously this made sense but it is a very welcoming surprise, so I will try more of it in the future.
The 1.4x extender continues to be a wonderful accessory. It turns the 70-200 f/4L effectively into a 98-280 f/5.6L lens. Together with the APS-C sized 7D with a 1.6 crop factor, it is functioning as a 157-448 f/5.6L lens on a full frame body.
Zooming that far also means that there are not much geometric distortion so it has been a really fun ride.
There is a reason that I did not get the 2x extender. Each 1.4x will stop the lens down 1 stop, and what most people might not realise is that with the exception of EOS 1D, none of the Canon EOS line-up can do autofocus with an f/8 lens. For this shot I used manual focus anyway because it was too dark, but for shooting daylight scenes especially birds having autofocus is still much of a blessing.

Completely unexpected, someone wakeboarded outside the window yesterday, creating some truly wicked forms on water—sweet. For these kinds of photos you really need an SLR—but if you can do it with a point+shoot + able to focus then kudos to you—please remember to share your secret. :)
Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques.

It is extremely rare that I would have the time to walk around the airport to do photography. Usually when I am at the airport I am in a hurry. But I came here last week to hang out with a friend whom I haven’t seen for 20 years when she was passing through. And since I came all the way I thought that I would utilize the opportunity to take some photographs also.
Featuring very articulated structural forms and designed by Norman Foster, the Hong Kong International Airport is a perfect marriage of form and function—form follows function—which is precisely what I love about it.

Aside from writing, Billy Clarke (Instagram:@rollhk) [1] also does aggressive inline skating with a bunch of other street kids in Hong Kong.
I did not know that rollerblading has its own lingo until now. This particular move here is called “Alley-oop Fishbrain”. According to a rollerblading glossary [2], “Alley-oop” is a move where you turn one way while rotating (to land the grind) another, where as “Fishbrain” is a topside makio grind named by Aussie skater Tom Fry. Definitely will need an illustrated guide.

I was not really prepared for this shoot—it was ad hoc and out of the blue. It was also midnight, so there was only so much I could do. This is a good example of strobist in action though — just plop the 580EX closed to the subject and boom there’s light. Billy is not too happy with it showcasing his rear but technically speaking that _is_ where the action is at…
I have asked him to invite me when there is actually light next time. Seriously.

I got sick of processing this set of photos so I took a short break from it. Most likely I will be processing one every now and then as it is no longer “timely” so to speak but I do still intend to write a blog post about it so here we go.
Pictured is a row of Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knights on the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) when it recently visited Hong Kong. The CH-46 is a medium-lift tandem root transport helicopter. It is used by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) to provide all-weather, day-or-night assault transport of combat troops, supplies and equipment [1].
From the marking on the plane we can see that these are from the HMM-364 squadron, which is part of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). The squadron, known as the "Purple Foxes", is based at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3rd MAW) [2].
Although Wikipedia suggests that the HMM-364 squadron should only contain the CH-46, the markings on the helicopters suggest that it might also consist of the CH-53 Sea Stallions, as seen on a previous photo [3]. I am not part of the military so I do not know which is more accurate, though photography does not lie, maybe?

I am eye’ing at the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L now. But at US$2,599 it is not exactly affordable. So for now I continue to photograph with the 17-40mm f/4L and do post-processing work inside Lightroom and Photoshop to get the perspective in order.

There is an almost cardinal rule in visual arts to not place anything in dead center, but sometimes the objects are dead center and you cannot really move them. In those instances, I just leave them dead center—the sun in this case.
Would I have preferred the sun to be located to the left? Probably. So I probably should venture up north (to the right) and photograph this. But if I venture up north then I would not be able to see the entire university campus.
Or perhaps wait til another season. If I remember correct the sun used to set a bit way further to the left in the winter.
That winged object on the left in the sky is not a bird. It is a plane. I had no idea that planes fly on this part of the sky until yesterday.

My sister commented on a photograph from the serenity series, saying that it needs a tiny little figure to complete the Chinese painting. Well, nature has a way of delivering tiny men for me to photograph, and look, there he is—alone, fishing in the middle of nowhere.

25-second long exposure with the new 100-400 mounted on tripod. The 7D is in the shop right now so here with the 6D. Pretty sweet. I am testing the long end right now so this frame is probably a little bit too tight—but the fact that I can see the doors on in the building across the harbor is nice, I must say.
With these new toys I think that it is easy to get carried away with tech—sorry. Someone said that a self portrait of me playing with the 6D looks like a kid in the candy store—well maybe because I am [1]. :)

Oh, the things you see under long exposure.
I was photographing the reflection of the lights of the 吐露港公路 Tolo Highway against the 吐露港 Tolo Harbour way across on the other side of the harbor where SML Universe HKG is at. But when I process it I noticed that there was a ship in the middle. I would not have seen it had it not been this shot.
The shot was mounted on a tripod and done in a delayed-time release to minimise vibration, so the blur is likely a result of the natural blur — it is on water after all.
A generous amount of S/H is applied in Photoshop to extract some details. I am thinking of getting a Holga because it seems like that toy camera is quite good at rendering these kinds of things.

Two asian waterbirds chasing the tail of a Keka-class patrol boat of the Hong Kong Marine police launch at Tolo Harbour in Hong Kong. I think that I might be able to complete the full line-up by year end. :)
According to Wikipedia, Keka class patrol boats are vessels designed by ASC Pty. Ltd. (formerly named Australian Submarine Corporation) originally for the Royal Thai Navy (3 vessels). A second variant series was designed for the Hong Kong Marine Police (6 vessels) [1].
Also, please note that the “seagulls” referenced earlier on the stream are apparently all asian waterbirds. I just didn’t realise that. And apparently they are under WWF protection [3].
Regarding the black and white processing, I know that it is a bit of extreme. But doing scientific reproduction too long and I get bored. So a bit of fun for me.

I finally figured out what those weird patterns on the water surface is. They are tracks left behind by ships. You don’t see this normally in open waters. But 沙田海 Sha Tin Hoi is part of 吐露港 Tolo Harbor. As water mass surrounded by land, it is far easier for tracks to be left behind.
Lights get reflected based on the angle of the water surface, so when viewed afar they look like an ever-evolving abstract painting. It is wonderfully amazing.
This leads me to think that if I am to model something inside RealFlow [1] and then place a few ships on it I should be able to create an ever-evolving abstract painting also. But who has the time and computer processing power to do that? So I will leave it up to nature to produce art for me for my ceiling-to-floor “wall” outside, I think.
