My Years at King Charles (11-18).
Slasher Richards and Jim Charlton (pictured here) were good friends. And I hope you can see in their eyes what a couple of playful rogues they were. Jim was one of several Yorkshiremen, presumably recruited by Johnny from schools he'd known up there.
When Mr Richards was in the middle of teaching us Economics, suppressed giggles would gradually spread through the class as more and more of us spotted Mr Charlton standing outside the classroom with his face nearly pressed against the glass in the door, staring in. As soon as Slasher saw him, he was gone.
When Jim was in full flow teaching us English, the door would suddenly swing open and in would rush Slasher, his gown flying behind him. 'This is a load of rubbish!' he would exclaim in his gorgeous Richard Burton tones, and then rush out again. You never knew what to expect from either of them. Jim would turn round from the blackboard and have a stick of chalk in his ear. He was brilliant at keeping a straight face and we knew he was challenging us not to laugh, but of course we didn't have his self-discipline.
They were my house-masters (Kings - red of course) and it won't surprise you to learn that we rarely won inter-house sports events but had loads of fun!
