Dark substance on Riverwalk

Now classed as a 'museum ship' and owned by The Solent Steam Ship Trust, the SS Shieldhall is seen undertaking a pleasure cruise around Southampton Docks on 11th August 2019. She was built at the Lobnitz Yard in Renfrew for Glasgow City Council, and launched in October 1955. It was known as a 'Sludge Ship', built to transport treated Glasgow sewage to a point beyond the Isle of Arran, where it was dumped into the ocean. After performing this role for 21 years she was sold on to the Southern Water Company, although the nature of her role with them is not known. Finally, in 1985 she was retired, but thankfully preserved and can be found trundling around the Solent and beyond. Copyright Photograph John Whitehouse - all rights reserved

Though there was a date with the negative no information on the location was given. 941630 is branded with the name Red Bank which John Law has helpfully suggested refers to the part of the yards around the Decoy area, south of Doncaster. These tenders, once full, would be tripped to Ranskill, where there was sludge pit.

It's been quite a while since I posted anything new from the microbial world. So here goes. Over the weekend I was doing some wastewater consulting work in which I had to examine the bacterial biosolids (aka sludge) under my microscope. Millions of aggregated bacterial cells are present in these microscopic particles.

As an aside, I decided to play with the camera and microscope settings I had at my disposal to achieve images with maximal resolution and DOF. Normally at the magnifications used to see bacteria, DOF become extremely thin, making it very difficult to be much of the subject matter into focus. This particular material was a good subject to explore focus stacking on.

The image was taken at x40 magnification under dark field illumination.

Alongside at her berth, the former Glasgow and Southampton sludge carrier turned into a local excursion ship. I'll be aboard for a short cruise on Saturday.

This is a Drain Pan full of liquid sludge and an undetermined type of vegetative growth on the inside of an air conditioning unit.

The cooled, dehumidified air that comes out of the supply air grills passes over the drain pan. Odor

and bacteria can be picked up by the passing air over the entire surface of the drain pan, and distributed throughout the covered zone.

The sludge and mold would also eventually, clog up the drain outlet causing the drain pan to overflow

onto the roof, or saturate the ductwork inside the building. This could cause water leaks, property damage, the need for repairs to the drywall, paint and trim, and ongoing mold issues. Finally, leaving a drain pan in this condition would ensure that the drain

pan would rust out well before its time.

One of the few decent shots I got on that outing. The light and sky were just so dull and overcast.

Honestly, I think I might have wasted that awesome "flock of seagulls" joke a few pictures back. I am officially taking it back for a photo taken on a day with better lighting. You all owe me a laugh. Or disappointed groan... whatever the case may be.

Toxic sludge scandal in Calcinato (BS) ITALY

A company in Calcinato was spreading untreated toxic sludge in the Po Valley (over 150,000 tons in the last 10 years).

The fields so "fertilized" were cultivated with maize.

From the interceptions of the investigators, the managers of the incriminated company, amused, imagined how good the corn grown on the toxic sludge would have been when eaten by children.
