I guess maybe most people photograph things on airlines in order to file complaints so the flight attendants quickly stop me from photographing more. I just like the beauty of utilitarian forms.

I was told this form of art is known as “apple bobbing.” I don't really understand why people would do such a thing but I guess nerds are just crazy like that. :)

As promised, here is the black and white rendering of the color photo you saw earlier [1].

I have taken the opportunity to also crop out the bits which I do not like. Other than the bits which create an imperfect seams, my intention for this photo is to show the mountains sandwiched between the clouds, and all that scenery on the left hand side, while interesting, distracts from the overall composition.

As you can see, you can push + pull quite a bit in black and white. People often think that black and white is more difficult—the reverse is true. It does take some artistry to get a beautiful black and white, but it is mostly because color photography often contains way too much distracting information which makes them troublesome to work with.

If you want to get better at photography, I recommend that you work with B+W first before venturing into color territory. Learn to walk before you run, so the saying goes.

Since the photograph is cropped the horizontal FOV is no longer 50 degree but I don’t really know how much it is anymore. Lightroom, unlike Hugin, is not smart like that, unfortunately.

f/8 at night! Seriously. Clearly for the Canon EOS 6D—impossible is nothing! I can’t wait til the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L arrives. I ordered it last week so I should get it any day now.

This photo has been stuck in processing for a while. Mostly I thought that it has a lot of potential, but I do not feel that I have quite finished it, though I do not really know what is bothering me concretely—except that it is not at its best form yet.

It is a panorama stitched together using 5 captures, though I have decided to crop to a square as I am mostly interested in the “extension” of the cloud immediately next to the mountains, and the additional area to the right of where the frame is cropped is somewhat unnecessary.

Keeping only what is necessary to complete an image is what I generally aim for. When I made the shot it seems useful, but it feels more successful when cropped as a square.

At night, the commercial use car park at Chung On Shopping Centre is almost empty, leaving behind a couple of white vans. But the trash that was left behind at the loading docks are still seen everywhere.

This is a handheld panorama stitched together using 14 full res 7D RAW. I photographed this at night because during the day there is no way I can see the venting pipes on the ceiling so clearly. It is beautiful. On the right are the gates to the carpark. To the far side you can see more densely populated public housing development in Hong Kong.

There are a lot of seagulls in Sydney—as it should be. Beaches in Hong Kong have no birds… Actually, even the place to watch birds in Hong Kong—the Wetland Park—does not have many birds… which make this all the more special.

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) is one of the two major convention and exhibition venues in Hong Kong, along with AsiaWorld-Expo.

The venue was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, in association with Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd. Larry Oltmanns led the design as the Design Partner with SOM.

Pictured is the second phase of the centre, located on an artificial island completely landfilled. The rooftop is designed to look like birds in flight. Amazingly the whole project took only 48 months from land reclamation to completion.

This panorama is stitched together using 15 full resolution RAW on the 7D with the 100-400 set to max and photographed from Central. It might not be the best vantage point for this photo so I might go back and photograph from the pier.

I could have used a wide angle lens but I wanted the resolution.

Spy vs Spy.

The radar towers of the USS Peleliu with a distant view of The Center (Chinese: 中環中心) makes for an interesting contrast of forms. In the front, the radars are used for telecommunication in the battlefield while the antennas on the top of the office building is likely used for civil telecom uses.

The Center is the fifth tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong. With a height of 346 m (1,135 ft), it comprises 73 stories. The Center is one of the few skyscrapers in Hong Kong that is entirely steel-structured with no reinforced concrete core [1].

Also pictured at the lower right corner of the capture you can see the top of the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港四季酒店), a five-star hotel building in the International Finance Centre complex in Central, Hong Kong [2].

Sometimes nature creates the most beautiful paintings on its own, and I have to capture it.

The river reflected buildings from afar. The white little egret took a briefer by the pebbles. The sun hits the pebbles from behind. Everything poetry.

For me, photography is part memories but also a way to paint. It recorded a state of mind that I felt as I mindfully looked for beauty among what appeared to be a pile of dirty from afar.

It’s urban, but it’s also nature. Urbanism is simply a result of humans gathering together.

Every time I go to Wu Kai Sha, I see an old man with long flowing silver beard picking stones at the beach.

After some research, it turns out that he has been manually organising the stones on the beach for years voluntarily after noting that quite a number of people swim at the public beach which is not looked after by government officials.

And so day and night, he comes to the beach to sort the stones out into neatly organised piles so that other people can enjoy the beach.

What an incredible story — I was planning to shoot some documentary here perhaps but the locals told me that his story is quite well known and has been covered by televisions in Hong Kong already — though I have no idea where. When I get the courage to speak to strangers, I will go investigate further.

Stay tuned.

I came here originally because I saw some asian waterbirds but by the time I came they were already gone. I have no idea what time they come out, so instead I ended up photographing sparrows—which is a bird but definitely much smaller.

This was photographed with the 7D with the 100-400, and here you see that at ISO 1000 the 7D is quite grainy when compared to the 6D. This is why I pretty much stop bothering carrying the 7D when I do night shots these days.

Again, bokeh is creamy but even with nature forms I see some oddity to it. I can’t quite describe it except that it feels somewhat “articulated” to my taste. Lens resolution is decent as you can make out some spider web on the left.

Continuing the theme of intrinsically unphotographable subject matters, this is a beautiful collage of forms seen on the ground at the Ma On Shan Sports Ground after the rain. The hard surface is accented by pale reflection of from the rain of the nearby plants and architecture.

When I first started the 寧 Serenity, I expected that it could not last too long because how much could someone photograph the view outside one’s window?

But I was wrong. In every single capture, I observe how the same become different, and how I am getting better at photographing something as mundane as the view outside my window—simply because my standards also go up as a result of doing it over and over again.

Some artists I see will try to paint / photograph something different every time they utilise their medium. I think that trying new things is great, but so is doing the same thing repeatedly. Like nature, life never really does repeats itself. And so when you do things repeatedly it also tend to be different each time. When you add all these minute differences over time you will see a dramatic difference to your art over time.

I believe in that. So this series will continue. It would, I think, be interesting 10 years from now to look back and see just how crappy these photos are…

Hong Kong is one of the highest density cities in the world, mostly because while most cities in the world are built on flatland, Hong Kong’s geography is mostly made up with mountains and steep hill.

In fact, according to Wikipedia, More people in Hong Kong live or work above the 14th floor than anywhere else on Earth, making it the world’s most vertical city [1].

Pictured is one of the public housing architectures in Hong Kong. It packs a lot of population in a single block, while leaving enough space around buildings for breathing room.

This was shot earlier this month with the 7D. Not wide enough. Trust that I will be going back soon with the 6D.

Residents of Parkview (陽明山莊) wait for their shuttle to come after a day of work. Many residential developments in Hong Kong have private shuttles which allow residents to live far away from city center while having convenient transportation options.

Central (中環) is the financial district of Hong Kong. The tallest building in the center is the IFC complex, to its right on the far side of the ocean is ICC. Norman Foster’s HSBC HQ is near the left, and the Bank of China by IM Pei can be see on the far left.

This 360-degree panorama was taken handheld (thus parallax errors) on the balcony level of the City Hall when I went to see Jörg Demus last month. I have a tendency to be late so these days I try to go a bit earlier and use the extra time before to do photography nearby.

Stitched with 29 captures on the 6D + 17-40 f/4L, processed in Autopano Giga 3 and Lightroom 4. Will definitely haul my pano head back soon.

Photography as an art form is different than photography as a scientifically accurate portrayal of reality. This is something I struggle with daily. When I photograph things which are in particular journalism worthy then I think that accuracy matters. But when it is to assert your own point of view then you do not really need to worry about how close to reality your photo is. Since any monkey can operate a technologically advanced optical instrument to reproduce reality, the job for a photographer is to assert his own processing, I think.

By processing in black and white and using different channels for color mixing, you can achieve tonal differences which are far different than the original luminance values of the photo.

Porsches are everywhere in Hong Kong, so I’ve wised up—there is no reason to go look for them on the street really, all I need to do is go downstairs to the car park and there is a healthy dose of them in very bright colors.

The 911s are my favorite Porsche model—the duck which speeds. Beautiful forms and very humanistic. It is an unassuming form which roars when it runs.

As always, I prefer natural looking HDRs, but then this sky is calling for drama—mostly courtesy of the full frame body + 17-40. To be frank I am super happy with the 6D purchase, and am very glad that I finally get to photograph scenes on the wide end. Nature can be so dramatic.

This is handheld—banking on my window, so the +3 shot was at ISO 320 but it is close enough that the moving boat did not cause too much of a ghosting thanks to 6D’s decent 4fps shooting.

At night, the bus terminal at Chung On Shopping Centre is quiet. But rows of taxis can still be found hoping for a midnight ride. A crowd of teenagers hang out on the left hand side on the street in front the 24-hour McDonald’s. This is the road which would eventually lead to the car park, which you can see earlier on my stream. Also seen are the marking on the road which alerts the pedestrian which direction to check for calls. On the far right, you can observe that most people have already gone to sleep, leaving only a few lights on.

I have always wanted to photograph this road, as I love the S curve on the right hand side, but none of my lenses are wide enough, especially on a crop body. This photograph here is stitched together using 11 Canon EOS 7D RAW captures in portrait mode. Although handheld, the subjects are far enough which makes this stitch job relatively smooth.

2. Southorn Playground (Chinese: 修頓遊樂場, 修頓球場) is a sports and recreational facility in the Wan Chai area of Hong Kong. It comprises a football field, four basketball courts, and a children's playground.

Southorn Playground is surrounded by Hennessy Road in the North, Luard Road (West), Johnston Road (South) and Southorn Centre (East). It has been Wan Chai's main recreational area since the early 1970s. Formerly a thriving night market, it was named in 1934 after Sir Wilfrid Thomas Southorn who was the Colonial Secretary (second highest position of Hong Kong Government) in 1925-1936. Though the site is not big, it is often used for district functions such as fun fairs and sports matches.

A construction worker working on the bamboo scaffolding at the top floors of the Innovation Tower at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU) [1].

Here you can also see more clearly how they tie the bamboo scaffolding, where they hold the nylon ties on their waists. The striped tshirt worn by the worker creates an interesting contrast of forms with the orthogonal thought organic forms of the bamboo scaffolding, which in turn creates an interesting contrast with the curved metal frame of the architectural structure.

The tower was originally due to be completed by the end of 2011, but some factors including the recent container ports strikes in Hong Kong have affected some of the materials shipment but it is expected to completed by mid year in 2013.

Some of you have asked me how far the 400mm give me, and here you see that from the ground level I can make out the Chinese characters on the construction site on the top floors.

The 400mm with the 7D with an APS-C sensor effectively gives me 400x1.6 = 560mm of zoom factor equivalent on a full frame. You can compare this to the wide angle shot in the previous image [2] shot with the 6D + 17mm — so now I have an effectively 30x optical zoom range using my two cameras, which is precisely why I now carry these two configs daily.

A collage of architectural forms at night in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The only way this is possible is if you are living in a city where you are surrounded by tall buildings.

On the top is an awning of a restaurant, I think (萬寶樓 Main Pole House). To the left is 利榮大樓 Lee Wing Building. Looks like residential but I am not sure. 修頓花園 Southorn Garden is the building at the bottom. This I believe is residential as the name suggests. The 安康商業大廈 On Hong Commercial Building is the office skyscraper on the right.

Pointing upwards with a wide angle lens affords this. Super sweet. The GP-E2 GPS unit allows me to figure out where I was on Google Maps after the fact. For these kinds of photos the centre is obviously not the focus so I would perform vignette removals on them so you can actually see the forms. S+H also needs to be applied so it is tweaked inside Photoshop. I wish that Lightroom would have S+H also.

A city never sleeps. At night, the traffic in Central is much less busy, but in this 5-sec capture, it can be seen that the streets are still quite busy.

This is captured handheld while banking the camera on the pedestrian footbridge. I am thinking of getting a lightweight tabletop tripod for this purpose as it is getting somewhat ridiculous to get on these weird position just to get a photo.

The lens flare shows a star shape. Again, it is not done with filters inside Photoshop. You can do this with your camera by using a small aperture with the lens—which if you wish to do night time long exposure it is somewhat a required element unless you use an ND filter. But ND filter at night is a bit nuts—oh but crazyisgood…

Hong Kong is one of the densest city in the world. In order to discourage private car ownership, cars are subjected to a first-time registration tax, which varies from 35% to over 100% depending on the size and value of the car [1]. Despite this, the number of private car ownership increases every year, and exotic cars abound—and you can get a glimpse of just how wealthy the population is.

Besides MTR (metro in Hong Kong), double deckers are a primary transportation options. I too prefer to ride the bus when time is not of essence. While MTR is faster, you can usually find a seat on the buses—which you never really can on the metro. And there are many express routes which connects downtown to remote areas. For example, there is a bus which goes door-to-door from Central to where I live so I can do my social media undisturbed for the whole trip. So what’s not to love?

Pictured is the rush hour traffic in Central on a rainy day. Here you observe just how busy the traffic is, and hopefully you can then perhaps appreciate the pedestrian footbridges which connect all the buildings together? The building to the left is the Exchange Square. The building on the right is Jardine House. The sign on the road points to the metro stations Hong Kong Station and Central Station respectively.

I found these exotic flowers while walking around at the Royal Botanic Gardens. I have no ideas what they are. Perhaps a botanist can help me out? This place is filled with wonderful flowers. I was meditatively relaxed after spending a quiet afternoon there.

Technically, I was reminded how well the 24-70 double-duty as a macro lens. It doesn’t do it as well as the 100 macro does, but it does it well enough on the get-go, thus making it a great always-on walk-around lens. The only thing I wish mine had an IS. Yes, there is a Mark II out now with the IS, but this baby (Mk 1 or 2) doesn’t come cheap and I can’t say I am able to buy another one any time soon.

The Hong Kong Cultural Centre (Chinese: 香港文化中心) is a multipurpose performance facility in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Hong Kong [1]. The concert hall inside houses an 8,000-pipe organ by Austrian firm Rieger Orgelbau and is the largest in Asia. I have had the pleasure of going to a few Bach Organ Concertos at the concert hall and let’s just say that the organ kicks some serious ass.

I did not use to like this building when it was first built. For some reasons, the architectures for government buildings often feature these very odd shade of pastels which look like toilets to me—mainly because perhaps the public toilets also use the same materials as they are easy to maintain and clean. But at night, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre truly shines—literally.

Since moving back to Hong Kong in 2012, I have been coming here for concerts and drama performances much more frequently than I used to, and in turn allows me to experience this building complex in new ways then before mainly perhaps because I also get to walk around it more often and finding more interesting perspective on this building.

I went back and shot some more photographs of the manmade waterfall downstairs. I did not have a tripod with me so I placed it on the fence and used the new keyring Remote RC6 to release the shutter. It is a small nice gadget.

This one is a four-second capture. I will try and see what I can do with an ND filter any this day now.

Handheld long exposure at night. The cars are moving very fast so all is left behind is the beautiful forms left behind of their headlights.

Here you also see more elongated signage on the road intended for drivers. In Hong Kong, signage on the road is typical, and one can reason that it is a lot safer this way to keep the drivers’ eyes on the road instead of up above.

Summary

Typographic landscape of a city described through visually counting from 1 to 100.

Setup

These were shot with my first digital camera, the Sony Mavica FD7.

Statement

This was my first photography project. It started out as a project for a typography class while I was in college. Like most graphic design assignments at Yale, it was very open ended. We were asked to show the experience of a city through the language of typography. I have always been interested in numbers, and I as such I decided to run around New Haven and photograph numbers which represent the city, from 1 to 100.

The series is to be projected on the wall as slideshow. The numbers are recognizably New Haven, and most who have been in New Haven can recognize the sense of time and space as they go through the series. Some commented that it reminded them of Sesame Street.

It was so successful that I thought of extended this to different neighborhoods in New York, but I never had the time to work on more of them after college, and as such I have only completed the first and only one...

The original series was displayed via a conventional slide projector. In order to best-simulate the original intention on a computer, view the set as a slideshow and set the speed to fast.

I walked by Sai Sha Road on my way home. It was June 23rd, 2013 — the weekend where there was a super moon.

I usually carry two camera bodies + the 17-40 + the 100-400 everywhere I go but the Manfrotto 303SPH and the tripod together added a lot of weight so I did not have it with me. So I could not take a photo of the super moon with the super telephoto. Instead, I took a panorama with the 6D + 17-40 photographing people walking home.

Taiwan reminds me a little bit of Macau, with lots and lots of scooters. In Cantonese, we call scooters 綿羊仔, which literally means “small sheep,” as in they are not as powerful as the standard motorcycles, but rather small in stature.

These scooters run rampant on the narrow alleys of the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市), where merchants were seen using them to shuttle merchandises back and forth the busy street. While a van might seem to be more useful, the streets get so packed that it made sense to use these bikes as motor transports to navigate haphazardly among the crowds.

Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM. Processed in Lightroom 5.

Someone [1] on SML Facebook [2] commented that SML should be careful to not trip from the cables on the desk. While cable management continues to be an issue, the real issue with the current work space is not cable management but work surface availability.

Right now I am using a MUJI dining table [3] fully extended which measures 130cm (4.3 ft) L x 80cm (2.6 ft) D as my working surface. It is barely holding all the input control surfaces which I use. The Wacom is mostly now resting on my arm rest because this is the only way I can do all of my work.

I would rather not have to have all of input surfaces, too, but they all serve a purpose:

+ Apple Wireless Keyboards. I have two (one not shown) because Apple’s bluetooth pairing won’t allow easy machine toggle and I have two Macs running side by side.

+ Apple Wired keyboard. I need this so I can use InDesign keyboard shortcuts for Paragraph and Character styles.

+ Apple Trackpad. Sometimes when I have all these wireless devices running (especially if the Eye-fi is running) the Bluetooth Mouse is very unresponsive and have lags so I use the trackpad.

+ Apple Magic Mouse. I need this because it is the fastest.

+ Novation Remote SL 25. My trusty MIDI input surface. The best velocity-sensitive synth-action keyboards I have played on. Highly recommended.

+ Wacom Intuous Touch 5 Medium. I used to have the Wireless version but Mac does not pair with it very well, which is very annoying. So I upgraded to the Intuous Touch 5 which supports multi-touch and comes with a wire.

Aside from Photoshop work and sometimes Illustrator work for drawing type, I also use the Wacom for writing Chinese characters. Apple’s native handwriting recognition would only do it with the Trackpad. The Inking app does not support Chinese. So I use VisionObjects’ MyScript Stylus [4] which supports multiple international languages including all the the CJK languages, latin languages as well as Arabic. It is the best handwriting app available on the OSX that I have tried. Recommended.

So you see, what I really need is a larger desk and a larger space. Which for now I cannot really afford because Hong Kong properties are ridiculously high now. And I am in no hurry to go enslave myself under some gigantic agencies any time soon.

Our eyes are used to seeing what we see daily. What is different makes it interesting. Thus the view upis always more interesting than what is down below. So point your camera everywhere, even if there does not seem like there is anything to photograph. This fact is especially apparent when you use a wide angle lens.

Form follows function is the reason why I enjoy photographing bridges. They are always built for utility, but are always so interesting.

This is the understructure of a bridge for the MTR (Hong Kong’s metro) near the Ma On Shan station in Hong Kong. It is filled with pipes—large and small.

Lines in space. Not a single bit of ornament, but every bit beautiful.
