Being skilled will only take you so far. I put a lot more stock in Being Lucky.

Bianca was a great subject, energetic, easy-going, but that light...I couldn't create that, that had to come on its own.

We drove around the neighborhood, looking for it, the nearby mountains meant we lost sunlight earlier than official Sunset, but all that searching would've been useless if we hadn't lucked down the right streets.

Hell, I got lucky with Bianca being so much fun, she could've easily been a dud.

Sure, I saw the way the light was playing in my front yard, knew I could get this edge light and this wild light effect. Sure I know how to photograph black skin (folks talk about it like it's hard?), know how to talk to my subjects to get what I want.

But, and film aficionados know this intimately, there's so much we can't plan for, that we have to leave up to chance. Older I get more I realize how little I control.

“A.I. - About Apple’s Identity”

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

---

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.

Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.

Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.

With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.

This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.

The true creator was Jonathan Ive.

A minority of people may share this perspective with me.

However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.

The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.

Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.

It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.

I have always loved music.

Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.

It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.

And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.

(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)

Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.

It was those artists who moved me to my core.

The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.

Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.

In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.

Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.

Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

I have written at length, but here is the key article:

**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**

🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)

At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.

While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.

Apple refused to bow to Trump.

If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:

**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**

Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.

A company that does not pander to Trump—

That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.

On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.

Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.

If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.

The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.

My wife is showing us the hotel room.

But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.

When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

Please take a look if you'd like.

This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.

I'll post the link below.

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.

From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".

The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.

That is the number when it was put up for auction.

No sign was written on the work.

So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.

However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.

A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.

I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

### **Synopsis**

Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.

Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.

To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.

During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:

*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*

Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

---

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

タイトル

“” A.I. アップルのアイデンティティについて””

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

In Pakistan SCHOOL LIFE EXPECTANCY is just 7 years which means out of total 49.9% literate ppl major chunk goes to school for just 7 years n those schools are Government Institutions where there is no pre-school - they start off in Grade - 1 and we knw how much they can learn in seven years in such schools

The first class, all stainless Grand Canyon Flyer eases into Williams after having spent the day at the Grand Canyon NP. With an Alco FB unit assisting, the sounds of the units was just as good as the skilled playing of the K5LA the Engineer was doing for the crossing.

The mugger crocodile is a skilled predator that preys on a variety of species. Like other crocodilians they are ambush hunters and wait for their prey to come close. They wait camouflaged in the murky waters to launch the attack in the suitable moment. They mostly prey on fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Reproduction takes place in winter months. Females lay eggs in nests that are holes dug in the sand. Temperature during incubation is the determinant of sex in the young. The mugger crocodile possesses the size to be a serious threat to humans, but they are not as aggressive as some other species, such as the sympatric saltwater crocodiles. They are also observed to usually avoid areas with saltwater crocodiles. Muggers are fairly social species and tolerate their conspecifics during basking and feeding.

I read somewhere that illiterate people are often very skilled at hiding their condition. They devise all kinds of complex schemes to create the impression that they can, indeed, read and... in that way, develop their own particular kind of knowledge.

That always stayed with me because it reminds me of how I learn. Obviously I'm not illterate, but I do have a lot of trouble learning certain basic things. Technical things, for example. They completely overwhelm me. But... because I have certain needs related to technology... I tend to devise my own rather cumbersome and time-consuming workarounds.

That's how it's been with photo editing. Let the record show that, although Husband Mike did graciously buy me PhotoShop about six months ago, I've never even tried to use it. I opened it once and was so completely hornswoggled... gaaaah!... that I pretty much ran for the hills. And instead of taking time to learn it properly, I just reverted to doing what I could with the fairly basic software that came with my camera.

Layers. Oh, man. I tried so long and hard with layers. Over the weekend, it finally clicked and I figured out... not how to do it the "right" way... but how to get it to do what I want... in my own backwards, sideways way.

I'm not sure this is a good thing. I mean... if I learned it "properly," I'd be in a better position to learn more... to build skills, etc. And maybe I should aspire to that. But I can't handle organized learning.

I don't WANT to learn all the basics, starting from square one. I just want to learn how to do the one or two things that interest me. And... honestly. It's much more rewarding to blunder through it on my own than to have someone teach me.

The fundamental irony here is that I'm lazy... and, as a result of that, I end up working harder for every little thing than I should have to.

Funny how that works, eh?

And here's how it all relates to the photo.

I spent goodness-knows-how-many minutes shooting this tree in the sunset the other night. I had a particular image in my mind, and was full-on determined to capture it. I kept wanting more... bigger... more tree... more sunset... and... amid all that, I missed the fact that the real worthy image was here, in this relatively tiny frame. Just a few branches with the city in the distance... rather than the grandiose thing I was shooting for. This is kind of pixelly because it's a crop from one of the larger (and soooo unusccessful) shots I took the other night. And (ahem) it really shows up the negative side of my laziness.

If I had ever taken the time to learn photography properly; if I exercised the kind of patience and discipline used by good photographers... I would've SEEN this while I was out. But I was so intent (as usual) on just getting what I wanted... that I didn't realize that what I wanted was crap!

Um... is there a moral to this? Maybe. I can't think of one. But... in amid my joy at "figuring out" layers... this is a great reality check... a reminder that the slap dash approach can sometimes get you by, but it's no reliable substitute for actual learning.

Sentinel

Royal guardsman armoured in ceremonial gear their heavy shields and Long Halberds make them slow but enduring fighters.

Half Ogre Ramhead

Unlike their larger dumber ogryn cousins, the Half ogre shows a fair amount of cunning and can remember even detailed tactical orders. their strength and size see them fight in the Vanguard.

BannerMan

Only the bravest and strongest fighters are offered the chance to carry the heraldry of the Falcon legion. Heavily armoured the Bannerman will fight til his last breath to keep the colours safe at the very front of the Vanguard.

Row 2

Deathshead Archer

Not averse to using poison to incapacitate their enemies even a knick from one arrow can be fatal! Deployed as scouts these eagle eyed infantry are a boon to the falcon legion.

Chaplain

The Wisest head in the Falcons army, with tales of battles long forgotten by most, the Chaplain can offer insight across many battlefields. His mace is also used to administer the last rites to those who won't make it back to the field hospital.

Headsman

The Executioner keeps the troops in check acting as unofficial enforcer for the falcons upper echelons. He can take a head with a single deft strike, or if he is told otherwise can make it messy and drawn out...

Quarter Master

This grizzled veteran keeps the army equipped and moving. With enough time, he can acquire you anything from a powdered unicorn horn to 10 minutes you won't forget with a saucy wench. Rum is his favourite currency!

Row 3

Bladed Fury

A lethal combination of enthusiasm and martial prowess beware the whirling web of death! trained from infancy these unpredictable weapon masters are a real wildcard in the Falcons pack.

Bucaneer

These flamboyant characters are expert florentine fighters who love the cut and thrust of combat. Often the buccaneer is a successful retired pirate who has made his fortune and is looking to transition into the nobility by proving his worth on the battlefield.

Herald

These artisans can be found across the battlefields although most consider them blowhards they are not averse to sticking the knife in when an opponent is not looking.

Bottom Row

Lester the Jester

his repertoire is mainly limited to fart jokes but his sense of humour is generally as cruel as the knife he wields in combat.

The Duchess

Plucked from the Mountain tribes the duchess is Lady to Erasmus the black, an expert with blades and poisons, not just a pretty face. Many a man has underestimated her and paid the ultimate price.

Paladin Duke Erasmus the Black

The present Falcons Master General. He is a fearsome soldier and expert fighter - he fights without mercy! heavily armoured his sword carries a blessed purity seal which deals extra damage to chaotic or evil creatures.

Brody the Squire

He carries his spare weapons and maintains the Dukes armour and equipment. Although not a proficient swordsman he is lethal with "Old Faithful" which is Erasmus trusty Mace.

A very skilled mouse, stealing food from the "airforce" - and we do have woodpeckers and jays in our garden sometimes.

All this action and hard work and there's not one "hair" (feather) out of place on him. you should've seen me !!!! (((;

i was watching this clever white crane fishing. he let me get pretty close while intensely scanning the waves for bringing in the tiny fish .... then catching them before they would hit the wall.

The Nuva archer is a skilled warrior and technological wonder. The concept was brought about by General Taka's imagination and executed by the hands of the most skilled matoran. This archer differs from traditional archer units in that he does not need to carry his ammunition on his body during battle. His "arrows" or bolts are stored, generated, and replinished within his technologically advanced left arm which coordinates with the "crossbow" or bolt thrower that he wields. The bolt thrower is one of a kind and is viewed as a breakthrough in modern weaponry. Though quite bulky, the bolt thrower allows the archer to fire single highly charged energy bolts, which have the power to penetrate light/medium armor, at a rate of 1.5 seconds. After firing 10 bolts the archer's arm requires a cool down period which lasts approximately 8 to 10 seconds. Once completed, the archer may continue raining destruction down upon the enemy. The archer's built-in optical system allows the archer to target enemy's from a greater distance than the typical archer. The Nuva archer's advanced weaponry and overal engineering give the Nuva army a great advantage on the battlefied when facing overwhelming numbers.

I hope you guys enjoy this one! Building him really inspired me to go back and revamp General Taka and the Nuva Infantry, so stay tuned for those guys in the future! Thanks for all of your support this past year! Looking forward to the next year!

Detail of a gondola

The gondola is propelled by a person (the gondolier) who stands facing the bow and rows with a forward stroke and is usually very skilled, followed by a compensating backward stroke. Contrary to popular belief, the gondola is never poled like a punt as the waters of Venice are too deep. Until the early 20th century, as many photographs attest, gondolas were often fitted with a "felze", a small cabin, to protect the passengers from the weather or from onlookers. Its windows could be closed with louvered shutters—the original "venetian blinds". After the elimination of the traditional felze—possibly in response to tourists complaining that it blocked the view—there survived for some decades a kind of vestigial summer awning, known as the "tendalin" (these can be seen on gondolas as late as the mid-1950s, in the film Summertime). While in previous centuries gondolas could be many different colors, a sumptuary law of Venice required that gondolas should be painted black, and they are customarily so painted now.

It is estimated that there were eight to ten thousand gondolas during the 17th and 18th century. There are just over four hundred in active service today, virtually all of them used for hire by tourists. Those few that are in private ownership are either hired out to Venetians for weddings or used for racing. Even though the Gondola by now has become a widely publicized icon of Venice, in the times of the Republic of Venice it was by far not the only means of transportation: on the map of Venice created by Jacopo de' Barbari in 1500 only a fraction of the boats are gondolas, the majority of boats are batellas, caorlinas, galleys and other boats - by now only a handful of batellas survive, and caorlinas are used for racing only.

Every detail of the gondola has its own symbolism. The iron prow-head of the gondola, called "fero da prorà” or “dol fin“, is needed to balance the weight of the gondolier at the stern and has an “S” shape symbolic of the twists in the Canal Grande. Under the main blade there is a kind of comb with six teeth or prongs (“rebbi “) standing for the six “sestieri” of Venice. A kind of tooth juts out backwards toward the centre of the gondola symbolises the island of Giudecca. The curved top signifies the Doge’s cap. The semi-circular break between the curved top and the six teeth is said to represent the Rialto Bridge. Sometimes three friezes can be seen in-between the six prongs, indicating the three main islands of the city: Murano, Burano and Torcello. The oar or rèmo is held in an oar lock known as a fórcola. The forcola is of a complicated shape, allowing several positions of the oar for slow forward rowing, powerful forward rowing, turning, slowing down, rowing backwards, and stopping. The ornament on the front of the boat is called the fèrro (meaning iron) and can be made from brass, stainless steel, or aluminium. It serves as decoration and as counterweight for the gondolier standing near the stThe profession of gondolier is controlled by a guild, which issues a limited number of licenses (425) granted after periods of training and apprenticeship, and a major comprehensive exam which tests knowledge of Venetian history and landmarks, foreign language skills, and practical skills in handling the gondola typically necessary in the tight spaces of Venetian canals.Gondolas are handmade using 8 different types of wood (fir, oak, cherry, walnut, elm, mahogany, larch and lime) and are composed of 280 pieces. The oars are made of beech wood. The port side of the gondola is made longer than the starboard side. This asymmetry causes the gondola to resist the tendency to turn towards the left at the forward stroke. It is a common misconception that the gondola is a paddled vessel when the correct term is rowed, as in "I rowed my gondola to work."

The gondola is also one of the vessels typically used in both ceremonial and competitive regattas, rowing races held amongst gondoliers using the technique of Voga alla Veneta.

The origin of the word "gondola" has never been satisfactorily established, despite many theories.

In August 2010, Giorgia Boscolo became Venice's first female gondolier.

It is seen as a romantic activity for couples to take a ride through the Venetian canals together. The gondolas are so often used and misused by love struck pairs, that the Venetian police sometimes assigns extra officers to the areas surrounding the canals to keep everything in check.

Westbound CP ballast on the Waterloo branch.

One of the themes that interest me in recent years is: 'street games', and 'rope jumping' as an example.

Unfortunately, who plays in the street in this 'screen era'?

So, I have to search for photos mainly at the Ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods of Jerusalem (where screens are forbidden, from religious reasons), and at the Arab neighborhoods, where kids, still, play on the street, sometimes.

But, up until now, I didn't get a satisfying photo of children jumping the rope. Recently, as part of the 'festival' of the demonstrations against Netanyahu and his government in Israel, I found these youngsters that part of their fun in the demonstrations, also, jumped the rope (and seem not very skilled, it should be admitted).

Bottom line: as a street photographer, you never know what you would find, where and when, you should just give luck the chance…

Kazakh eagle hunters (Mongolia).

Kazakh eagle hunters are a group of skilled hunters from the Kazakh ethnic group, primarily found in the western regions of Mongolia.

The practice of eagle hunting is a central part of their cultural heritage and identity, passed down through generations among the Kazakh people for centuries.

Eagle hunters typically capture and train female golden eagles because they are larger and more aggressive than their male counterparts.

The training is a meticulous and time-consuming process used by hanters to establish a strong bond with their eagles.

To hunt, the hunter typically releases the eagle from a high point. The eagle circles in the sky, scanning for potential prey.

When a suitable target is spotted, the hunter gives a command, and the eagle swoops down to capture it.

The hunting season for Kazakh eagle hunters typically takes place during the colder months of the year, from late autumn to early winter.

Eagle hunters wear traditional clothing, including fur-lined coats and hats, to protect themselves from the harsh winter conditions.

A special leather gauntlets is used to protect their arms when handling the eagles.

Eagle hunting is not only a practical skill but also holds immense cultural significance for the Kazakh people.

It is often celebrated through festivals and competitions, such as the Golden Eagle Festival, where eagle hunters showcase their skills and the bonds they have with their eagles.

This is a side entrance to the once regal Masonic Temple in Aurora, Illinois. Built in 1922, it is now in a sorrowful state. The Masons sold the temple in the mid 1980s and it has been closed since 2006. Because of code violations and possible danger from falling concrete, a chain link fence encloses the building. This image is a composite of 3 photos. I have added the cornerstone with the date and some decorative details from the front door to this crumbling side entrance.

Happy Fence Friday, everyone!

What a skilled hunter my Grey Heron friend from Ames Park is! In a split second, it captured this good sized fish and carried it to the shore where it began making a meal of it.

I often see these birds hunting, but seldom manage to capture them with their meals, because most will be pretty small, and the birds manage to wolf them down very quickly.

I also captured a Great Egret doing the same thing, which is even more unusual, since twice in one day is a rarity indeed!

I decided to rework these Silver Fox pics tonight as I have noticed my tendencies to brighten images up, often too much. These were taken in dark morning twilight, at ISO 51,200 (my camera's max), but instead of trying to make them look like daylight pics, I thought to try to darken them to look more like the night shots they are.

In my quest to become more comfortable and skilled at dark images, I want to open up comments to helpful tips and criticisms. Some of these are stacks (which amazes me that I could get 5 or more images close enough to identical with a subject like this TO stack), and there are interesting things playing with the lighting on some surrounding vegetation.

When my wife and I visit the area, we usually take some time to watch and photograph the surfers who frequent the area. I am always amazed that I can get photos like this with a 70-200 mm lens.

" Well, I was not supposed to keep a log of the actions of my squad, but I have to do it now. So let's start with the importants points :

My sergeant, CT-1756-24, died a few hours ago. I took control of my squad, which is actually counting 1 and a half men. CT-2012, named "Blast", and CT-2453, who got broke his 2 legs. He's now waiting for us near a crashed Starfighter we found. So the introductions are done, let's start the story.

Geonosis, my first battle. I have been waiting for this moment for a long time. But no action for the moment. My squad and I was send to a canyon where some Jedis are trapped because their ships crashed. The LAAT/i dropped us near the canyon. After a short walk, we arrived to the canyon. I was able to see a part of a Starship, stuck into the ground. Our Sergeant ordered us the start the descent with our grapples. But one of the troopers didn't attached his grapple very well, and fell. The Sarge tried to catch him, but he fell with him. Blast and CT-2453 were numb, so I said to them :

/CT-1024-53, Me/ " All right, let's descend. Even if the Sarge is dead, we have a task ."

/CT-2453/ "He's maybe not dead !"

/CT-1024-53, Me/ " Really? Yeah, that's possible. Maybe he just realized that he was able to control the Force and stopped his fall."

/CT-2453/ " What ? But that's not possible!"

/CT-1024-53, Me/ " Really? I thought so too. Now let's continue the descent"

Halfway, CT-2453's grapple just broke and he fell.

/CT-1024-53, Me/ " Dang it, who made these grapples ! "

/CT-2012, Blast/ " I don't know, but I'm not liking it. I just hope that your grapple will break before mine "

/CT-1024-53, Me/ "Yeah sure. Enough with the jokes, I just want to feel some ground under my feet"

We safely made it to the ground. The bodies of the trooper and the Sergeants were laying on the floor, bones shattered. CT-2453 was near them , yelling in pain, his legs almost ripped of.

/CT-1024-53, Me/ " Blast, try to do something for him. I will check the ship"

/CT-2012, Blast/ " Okay, Titus.

So I started inspecting the ship. It was not very badly damaged. The pilot was certainly skilled, because he survived the crash, seeing as his seat was empty. I didn't see any blood marks. But then I heard some noise. Droids were coming ! So I kneeled, aimed my blaster, and called for Blast.

/CT-1024-53, Me/ " Blast, get your ass over here. Droids are coming !!"

I'm not sure that newly posted photos are showing up this morning. Very few new images from My Contacts.

Just noticed that before I took my computer in yesterday to get Windows 10 installed, I had 149 GB of free space left. Now, after the transfer, I have 216 GB of free space! Is this a worrying sign??

Update: 20 November 2019. I now have Windows 10 installed on my computer, thank goodness. The very first thing I wanted to check was Flickr, hoping that I would not be unable to open it. I had to log in, which makes me nervous on the rare occasion that I find I have been logged out somehow, as I know so many people end up not being able to access their Flickr photostream. SO relieved when it all opened just fine. Last night, I installed various programs, reactivated others (with Chat help on some websites). I discovered that two very important things are missing, though. A whole section of emails was lost. Before the transfer to Windows 10, the words at the side were Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk and Deleted. Then, below those, the other (lost) section had things like Saved Sent and Saved received. Contained many years worth of plant lists and locations from bioblitz, outings, natural areas and other things. The other thing that I don't think I will be able to get back is Google Earth and the few hundred locations I had carefully marked on it for years. All the acreages we have visited for years, and so much more. Sigh.

What a day to have to go out yesterday! Another snowstorm, with something like 9" or 10" of heavy wet snow to clear off my car. Coming back home, especially, the visibility was not the greatest in the late afternoon. Felt so happy to finally get home. This morning, my car is covered in more snow again.

Like I have been doing recently, I have posted five more photos from my archives this morning. I still have masses of backing up and deleting to do. While doing this, I have been setting aside a few images to add to Flickr. I will add, below, the description that I wrote under another photo taken on the same day.

"Though the long tradition of “snipe hunt” pranks at summer camp has convinced many people otherwise, Wilson’s Snipes aren’t made-up creatures. These plump, long-billed birds are among the most widespread shorebirds in North America. They can be tough to see thanks to their cryptic brown and buff coloration and secretive nature. But in summer they often stand on fence posts or take to the sky with a fast, zigzagging flight and an unusual “winnowing” sound made with the tail." From AllAboutBirds.

www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Wilsons_Snipe/id

According to Fisher and Acorn's book, "Birds of Alberta", "the common Snipe is both secretive and well camouflaged, so few people notice it until it flushes suddenly from a nearby grassy tussock. As soon as the Snipe takes to the air, it performs a series of quick zigzags - an evasive maneuver designed to confuse predators. Because of this habit, Snipes were among the most difficult birds to shoot (in the days when shorebirds were hunted for sport), and skilled sportsmen were known as "snipers" - a term later adopted by the military."

"It was the annual May Species Count on the weekend of 28 and 29 May 2016. My group's Saturday Count was down in Fish Creek Provincial Park at Votier's Flats and Shaw's Meadow. On the Sunday, our usual small group (six of us in two cars) covered an area SW of the city - which happens to be one of my favourite and most visited areas. We had a great day, stopping at a few wetlands and calling in at Barb Castell's acreage where she usually has amazing birds to show us. Several special species were missing, but we were delighted to watch a teeny Ruby-throated Hummingbird. We stopped at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park and ate our picnic lunches and then did a short walk to look for Calypso Orchids. I took too long to try and get a sharp photo of a group of fungi that I missed the orchids, but that was OK, as I have seen them a few times before.

After the Count came to an end, I drove a few of the back roads again, taking a few more shots of the Wilson's Snipe, including this one that was standing with one leg tucked up inside its feathers..

"The count goes May 28-29: Calgary birders have been out in force every May since 1979, contributing to a broad census of the constantly changing patterns of bird distributions in North America. Last year (2015) we found 212 species. The count circle is the same as previous years, extending from Olds to Nanton, and from Exshaw to Standard, and includes a variety of environments." From NatureCalgary.

"May species count, Terr. #22, Priddis Area: Plummers Rd, from Hwy 22 to #762, SW of Calgary, 0730-1530, Sun. 29May2016. 58 km. Mostly sunny, becoming overcast at noon, S wind, becoming gusty, 10 -20 kph. 13-18°C."

Taken at Tim's place in SW, Ohio. Tim is a meticulous, skilled craftsman who is currently restoring an old Diamond T and has done other Diamond T's before. Unfortunately, I've seen several in the "before" or partially completed condition, but he's sold them before I saw the completed versions. He has also sold other old trucks I took pictures of and had hoped he'd restore but, he never working on them. He acquired this one from a relative and because it has been in the family and is so rare, I think he may keep it awhile.

Schacht cars and trucks were made in Cincinnati. Although I've lived almost all of my life in Cincinnati, I've never heard of them and don't know where their factory was located. (update:

Thanks to Steve who told me where the factory was and that it is still there - I'll try to check it out) I know a couple of local people who just might have one. I'll have to check with them if and when I get a chance. He'll probably have to fabricate many parts as I doubt he'll be able to find replacements. I love the curve at the top of the door window. This is one cool antique truck.

From Wikipedia:

"Schacht was an American manufacturer of automobile, trucks and fire trucks from 1904 to 1940. The company was started by William and Gustav Schact in Cincinnati, Ohio. Production of automobiles was from 1904 to 1914 with over 8,000 automobiles produced. The company was renamed the G.A. Schacht Motor Truck Company and production of trucks and fire trucks continued until 1940."

A Canon technician works on a camera at Consumer Electronics Show. Canon provided free clean and check service at CES. I dropped my 5D Mark III off and two hours later picked it up all shiny. Two technicians did the work in a glass booth. Here he is cleaning the mirror. He is using a sticky plunger kind of thing on the mirror and lighting it with a ring light with a lens in the center. After this maneuver, he looked through the ring to check his work. Really fascinating and very nice of Canon.

As I walked past the shop in London’s Whitechapel I asked the gentleman If I could take his picture. He agreed and smiled then got on with his work oblivious of my presence. A perfect street subject. The shop also did dry cleaning of clothes so offered a really good service.

A few months ago a fire went through one of my favorite spots in my home town and destroyed around 40 homes. It saddened me to see all the destruction. Last fall my family and I took some family portraits down this beautiful tree lined road that is golden in fall and luckily only a portion of the trees were burned. But this was part of the section that was not so lucky. It's sad to see something that took so many years to grow gone so fast.

I will post some of the family pictures I took over here on my instagram: instagram.com/mortalyssa/

Most Vikings were farmers. They grew crops such as barley, oats and rye and kept cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and horses. In most parts of Scandinavia, people lived in timber houses.

The Expat Explore guided tour that I chose had lots of free time, lots of optional tours, lots of walking (3 hours) every day, and included group dinners on 4 days, while the remaining 10 days we were free to choose our favorite restaurants at our own expense. Everyone enjoyed so much this journey, my daughter and I left from this group at Rome but some of them continue to travel for 28 days with same guide and driver

Only the most highly skilled Chacoans shaped and set stone; others carried supplies and mixed mortar. The width of a given wall was determined by its place in a structure. The first story of a two-story wall is always wider than the second. Chacoan walls are often called core-and-veneer, but only the widest walls had cores. The Chacoan tried to build walls with two flush faces, but because the stones were typically quite small, to build a wider wall they built up a space between the two faces; this spacing is often called the core. In most walls, the core consisted of roughly shaped stone or rubble laid at the same time as the two faces. In others, the faces were built up independently, and the core packed between them. Chacoan walls derive their stability from the degree of contact between stones in the faces and the width of the wall itself, not from the strength of the core.

Chacoan wall faces are typically called "veneers", but they were integral load-bearing elements rather than decorative overlays. The veneers are known for their attention to coursing and detail, and various styles have become synonymous with Chacoan building. Depending on the facing style, the joints between the stones would be filled with spalls or chinks, set in mud mortar; or the coursing could alternate between larger stones and several courses of smaller tablets. Good veneer minimized the amount of exposed mortar, which reduced maintenance, maximized stone contact, and increased the strength of the wall. It also reduced the possibility of structural failure. Aside from structural considerations, some veneers are the result of highly skilled masons working within well-developed craft traditions. Recurring veneer patterns may indicate a widespread style used during a particular period, or they may suggest the work of a specific social group or line of builders.

Doors and vents often had sills of carefully ground flat stone slabs and lintels constructed from a row of thin wood beams. Chacoan masons also frequently included intramural beams – horizontal logs completely enclosed in the wall core – which were probably intended to reduce horizontal deformation of the wall. The interior walls of great houses were typically covered in a rock veneer. Judd identified four distinct types, and his typology is the most commonly accepted in the region. Chetro Ketl's interior walls, particularly those in the eastern wing, were covered in a Type IV veneer characterized by uniform pieces of sandstone with little to no exposed mortar. Judd excluded a fifth type of masonry, called McElmo style, from his typology.

After my visit to Lisbon and touring about using a segway.I am hooked. I booked a tour of Bergen befor I left on my cruise. Our guide (Italian) was full on=f knowledge and took the party to see some of the oldest parts of the city. up and down alleys and roads up hills and waterfronts. I think there is no better way to see a city.

The original of this picture in Midjourney, by the staggeringly skilled Rachel Price, is far, far better than anything I could ever dream of producing, but they so kindly gave me permission to put a small tweak on it... in this one, just the faces, the dresses remain untouched, but my followers will know i do love a flowery pattern! ( I have other tinkering in mind!)

It is a picture I shall always keep, thank you, Rachel, I hope it makes you happy, too!

Kylo Ren has been informed about the existence of a supremely skilled mercenary who is targeting several First Order personalities. He is known as Deathstroke and Kylo has had enough of that “universes coming together” thing! He really hates crossovers.

Without hesitation he ordered the Stormtroopers under his command to find this Deathstroke and make sure the stroke part is removed from his name. He wants this mercenary dead for good. Kylo is furious, but he always is, it so this has probably nothing to do with Deathstroke.

“Find this clown Deathstroke and bring me his silly headpiece!” He commands his troopers.

“Hey, boss- says one of the Stormtroopers- why do you call every of these guys a clown?”

“Because whoever does not fall the First Order dress code is a clown!” Replies Kylo.

“Why can’t we make this guy a friend? He seems a badass” Comments an officer.

“Why?! Because I’m the *beep* Kylo Ren! Grandson of Darth Vader, Master of the Knights or Ren, slayer of the most annoying being in the Galaxy!”

“I want him dead! I want him dead now! What do you think Vader would do with this mercenary?”

The question is obviously a rhetoric one but the officer replies.

“Well, maybe he would hire him?”

“You *beep*! How dare you! Telling me, the *beep* Kylo Ren, Grandson of Vader what Vader would do! Help me, Vader! Vaadeeer!”

Kylo ignites his lightsaber and starts smashing things around. Luckily a Stormtrooper finds a Darth Vader plush calming down Kylo before he destroys the new base. It is rumored Kylo’s tantrums destroyed more First Order bases than the Resistance attacks.

After the mandatory Kylo’s tantrum the Stormtroopers are ready to begin their mission. They “easily” track Deathstroke down on a remote Outer Rim planet but it turns out it was part of Slade’s plan. Deathstroke’s strategy is too advanced for Kylo to understand.

The encounter is not going to end well for the First Order Stormtroopers and today exploit will make Slade very popular on this planet bullied too many times by the oppressive presence of Kylo’s servants.
